Buoyed with the introduction of universal male suffrage in 1917 and the expansion of municipal tax powers in 1920, social democratic aldermen such as Wibaut and De Miranda sought to establish a welfare municipality in the capital. Through the municipalisation of basic necessities, housework, and social hygiene, and the provision of care for the sickly, elderly, needy, and unemployed, the alderman hoped to provide for the material welfare and mental well-being of the working-class. Municipal Socialism in Amsterdam was seen as a unique project in the Netherlands. However, the municipal socialist project in Amsterdam was inherently dependent on acquiescence of bourgeois parties in Amsterdam and the confessional national government in The Hague, not to speak of global developments and the world economy. Relativizing the uniqueness of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague concurrently pioneered different aspects of municipal socialism in the face of similar shortcomings. Amsterdam’s greatest distinction was its incredibly effective advertisement of municipal socialism in publications throughout the interwar period, reinforced by the opposition it inspired in the national bourgeois press. Practically, while Amsterdam’s spending and earnings in municipal socialist fields was generally above average, the capital did not spend or earn significantly more than other social democratic municipalities across all municipal socialist fields. Nor did the capital significantly outperform the two other major municipalities in municipal socialist fields. Thus, while the municipal socialist project in Amsterdam may have financially been above average in the Interwar period, it was not unique, nor significantly different. However, we cannot deny the political and ideational impact of the municipal socialist project in Amsterdam on interwar political thought and post-war public memory.Show less

The thesis argues that whilst portraying progressive gender roles on a superficial level, at its core, the comic book reproduces conservative gender ideology as a part of Revolutionary Nationalism.Show less

In the...Show moreClimate change, environmental regulation, and the transition to renewable energy sources have a significant impact on the private and professional lives of workers in all parts of the world. In the absence of international law, multinational corporations (MNCs) are often relocating production to countries with insufficient social and environmental legislation, for the sake of profit maximalisation. Global union federations (GUFs) have started negotiating global framework agreements (GFAs) with MNC management to ensure the social rights of MNC employees in countries with inadequate legislation. As environmental strategies of MNCs are increasingly affecting employees, GFAs have been portrayed as a platform for union involvement in environmental issues. This thesis has investigated the potential of the inclusion of environmental issues in the GFA between the MNC Safran and IndustriALL Global Union. The results indicated that while the environmental clauses of the GFA had little concrete impact, the benefits of the inclusion are two-fold. Firstly, the creation of transnational social dialogue on the topic increased worker involvement on the MNC!s environmental strategy. Secondly, the GFA created conflict resolution for potential future labour conflict on environmental issues.Show less

In this thesis I aim to demonstrate the changes that far-right discourse has undergone during the fourth-wave of far-right. In this analysis we use as a starting point, ‘the winning formula’ of Kitschelt that mainly indicates how the far-right tends to adopt the economical aspect in their discourse, especially in times of great social despair. In order to demonstrate this change, we are examining in this paper the following cases: the case of Golden Dawn, National Front and UKIP. In these cases, we are examining the political discourse of the parties, the relationship between the discourse and a crisis, to what extent the far-right is a danger to the present political system and lastly, their eurosceptical aspect. By answering these questions, and by proving the strong presence of economy within the far-right’s discourse, we aim to highlight the changes that the far-right has undergone, and how these changes are a path to normalization.Show less

Een belangrijke factor in het vertrouwen van burgers in deze voorwaardenscheppende staat is een betrouwbare, kwalitatieve publieke dienstverlening. Daarom is het extra belangrijk om de huidige problematiek in de publieke dienstverlening het hoofd te bieden. Loyale tegenspraak lijkt hier een goede rol in te kunnen spelen doordat op deze manier eerder signalen kunnen worden gesignaleerd en geagendeerd om tijdig te handelen om problemen op te lossen, of niet erger te laten worden. Loyale tegenspraak is volgens Van der Meer en Dijkstra (2021) een handeling waarbij voice wordt geuit die wel of niet wordt gewaardeerd door de normatieve omgeving op basis van ‘loyalty, trust, en appraisal’. Deze onderdelen zitten verwerkt in de drie barrières tot tegenspraak van Van der Meer en Dijkstra (2021): het mogen, willen en kunnen. Omdat deze scriptie opzoek is naar de kennis, ervaring en vaardigheden die benodigd zijn bekwaam loyale tegenspraak te kunnen uiten zijn de onderdelen van dit ‘kunnen’ van Van der Meer en Dijkstra (2021) verwerkt tot een conceptueel model voor verder onderzoek. Dit conceptueel is nader uitgewerkt en aangevuld en geverifieerd door interviews af te nemen met experts. Uit dit onderzoek is naar voren gekomen dat er geen behoefte is om deze domeinen van Van der Meer en Dijkstra (2021) verder uit te bereiden en dat het conceptueel model als basis als compleet kan worden gezien. Door middel van aanvullingen uit geschreven bronnen en interviews is er, volgens de experts, een compleet overzicht opgesteld met de benodigde kennis, ervaring en vaardigheden die om bekwaam loyale tegenspraak te kunnen tonen. Verder heeft deze scriptie ook kunnen concluderen dat de onderdelen ‘rolkennis, morele moed door zelfvertrouwen, dossierkennis en kritische adviesvaardigheden door de experts worden gezien essentieel voor het bekwaam kunnen tonen van loyale tegenspraak. Hierbij valt op dat veel van de belangrijke onderdelen van loyale tegenspraak overeenkomen met het ‘ambtelijk vakmanschap’, en dat de ambtelijke dienst al veel van deze kennis, ervaring en vaardigheden zou moeten bezitten binnen een kwalitatief ambtelijk apparaat. Naast deze randvoorwaarde van goed ambtelijk vakmanschap worden er door de experts nog twee belangrijke randvoorwaarden genoemd die deze kennis, ervaring en vaardigheden op de proef kunnen stellen: een sociaal veilige werkomgeving, en een integer bestuur. Hierbij gaat het niet om het perspectief van de leidinggevende of politiek-ambtelijke top, maar om hoe de ambtenaar dit ervaart.Show less

Deze paradox weerspiegelt een verschuiving in de rol van ambtenaren, waarbij zij steeds meer dienen als instrument voor de bewindspersoon in diens politieke ambities. De ambtenaar in kwestie balanceert tussen traditionele bureaucratische normen verweven in het ministeriële bestel en de loyale uitvoering van de wil van verkozen politici, waarbij de ambtenaar zich in politieke aangelegenheden mengt. Dit onderzoek richt zich op de ambtenaren die zich bezighouden met overheidscommunicatie via de sociale media van bewindspersonen op Nederlandse ministeries. Er wordt onderzocht in welke mate functionele politisering van hun werkzaamheden plaatsvindt en wat dit veroorzaakt.Show less

Both literary case studies exhibit the challenges of navigating a balanced hierarchy of power relations between robots and humans, because despite the mental and physical superiority of human replicas, their status as machines means robots are decidedly treated like slaves. Moreover, the thesis aims to demonstrate how both novels raise thought-provoking questions about humans' moral shortcomings in the face of their law-abiding and potentially messianic robot counterparts.Show less
