In this thesis we explore how numerical methods can be used to compute solutions of Reaction-Diffusion equations that resemble patterns. In the first part we focus on numerical methods in the context of ODEs, in particular the forward Euler and fourth-order Runge-Kutta methods. To then study numerical methods for PDEs, in particular how to discretize the Laplacian via a finite difference method. In the second part we turn our attention to the numerical construction of pattern solution via the use of numerical continuation. We study the concepts of numerical continuation again first for ODEs and then use the Matlab package pde2path to determine patterns of a Reaction-Diffusion equation. The main novelty is a numerical study of the effect of inhomogenous terms on pattern solutions.Show less

Daartoe gaan we uit van een centrale kracht van de vorm F~ (~r) = −krn~er, waarbij k ∈ R een constante is en n een willekeurig re¨eel getal. Allereerst wordt behandeld dat de beweging in de ruimte genoteerd kan worden als de beweging in een vlak indien de kracht centraal staat. Vervolgens wordt een algemene baanvergelijking bepaald voor willekeurige n om de banen te beschrijven. Daarbij wordt onderzocht welke banen op te lossen zijn met behulp van trigonometriche-, hyperbolische of elliptische functies. Zo niet, dan zal de vergelijking wellicht numeriek benaderd kunnen worden met behulp van de numerieke methode Runge-Kutta 4. Zo ook wordt onderzocht voor welke n er stabiele begrensde banen bestaan. In de bespreking van de banen wordt onder andere de radi¨ele positie en de radi¨ele snelheid bestudeerd omdat die belangrijk zijn voor de vorming van de baan. De banen, die beschreven worden door trigonometrische- of hyperbolische functies, worden onder andere besproken. Dit zijn de banen onder invloed van de centrale kracht waarbij n = −2, n = 1 of n = −3 geldt. De centrale kracht waarbij n = −2 is van toepassing op ons zonnestelsel en elektrische krachten tussen geladen deeltjes. De centrale kracht waarbij n = 1 is van toepassing op het uitrekken van veren. Ten slotte worden de banen onder invloed van de centrale kracht voor n = −5 besproken. Onder invloed van deze kracht worden de banen beschreven door elliptische functies. De overige banen, die beschreven worden door elliptische functies, zijn onder invloed van de centrale krachten waarbij n = −7, −4, 0, 3, 5, − 5 2 , − 7 3 , − 5 3 , − 3 2 , − 1 3 geldt.Show less

Subsequently...Show moreIn this thesis we present Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. We start by considering a two-dimensional topological quantum field theory that can be used to prove Mednykh’s formula along the way. Subsequently, we define the Dijkgraaf-Witten invariant as a partition function where we assign a specified weight to the 3-simplices of a compact, oriented and triangulated 3-manifold with boundary. The partition function depends on how we assign elements of a finite, discrete group G to all the oriented edges of the manifold. We prove that, whenever the triangulation of the boundary is fixed, the invariant does not depend on the triangulation of the manifold. Finally, we define a similar invariant where we model the weight of the 3-simplices to mimic the action of Chern-Simons theory. We demonstrate that by demanding invariance, we obtain the Dijkgraaf-Witten invariant.Show less

For these...Show moreIn this thesis we take a closer look at the effective resistance on a graph. The motivation for this is that we live in a world where there are networks found at any given place or time. For these networks it is very important to keep performing well when they are subject to attacks or failures. Here the effective resistance gives more understanding about the performance of these networks, also it gives more understanding in other fields of mathematics such as both algebraic and differential topology. I have written a small section dedicated to applications in these fields of mathematics (see section 3). In the first section we provide ourselves with some useful tools to investigate different formulas for the effective resistance. We will do this by looking at two important subspaces of a vector space determined by the edges of the graph [3]. We will go through some well known results and give a full proof of the very famous Matrix Tree Theorem. With these mathematical results we will further investigate both known and lesser known formulas for the effective resistance, and also show the connections between some of them. One of these connections provides geometrical arguments by looking at the projection on the two subspaces from section 1. Finally we also take a more probabilistic approach in order to discover more about the effective resistance.Show less
