This paper proposes that rebel groups, just as nation states, find themselves in an anarchic context and as a result are trapped in a multi tiered dilemma; on the one hand they face a security dilemma which leads them to strive for cooperation, on the other hand they face the commitment problem and fear betrayal. This paper looks at three variables ‘identity’, ‘ideology’ and ‘foreign support’ as factors that are expected to reduce uncertainty, thus should help overcome the commitment problem and ultimately increase the likelihood that an inter-rebel alliance will form. Looking at two cases of inter-rebel alliances that formed during the war in Darfur; the Sudan Liberation Army/Movement (SLA/M) and the National Redemption Front (NRF) this analysis presents an exploratory attempt to identify factors and conditions that make an inter-rebel alliance more likely.Show less

Investigated time spam is the birth of the first small revolutionary movements in 2004 – when the revolutionary spark of the Colored Revolutions of Eastern Europe first crossed the Mediterranean Sea – till the historic “18 days” of 2011 which resulted in former president Hosni Mubarak resigning from office. Central argument is that the so-called "New Media" – i.e. pan-Arab satellite-TV and social media – represent but also contribute to and facilitate these social developments. Al-Jazeera and other pan-Arab satellite-TV channels have changed the way the Arab public view social and political events in their own region and have given them a voice of their own. These channels provide digital activists with a platform and break through the monopoly of state-controlled news. New Media played an indispensable role in connecting people and places, transforming loose activists into organized groups, and finally bringing the masses to the streets resulting eventually in the fall of Egypt's president Hosni Mubarak. This research is a cross-over of several fields of study including political science, communication studies and international relations. Itapplies political theories on social movements (Tilly et al) and modular revolutions (Beissinger et al), as well as Katz and Lazarsfield’s theory on the two-step process of opinion formation and several theories on media and democratization.Show less

This study analyzes debates conducted at the Finnish parliament between the years 2001 and 2011 to find out key causal mechanisms that impacted Finland‟s decision to join the Ottawa Convention...Show moreThis study analyzes debates conducted at the Finnish parliament between the years 2001 and 2011 to find out key causal mechanisms that impacted Finland‟s decision to join the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel landmines in 2012. The study found empirical support for both constitutive and constraining effects which were necessary but not alone sufficient conditions for the decision. Without the left wing parties being receptive to moral persuasion there would not have been enough political will to push the issue forward and without peer pressure stemming from other countries and the ability of international institutions to lock in domestic decisions it is highly unlikely that the right wing parties would have yielded to accept the treaty. In the absence of the latter two, the right wing parties would not have been able to justify the accession decision.Show less

For the Georgian case the explanatory merit of two theories that attempt to explain democratisation is assessed . Carothers’ revised transition paradigm better explains the stagnation of democratic progress in Georgia in the Shevardnadze era, while presidential power theory is better at explaining that stagnation in the period of Saakashvili's presidential terms.Show less

De onderzoeksgroep betrof 20 autochtonen...Show moreHet huidig onderzoek bestudeerde de verschillen in psychosociale problematiek tussen autochtone en allochtone jongeren in reboundvoorzieningen in Den Haag. De onderzoeksgroep betrof 20 autochtonen en 64 allochtonen van gemiddeld 14 jaar. Met behulp van de SDQ zijn gedragsproblemen, emotionele problemen, problemen met leeftijdsgenoten en hyperactiviteit onderzocht. Er zijn geen verschillen gevonden in de mate van gedragsproblemen en emotionele symptomen. Autochtonen voelen zich minder populair en bij hen is meer sprake van hyperactiviteit vergeleken met allochtonen. Alleen bij de allochtonen is een zwak positief verband gevonden tussen emotionele symptomen en gedragsproblemen, specifiek de mate van stelen. Na het volgen van het reboundprogramma is bij de autochtone noch bij de allochtone jongeren een verandering opgetreden in de mate van psychosociale problematiek.Show less

Om het effect...Show moreIn dit onderzoek is het effect van speltraining op de gedragproblemen van jonge, laagfunctionerende kinderen met een klinische diagnose binnen het autismespectrum (ASS) onderzocht. Om het effect van speltraining op de gedragsproblemen te onderzoeken zijn er vragenlijsten met betrekking tot probleemgedrag afgenomen bij ouders (de VOG-O) en is er een speltraining uitgevoerd met zowel een voor- als een nameting. De onderzoeksgroep bestaat uit 60 kinderen onder de 10 jaar met een klinische ASS diagnose en met of zonder een verstandelijke beperking. Er is onderzocht of het probleemgedrag van deze kinderen afnam op de vijf verschillende probleemgedrag-subschalen en totaalschaal van de VOG-O en de hieruit voortvloeiende categorieën van Rutter (Specifieke gedragsproblemen bij autisme en Nietspecifieke gedragsproblemen).Show less

Research demonstrates that on individual level, the socioeconomic status of the student is of...Show moreAccording to the socio-ecological theory the environment has an impact on student’s problem behaviour. Research demonstrates that on individual level, the socioeconomic status of the student is of profound influence. It has also been suggested that for European students, the neighbourhood surrounding the school could be important and consequently meaningful in explaining problem behaviour. Furthermore the social context, in which these factors are experienced, influences its impact on student’s behaviour. Therefore present study proposes a mediation model linking the socioeconomic status of the student and the school environment to problem behaviour and examining the role of school culture to this relation. To test this model, students from three different schools in The Hague were asked to fill in questionnaires and information about the school environment was collected. The results did not support the mediation model. Although negative school culture was related to more problem behaviour, differences in problem behaviour outcome between students were not explained by socioeconomic status or school environment. Moreover, differences between schools were of incremental value when taking into account school culture. Explanations and implications of these results are discussed.Show less

Een recent onderwerp binnen dit veld bedraagt de veronderstelde relatie tussen de kwaliteit van de executieve functies en het sociaal functioneren van een kind. In het huidige onderzoek wordt onderzocht welke unieke bijdrage de executieve functies mentale flexibiliteit en inhibitie hebben op prosociaal gedrag van 97 kinderen in de leeftijd van 7 tot 9 jaar die regulier basisonderwijs volgen. De executieve functies mentale flexibiliteit en inhibitie zijn gemeten met behulp van de SSV-taak uit de ANT (Amsterdamse Neuropsychologische Taken), prosociaal gedrag middels de ouderversie van de vragenlijst Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Er is getoetst met Pearson’s correlatietesten en multiple regressie-analyses. De resultaten laten zien dat kinderen die beter in staat zijn prepotente impulsen te onderdrukken (inhibitie) prosocialer gedrag tonen dan kinderen die deze vaardigheid minder beheersen. De relatie tussen mentale flexibiliteit en prosociaal gedrag kon in dit onderzoek niet aangetoond worden.Show less
