This coalition would go on to win a further four elections and, when John Howard was finally defeated at the polls in December 2007, he had become the nation’s second longest serving Prime Minister. Among all the doubtlessly important determinants of Howard’s political success, there is one that sets him apart from his predecessors in the Australian conservative tradition: his frequent and impassioned appeals to Australia’s history and national identity. This thesis addresses two principal questions, one to do with history, the other with social theory. The historical question asks what factors account for this successful realignment between politicians and national identity. The theoretical question concerns national identity itself, as a more general phenomenon in social life. Social theorists have long debated the relative priority of mass, bottom-up, grass-root social processes in constituting and shaping the substance of national identity, relative to the attempts of cultural, political, ideological and economic elites to shape and mould national identity to serve their own ideological and material ends. In brief, there is common ground in the view that national identity, as a product of social artifice is constructed. What is less clear, is the extent to which it is constructable, and if so, who has the power to do the constructing, and under what circumstances. This thesis will contribute to an understanding of the conditions under which national identity becomes malleable, allowing it to be more easily appropriated by enterprising politicians. The evidence to test my premise will come principally from a case study of John Howard’s political career.Show less

Centraal staat de vraag hoe deze beeldvorming over de 'ander' de Griekse identiteitsvorming in de vierde en vijfde eeuw v.Chr. kon beïnvloeden en tonen. Waarom wordt de 'ander' op een bepaalde manier gepresenteerd en wat betekent dit voor de Griekse identiteitsvorming? De 'ander' die onderzocht zal worden omvat de Perzen, de Egyptenaren en de Indiërs. Herodotus en Ktesias schrijven beiden over de Perzen en zij zijn duidelijk de belangrijkste ‘ander’. Onderzoek naar de beeldvorming over de Egyptenaren (waar alleen Herodotus uitgebreid over schreef) en over de Indiërs (waar alleen Ktesias uitgebreid over schreef) dient als vergelijkingsmateriaal: verschilt de beeldvorming over de laatste twee volkeren erg van die over de Perzen, met wie de Grieken lange tijd in oorlog waren? Het middels grondig literatuuronderzoek verkregen sociaalwetenschappelijk interpretatiekader, dat veel informatie verschaft over culturele identiteitsvorming, levert een categorisering op waarbinnen de antieke bronnen worden geanalyseerd.Show less

In het artikel stelt Lady Gaga dat “The influence of institutionalised religion […] is vast. So religion then begins to affect social values and that in turn affects self-esteem, bullying in school, teen suicides, all those things”. Ook wordt in het artikel verteld dat Lady Gaga haar shows ‘pop cultural church’ noemt en dat zij gelooft dat haar ‘church’ een betere invloed is dan traditionele instituties. Deze en vergelijkbare uitspraken, gepaard met het feit dat Lady Gaga in haar muziek en performance overvloedig gebruik maakt van religieuze symboliek, maken het interessant om Lady Gaga fandom vanuit een religiewetenschappelijk perspectief te bekijken. In hedendaagse westerse samenlevingen lijken mensen aan steeds meer variërende zaken betekenis te ontlenen, zelfs aan populaire cultuur. In deze scriptie wordt geprobeerd te analyseren in hoeverre Lady Gaga fandom voor haar fans de rol en functie van religie kan aannemen. Hoewel Lady Gaga fandom misschien geen religie is, functioneert het wel op vergelijkbare wijze. Er zijn meerdere kenmerken die het aannemelijk maken dat Lady Gaga fandom voor haar fans de rol en functie van een religie vervult. Ten eerste biedt Lady Gaga haar fans een zingevingssysteem; een coherente set opvattingen over goed en kwaad en de manier waarop de wereld georganiseerd zou moeten zijn. Ten tweede biedt zij een rolmodel of ideaalbeeld, aan de hand waarvan de fans hun identiteit kunnen vormen. Ten derde krijgen de fans het gevoel actief betrokken te worden bij wat Lady Gaga doet; op deze manier binden de Little Monsters zich steeds meer aan Lady Gaga en speelt zij een steeds belangrijkere rol in hun leven. Ten vierde zorgt Lady Gaga voor sociale cohesie; de Little Monsters zijn één groep met één doel. Ondanks het feit dat de monsters geen fysieke groep kunnen vormen creëert Lady Gaga voor hen een ruimte om zich wel één groep te voelen, namelijk het sociale medium ‘littlemonsters.com’. Daarnaast spoort zij hen aan om lokale, fysieke groepen te vormen. Al met al vertoont Lady Gaga fandom dus opvallend veel overeenkomsten met religie, wat ervoor zorgt dat we aan de hand van deze case study zowel meer te weten zouden kunnen komen over de aard van religie, als over de aard van fandom.Show less
