By this time, the work of missionaries had evolved from being engaged in direct evangelism to providing social services in educational and medical institutions, and through these services indirectly spreading Christian civilization. This thesis questions if imperialism carried out by missionaries can be beneficent, and specifically focuses on the American New Women who came to China as single female missionaries. The reasons why these women came to China were diverse, some came because of their vocation others because they were longing for adventure. However, many of these women had more practical reasons. At the beginning of the 20th century it was difficult for educated women to find suitable jobs in the United States, China offered them career possibilities as well as a social position. The American government supported the missionaries in their effort to spread Christianity and American civilization, but the reasons for this support were far from altruistic.Show less

Show less

The CCP’s 13th five-year plan is analyzed and its key-aspects are presented. The sustainability of China’s economic development according to the CCP, the World Bank and the OECD, Chinese sources, and Western sources is discussed. Seven areas crucial to ensuring the sustainability of China’s economic development, according to the literature, are identified and compared to the key-aspects of the CCP’s 13th five-year plan. This research finds that all of the seven areas deemed crucial to the sustainability of China’s economic development were addressed to a certain extent in the 13th five-year plan.Show less

Western media and think tanks often characterize the PRC as a ‘spoiler’ in dealing with the DRPK. This study will show that with regard to Beijing’s enforcing United Nations Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR) for example, it is indeed often acting in a way that undermines these sanctions. On the other hand, Beijing’s mediating and consistent urging of all parties to resume dialogue often fails to be mentioned. This study tests the PRC's multilateral stance as well as its direct interaction with North Korea, mainly with regard to endorsement of sanctions. It will also clarify the PRC’s strategic and security objectives; having a stable North-Eastern neighbor can only be achieved through the restauration of dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington as well as urging for a détente with Seoul. Abiding with every penalty that the international community urges Beijing to enforce, will only run counter to Beijing’s wish in maintaining the status-quo. This paper will present the reader with the fact that Beijing’s actions have changed through time: they should not be seen through a narrow scope, but rather through a much wider one, which befits Beijing’s own interests; something that academic literature has for the most part failed to present objectively.Show less

Next to that it describes the most recent practices and expectations of married women in urban China and their role regarding childcare and eldercare. The thesis concludes that most recently the role regarding childcare has become bigger and heavier due to a lack of affordable childcare services. The role regarding eldercare has become a little smaller due to, among others, a reinterpretation of the concept 'xiao'.Show less
