Show less

My research positions itself in the nexus of digitalization and postcolonialism, drawing on Gayatri Spivak’s renowned question whether the 'subaltern' can speak, through mobile media. Formulating a respective 'p-literature' and 'p-cinema' (referring to the prosthetic qualities of mobile media), the case studies of my choosing can instigate an indirect or 'spectral' kind of affect: one that cannot be experienced in a direct, embodied manner, but rather requires the intervention of a Western lens/network to come into existence, to subsequently become re-embodied in the form of the eventual artwork.Show less

Show less

Show less

Since its introduction within Western society, the vampire has made its way to popular media and has stayed there ever since. Whether it is the mysterious aesthetic of the vampire that people aspire to simulate, or a sparkling heartthrob that has enchanted a whole generation, the fascination with the vampire seems never-ending. For centuries humanity seems to have been captivated by this blood-sucking figure, and its presence seems to be as undying as the vampire itself. As critiques on contemporary society are often voiced within art media, such as literature, analyzing the vampire within contemporary literature could add to the academic debate about the paradigm shift within contemporary Western society. If one pays close attention to the shift within these art forms, one could argue that a close analysis can be made of society at that time. The stories we tell as a society are more telling than we might think.Show less

Therefore, literature can be analyzed as a case study in order to identify the tendencies of thought in the time that a story is written. The purpose of this study was to "analyze" how the scientific discourse in (post)modern detective fiction can be related to the changing scientific and philosophical context of the twentieth century. Through an extensive textual analysis of a detective character’s methodology, a picture could be painted of their scientific beliefs. By going through this process for two detective characters, the Victorian Sherlock Holmes and the postmodern William of Baskerville, a comparison between the two may then reveal how the shifts in the philosophical field of science and theory could have affected their methods of theoretical thought that they utilize to interpret the world and subsequently solve cases. The study showed that Sherlock Holmes never questioned the objective and observable nature of evidence and universal causality, whereas in William of Baskerville’s methodology the elusiveness of any attempt to interpret the world was a major focus. Relating these findings to the philosophical ideas that were most dominant in the beginning and the end of the twentieth century showed that this shift correlates with the manner in which society’s confidence in the objectivity of science and knowledge has diminished.Show less
