Since Levinas’s ethical philosophy has often been understood as a general response to the historical event of the Holocaust, philosophy and history seem to meet in Levinas’s later philosophical works. This thesis questions the way in which the historicity of the Holocaust can be understood in Levinas’s philosophical work. In this research, the notion of 'respect' will appear to be crucial. Ultimately, I aim to answer the question as to whether, and if so, to what extent, Levinas's insistently nonhistoricist philosophical approach to the Holocaust can really respect the Holocaust and its victims as such, that is, in their historicity.Show less

While these philosophers in an ongoing exchange broach the question of the other’s response, there remains the question if the other can also respond to what they say. Challenging the attainability of “successful” dialogue, this thesis examines the limits of thinking the response of the other philosophically. It does this through an innovative reading of “At This Very Moment in This Work Here I Am,” a remarkable text by Derrida in which he examines what it means to write a response to the works of Levinas. It shows how such a response, in view of what Levinas writes, must necessarily fail. My reading of this text shows that we must nevertheless embrace the possibility of failure, even if it means putting Levinas’s entire work at risk, since the very finitude of my own response is also what allows the other to come in and respond. Seen this way, I propose that a reading specifically aimed at the “failures” at work in Derrida’s response to Levinas can be a viable strategy not only to arrive at a better understanding of this text, but also to come up with responses of our own.Show less

On the one hand, the “ontological difference” obstructs genuine thinking of be-ing in Heidegger. On the other, this difference is unable to signify the ultimate in Levinas’ ethics. In transgressing the “ontological difference”, both philosophers introduce the concept of the call that leads into two different notions of responsibility in terms of responding. Whereas Heidegger’s historical thinking of be-ing is an originary ethics in which responsibility is determined as responsiveness of Dasein to be-ing, Levinas’ ethics implies responsibility because of social relationship to the transcendent other person who is otherwise than being. In this essay, it is claimed that these two different notions of responsibility are not mutually exclusive. The very openness of be-ing in which Dasein and be-ing are enowned to each other in the counter-resonance of needing and belonging still admits for a Levinassian ethics of the transcendent other person, albeit not primordially.Show less

Show less

Show less

And is there such a ‘thing’ as the virtual world? This thesis explores how the virtual world is disclosed to us through the Internet and how this disclosing in turn change our understanding of- and behavior (Being) in the real world. I claim that, because disclosing and disclosedness relate in a primordial way to the phenomenon of truth, the radical difference in the way the virtual world is disclosed to us in turn transforms the way truth is found by us and what truth is for us. Truth has become privatized. Therefore, the Internet is an origin. Every origin comes at a loss. In our case access to primal truth, as envisioned by Heidegger in The Question Concerning Technology. This inaccessibility means that the previous disclosedness of world will be closed off and sink into oblivion, a fate hidden in coining our day and age the post-truth era.Show less

Heidegger refuses the thing in itself, however, based on textual evidence, it is argued that Heidegger (implicitly) maintains the concept. The thing in itself is interpreted by Kant in multiple ways, notably as a ‘transcendental object =X’ and as ‘noumenon’. Based on an interpretation of Heidegger’s: Being and Time, Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics, Letter on ‘Humanism’, and Phenomenological Interpretation of Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason; and Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, both Kantian interpretations of the thing in itself are found to be implied in Heidegger’s philosophy. This is argued with the problem of transcendence in the background.Show less

Show less

My thesis is that Žižek’s rethinking of ideology makes a new kind of ideology critique possible, one which is fundamentally different from the ideology critique of the Frankfurt School. It will be shown that Žižek differs from the Frankfurt school in that he excludes the possibility of freeing oneself fully from ideological delusions. However, Žižek’s ideology critique still provides a moment of resistance against ideology and hence a moment of freedom. This makes Žižek’s rethinking of ideology and ideology critique a critical theory of society, despite the differences with the Frankfurt School. An implication of this thesis seems to be that it establishes the urgency of thinking about a reaction to today’s ideology in order to establish a more just society.Show less

Show less
