Show less

This, however, hasn’t always been the case. Due to sea-level changes as a result of climatic changes and the cyclical repetition of glacials and interglacials the North Sea Basin has repeatedly been exposed to the open-air during the Pleistocene. Numerous finds, recovered by fishermen and dredgers while executing their work, indicate that this glacial plane was inhabited by a wide variety of animal species. It is beginning to become clear, due to the recovery of worked flint material, that early human must have been part of the inhabitants. The importance of the North Sea Basin for archaeological research has repeatedly been stressed. The archaeology in the seabed is threatened by several activities that affect the North Sea bottom. The trawling of fish boats, the construction of oil rigs and offshore windmill parks and the marine aggregate industry all have a huge effect on the seabed, possibly destroying archaeological remains while executed. The actual implementation of archaeological fieldwork as part of these bottom stirring activities is minimal and mainly focused on maritime archaeology. The goal of this thesis is to explore the possibilities for palaeolithic research in the North Sea Basin. It does so by analyzing archaeological research on-land and it’s possibilities for offshore archaeology and by evaluating different projects that have been set up over the last year to improve Paleolithic archaeological research on the North Sea bed over the border. In this way the strengths and weaknesses of the research as it is executed this days can be reviewed. The outcome should lead to new insights and a best-practice for setting up a solid archaeological research strategy before the execution of bottom disturbing activities. Crucial to this research strategy is a multidisciplinary approach in which the potential of all executed steps is explored. Recent research methods can be improved by changing the current focus on the object to a focus on the context of archaeological remains. Paleolithic material is useless without knowledge about the landscape and environment in which it has been used and deposited.Show less

They were a powerful entity that was North of the Han empire. The written sources from the Han dynasty show us that the Xiongnu tribe was hierarchically ordered, with the chanyu at the top. The status of the chanyu was hereditary. This made the Xiongnu empire the first and most stable steppe empire that has ever existed. In the graveyards from the Xiongnu there are tombs of several sizes and types. I’ve investigated these differences through by focussing on square tomb and one circular tomb in four case studies with a model to get insight into the spaces were grave goods and animal sacrifices are deposited. In these case studies I explored the similarities and differences between these tombs, that vary in their size. By comparing these tombs I hoped to get insight in the mortuary ritual. I’ve compared the tombs through their size, artefact assemblage and offers that are placed in spaces in the tomb. To get an answer to the assumption that tomb size is a indication for the status of the buried person and if there are other markers that can point to a higher status in society. In the historical sources there are several accounts that a carriage and loads of other items were given to the chanyu and his family by the Han emperor. This indicates that tombs with carriages inside might be attributed to the highest members of society. The results of this study show that the largest tombs have some features that are absent in smaller tombs. These features are a carriage from the Han and animal sacrifices that are placed in a different place than the other tombs. The larger tombs also seem to have more animal sacrifices compared to the smaller ones. Therefore there are more indications for a high status than just the size of the tomb.Show less

Show less

Secondary burials were found at Bouqras, Tell el-Kerkh, Hakemi Use, Yarim Tepe I and II, Tell Hassuna, Halula, Tell es-Sawwan and Arpachiyah. At Tell Sabi Abyad three secondary deposits and nine potential secondary deposits were found. The secondary burials represent only a small portion of the total number of burials that are found. Secondary burials are an exception. Different types of secondary burials from the late Neolithic are found in northern Mesopotamia and at Tell Sabi Abyad. Skulls seem to play an important role. The skulls were removed from graves and reburied. There are also primary and secondary deposits found on floors in buildings. At Tell Sabi Abyad bones of humans and animals are found together in a tholos. At different sites deposits of human and animal bones are found, sometimes together with fragments. These are possibly waste deposits. The secondary burials found at Tell el-Kerkh and Tell es-Sawwan do not seem to correspond with the secondary burials at the other sites. At Tell el-Kerkh pits with many disarticulated human bones are found, these were not found on other sites that were examined. At Tell es-Sawwan red ochre and grave goods were found in secondary burials. At the other sites, no red ochre was found in the secondary burials. Grave goods are rare in the secondary burials found at other sites, and usually only found as fragments in waste deposits.Show less

Many types of ceramics have been transported to the islands, for personal use of the Spaniards and as exchange objects to trade with the Indians. Colonial sherds have been found at many early contact sites. A comparable study of historical and archaeological sources tells us about the characteristics of this early contact exchange of pottery. Olive jar and Majolicas are amongst the most distributed types of pottery, this is due to the practical aspects of this pottery. Indirectly these sources can also tell us something about the social meaning of the colonial ceramics on a Native America site. They show us how the indigenous inhabitants of the island of Hispaniola experienced these European sherds and how they treated them. A study of the sherds of Olive jar and Columbia Plain at the site El Cabo on the island of Hispaniola reveals us more about this social meaning. Interpretations of the sort of colonial contact, find context of the sherds in relationship with the house structures and other findings of the site, possible modification, the distribution of the sherds and trampling processes give us an insight in the way the Taíno saw the colonial pottery and sherds as a luxury item and how they treated this luxury.Show less

Show less

Show less

Show less

With the use of Inglehart and Baker (2000) I will take on a certain perspective as I aim to investigate whether certain religious connotations are still present in contemporary commercial sand paintings which have developed originally from a traditional ceremonial context. I will use several academic articles to help state my argument. On hindsight it seems that there are indeed several indications which point out that certain religious connotations do still exist in contemporary commercial products like sand paintings, but also in tapestry weavings, ceramics and baskets. Hereby I can conclude that it is not possible to declare commercial sand paintings as secular entities.Show less

This dataset serves as a backdrop onto which problems of rock art analysis and rock art documentation are placed. For the rock art analysis, several approaches are considered. First, the semiotic approach is looked at, through the use of theories constructed by Panofsky, Saussure and Pierce. Then, a contrasting way of looking at rock art is described, that also considers the landscape that these images are placed in. Both approaches have their merits and their weaknesses in application to the Aguas Buenas dataset. In the second half, documentation methods and techniques for petroglyphs are subjected to critical evaluation with the purpose of creating a method, that is easy, cost efficient and still provides a high quality. Photography has proven to fulfill these requirements, and instructions are given as to provide a handhold for (starting) rock art researchers to take accurate photographs of petroglyphs. Lastly, the database is explained and provided, and a comparison is made with other petroglyph datasets.Show less

Show less
