An investor decides which proportion of his wealth to invest in which asset class, thus composing his investment portfolio. Given all asset classes available to the investor, with optimization the investor tries to find the portfolio with the most favourable risk and return trade-off. Historical data and models are used to estimate asset classes’ risks and returns. A problem with this approach is that optimal portfolios are often sensitive to variation in the uncertain risk- and return estimates, as shown in [18] and [23]. An alternative is to compute not only the optimal portfolio, but also the portfolios that are near-optimal, see [16]. This results in a near-optimal region of portfolios that can be shown to be more robust. The method to compute near-optimal regions is however computationally intensive. In this thesis, we reduce the computation time to determine a near-optimal region, without losing significant accuracy. When a near-optimal region is known, an investor still needs to decide which (near-optimal) portfolio to invest in. Near-optimal region estimates can be objects of high affine dimension, which are difficult to grasp and navigate for practitioners. In this thesis, we use polytope theory and show how this can be used to study the near-optimal region in more detail.Show less

While these have developed into flourishing independent areas, each with their own experts, it is the author’s impression that the theories have a bit more in common than the literature might suggest. The goal of this thesis is therefore to exhibit connections between the general theories of C ∗ -algebras and ordered vector spaces. Coming into this project, I was already familiar with the theory of C ∗ - algebras, but I had little experience with ordered vector spaces. Therefore most of the theory is motivated from the C ∗ -algebra point of view. The thesis is built up in two parts. In the first part, we take ideas and concepts from the theory of C ∗ -algebras to ordered vector spaces, leading to concepts such as order ideals, order semisimplicity, and order unitisations. Conversely, in the second part we ask questions about the order structure of C ∗ -algebras, with an emphasis on the lattice-like structure of a C ∗ -algebra. Detailed outlines of each of these parts are given below. This thesis is written with a reader in mind having roughly the same background as I had coming into this project. As such, we assume familiarity with graduate level functional analysis and operator theory, as for instance provided by the Dutch MasterMath courses Functional Analysis and Operator Algebras. Concretely, the first part relies heavily on notions such as topological vector spaces, locally convex spaces, the Hahn–Banach theorems, weak and weak-∗ topologies, and the Krein–Milman theorem. Most of the second part only requires familiarity with the basic theory of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space, and the notion of a C ∗ -algebra. Only in Chapter 8 do we use slightly more advanced concepts from the theory of C ∗ -algebras, such as irreducible representations, the strong operator topology, and Kaplansky’s density theorem. Note that prior knowledge of partially ordered vector spaces is not assumed. The reason for this is purely circumstantial: no courses on this subject are taught at the author’s university (or elsewhere in the Netherlands) at the time of writing. We cannot aim to give a full overview of the theory; the interested reader is encouraged to consult [AT07].Show less

Finally, we will show that positive operators on a complete partially ordered vector space ordered by a norm-induced cone are continuous.Show less

We compare loss estimates based on the classic Vasicek’s approach with the assumption of normal-distributed loss distribution, and the copula approach generating heavier-tailed loss distribution. We also provide the numeric implementations of both Vasicek’s and copula modeling approaches which are widely used in bank’s risk management. In addition, we demonstrate how Vasicek’s approach can be adopted for estimating portfolio’s concentration risk charge. The last work is my own development inspired by my internship experience at the Royal Bank of Scotland. All presented results are complemented with review of the corresponding classical works in credit risk modeling.Show less

Show less

Show less

Our aim is to extend this theorem to, not necessarily Riesz, subspaces of such a C(Ω)-space. The main result entails the following, Riesz∗ homomorphisms on a pointwise order dense subspace X of C(Ω) are composition multiplication operators. Furthermore, we use this result to find additional results on Riesz∗ homomorphisms on these subspaces. We will exhibit, for example, that the inverse of a bijective Riesz∗ homomorphism on X is again a Riesz∗ homomorphism. As another corollary of the result we characterize which Riesz∗ homomorphisms on X are even complete Riesz homomorphisms. Results developed on pointwise order dense subspaces of C(Ω) can be applied in Sobolev space theory. As an analogy of the above we will develop a similar theory on subspaces of L p for a finite measure space. Most results carry over easily from the C(Ω) case. We will investigate difference in structure of Riesz∗ homomorphisms between these two type of space.Show less

Firstly, we consider to use CPV model to estimate default rate of both Chinese and Dutch credit market. It turns out that our CPV model gives good predictions. Secondly, we study the KMV model, and estimate default risk of both Chinese and Dutch companies based on it. At last, we use two mathematical models to predict the default risk of investors’ entire portfolio of loans. In particular we consider the influence of correlations. Our models show that correlation in a portfolio may lead to much higher risks of great losses.Show less

Calvert’s theorem connects the so-called duality map to contractive projections in Banach spaces. In the theorem some conditions are required. In this thesis we check if the theorem could be true when these conditions do not hold. There appear to be examples in which not all the conditions hold, while the result of the theorem actually remains intact. However, we also present examples in which not all of the conditions hold, and indeed the result of the theorem is no longer true. In the previous paragraph the duality map was mentioned. The duality map on a Banach space X is given for any x ∈ X with x 6= 0 by Jx = {φ ∈ X∗ : ||φ|| = 1, φ(x) = ||x||}. With the Hahn-Banach theorem we have that this set is non-empty. In this thesis we will see that if certain conditions hold on the Banach space X, Jx consists of exactly one element. This will be used in Calvert’s theorem, which states that if X is strictly convex and reflexive, and its dual is also strictly convex, that a closed linear subspace is the range of a linear contractive projecton if and only if the duality map of the subspace is a linear subspace of the dual space of X, with a contractive projection being a projection where each element is projected upon an element with a norm smaller than or equal to the norm of its original. Calvert’s theorem was proved by Bruce Calvert in 1975, but this original proof is very short and many of the details are left out. Therefore we will rewrite the proof, including the details that were left out. The proof of Calvert’s theorem is really based on all the conditions stated in the theorem, but we do not know for certain that all of these conditions are actually necessary. There might be a proof of an altered version of Calvert’s theorem possible in which not all of the conditions are needed. Therefore we will investigate examples in which some of the conditions do no longer hold, to see if the result of Calvert’s theorem still holds. Some examples give the impression that certain conditions on X are necessary while other examples in which different conditions on X are left out suggest that some of the conditions are not always necessary. This is an interesting subject for further research. We have also considered the shape of the unit sphere of the dual norm of a norm in R 2 when given the shape of the unit sphere of the norm itself. However this was not investigated fully enough to end up in the thesis, but might also be an interesting subject for further research. In chapter one we will start with defining and explaining the Gateaux derivative, and consider some properties it has. This will be useful when considering the duality maps and their properties, which we will do in chapter two. Chapter three will be about the contractive projection, and also about the nearest-point projection and the connection between both, which will be useful when proving Calvert’s theorem in chapter four. We will conclude with chapter five in which we investigate the examples stated above.Show less

Show less

Show less
