Using geographical analysis...Show moreHistoriography has characterised Roman North Africa as consisting of 'two worlds', a world of Roman cities on the one hand and indigenous rural hinterlands on the other. Using geographical analysis, survey archaeology and discourse analysis, this thesis researches the extent to which the marginal hinterlands (or 'shatter zones') of Late Antique North Africa were integrated into the wider Roman, Mediterranean state space. Despite the topographic difficulties for the Roman Empire to control the mountainous and steppe inland of the region, survey archaeology reveals a landscape that became thoroughly transformed under the later Roman Empire. Integration in the third to fifth centuries ended in the sixth century under the pressure of emperor Justinian's ideology of imperial renovatio.Show less

Die trend werd kort en drastisch onderbroken door keizer Julianus (361-363), die zich sterk maakte voor het klassieke heidendom. In dit werkstuk wordt Julianus' poging om in 363 de joodse tempel van Jeruzalem te herbouwen bestudeerd. Door te kijken naar de reacties op dit project in christelijke, heidense en joodse bronnen wordt een conclusie gedaan over de relaties tussen deze religies en de manier waarop ze hun identiteit vormgaven.Show less

In my...Show moreHow can a law student become a Christian in 500 AD? In his Vita Severi, Zacharias tells us how his fellow student Severus, who would later become a Christian Saint, converted to Christianity. In my thesis I have used this case study to analyse the relationship between traditional Greco-Roman education (paideia), the law school of Berytus and Christianity in the eastern part of the Mediterranean. The literary sources (the Vita Severi, Libanius' letters and the correspondence between Libanius and Basil of Caesarea) show us that the law school of Berytus is a centre of social mobility and religious freedom. In the Roman society of the fourth and fifth century jurists gain power while sophists have less to say. Meanwhile, Christianity rises and Christian intellectuals have to defend their traditional education. Why would a true Christian still study Homer? In the end, education is presented as the first step towards the higher truth of Christian doctrine. Severus can finish his legal studies, but eventually he will reach his final destination and change his toga for a habit.Show less

Aangezien de Romeinse mortaliteit...Show moreDe mortaliteit in Rome tijdens de vroege keizertijd is onmogelijk kwantitatief in kaart te brengen, vanwege een gebrek aan demografische bronnen uit de oudheid. Aangezien de Romeinse mortaliteit echter grotendeels gestructureerd werd door infectieziektes, is het door studie hiervan wél mogelijk om een kwalitatieve analyse te maken. De drie “great killers of antiquity” – malaria, tuberculose en buiktyfus – worden in deze scriptie daarom aan een onderzoek onderworpen. Aan de hand van historische kennis en hypothesen over de situatie in Rome enerzijds en moderne ideeën uit de medische wereld anderzijds, wordt een inschatting gemaakt van de invloed van deze drie ziektes op de Romeinse mortaliteit. Breed geaccepteerde ideeën over infectieziektes in Rome blijken niet voor alle ziektes in gelijke mate op te gaan. De rol van bevolkingsdichtheid, sociaaleconomische status en hygiëne verschilt sterk per besproken infectieziekte. Ook is het niet bij alle ziektes mogelijk om immuniteit te verwerven, waardoor immigranten niet per se in het nadeel waren, zoals soms wel wordt aangenomen. Het mortaliteitsregime in Rome was zeer verschillend van dat van ons; andere ziektes dan nu vormden de belangrijkste doodsoorzaken en de mortaliteit (vooral de kindersterfte) was zeer hoog. De rol van infectieziektes in de Romeinse mortaliteit is meer complex dan algemeen wordt aangenomen.Show less
