It focusses on the role that 9/11 had on the thematic content of four war movies; two made before the event and two after it. In the pre-9/11 decade the US made a number of foreign policy decisions which strengthened its cinematic representation as a conqueror. However, that attitude regarding warfare was also highly criticized in some 1990s films. This thesis argues that before 9/11, some directors were critical of increased militarism and war culture in the US and were able to voice such criticism in satirical movies, and that this changed after 9/11. Several trends become visible after the event: an apparent absence of war movies in the first few years after 9/11, an increase in war documentaries, and a shift occurring around 2009, when war movies stressed the emotional consequences and suffering caused by war. It also examines the role of 9/11 on American cinema culture in the months after the event.Show less

Gilman lived and wrote at a time of radical social reform: a time in which industrialization took over the production processes of America; in which Victorian ideals about domesticity were being reshaped; and in which Darwin’s evolution theory dominated discourses regarding the perfect civilization. This thesis focuses on two of Gilman’s publications, her economic pamphlet Women and Economics (1898) and her utopian novel Herland (1915), and analyzes the rational approach that Gilman used to challenge and destabilize the abiding social standards and gender divisions.Show less

First it summarizes how the ruki-rule works in other branches of PIE and why one would expect it to work in Lithuanian as well. Then it gives an overview of the development of PIE *s after r,u,k,i in Lithuanian and goes deeper into the opinions of several scholars on how to solve the irregularities. The two main positions are that either the ruki-rule did or it did not work in Lithuanian and examples that prove the opposite are usually explained by both sides as being new formations, borrowings or possibly of different origin. However, the evidence that ruki did take place is much bigger. The last chapter researches a selection of words that show *s after r,u,k,i to possibly find out how these can be explained. Unfortunately, a proper explanation for all the words could not be found, only for some examples new, significant points were obtained. Therefore it could very well be that the variation in s after r,u,k,i is due to older dialects, where the ruki-rule perhaps did not take place, but this cannot be proven. Therefore the author prefers the explanation that the ruki-rule originally did take place in Lithuanian, but that there are cases where it appears it didn't because of flection, borrowings, or association with suffixes in -s.Show less

Show less

Many languages have a fixed preference, for example, for either prepositions or postpositions (Dryer, 2013). If there are any occurrences of inversion, they are either obligatory, or at least, when optional, bound by restrictions; as can be seen in Broadwell (2006). Bidayuh - an Austronesian language of Borneo, a language not very well documented - shows some peculiar inversions of preposition and noun phrase. These inversions only occur with movement. The current study examines P-DP reordering for DP’s that have moved to the front of their simple matrix clause; to the front of their embedded clause; or out of their embedded clause, to the front of the matrix clause. It looks into several different prepositions and different matrix verbs, as well as different DP complements. All three movement conditions elicit different sets of restrictions on reordering P and DP. The data are discussed in the light of Merchant’s (2002) theory of swiping and Hartman and Ai’s (2009) account of it. Unfortunately, the current study cannot draw any hard conclusions. More research is needed.Show less

Most analysts understand the airing of these debates in the context of a short-term freedom of speech in Iran which only occurs during the elections. Such a view however does not do justice to the possible long-term effects of these debates on Iranian democracy. This paper will analyze the long-term effects that these television debates may have on the process of democracy in Iran as a whole. There is reason to think that a long-term effect of televised debates is likely. Exposure of Iranians to a level of freedom of speech during campaigns adds to the democratic legitimacy of the elections, and through that to the legitimacy of the elected President. This paper will analyze the live television debates between the eight presidential candidates of 2013 as data to examine ‘to what extent the presidential debates of 2013 have contributed to more democratic elections.’ This paper has chosen to focus on the conventional media, because these are more widespread than Internet in Iran.Show less

Based on An’s Chŏngch’i Wŏnnon (政治原論, Basic Principles of Politics, 1907), the first modern political science textbook in Korea, the study explores the adoption of modern Western political science, which some of these intellectuals regarded as a means of national survival. This study also revalorizes Chŏngch’i Wŏnnon and the act of translation, the most common way of learning the West yet has been undermined in the discourse of nationalist historiography, by applying the frameworks of translation studies.Show less

Both sides raided and skirmished to control strongholds on the major rivers (Rhine and Waal) and to encircle Utrecht. The final offensive of the count was a chevauchee of almost 3000 horses, which forced the Bishops surrender in June 1356. The forces collected by the count were mostly from Guelders and Holland but also from other principalities which bordered the great rivers. Their interest in trade and tolls is likely to have been a key factor to explain their involvement.Show less

Show less

The main focus will be on differences between the law codes of Æthelread Aethelbert, Alfred and Ine and Cnut. Several articles have been written about the change of the legal status of women over the course of the Anglo-Saxon period. In light of these article I will analyse the Law Codes written by Aethelbert and his succesors as well as other legal documents from the Anglo-Saxon period to see if this is indeed the case.Show less

Yet the wage gap as well as 4other hurdles remain despite these laws. The question is therefore what factors play a role in the fact that Japanese women who are among the best educated in the world, who not only have the Labor Standard Law, but an Equal Employment Opportunity Law as well, must contend with a substantial wage gap and such high unemployment rates? This thesis will consist of two parts aside from the introductory and the closing chapters. The first part will be chapter two, containing a literature review in which the research of several western scholars as well as native Japanese scholars concerning their assessment of the EEOL in Japan will be discussed and evaluated. In addition this part will also discuss the different roles companies and government play with regard to keeping the oppression of women in the labor market as it is, or furthering equal opportunity. In the second part of this thesis, chapter 3, the difficulties that working women, annd specifically working mothers, face in their day to day life will be examined on the basis of interviews conducted by scholars with these working women and mothers.Show less
