Zo’n netwerk van zenuwcellen noemen...Show moreIn de wat meer gecompliceerde organismen, zoals de mens, vormen netwerken van zenuwcellen een signaalsysteem, voor het observeren en reageren op de buitenwereld. Zo’n netwerk van zenuwcellen noemen we een bio-neuraal netwerk. We bekijken zenuwcellen als lichaamscellen die een impuls kunnen ontvangen, en die een impuls kunnen doorgeven aan een andere zenuwcel, waarmee die in contact staat. We kijken in deze scriptie naar het potentiaalverschil van een netwerk van zenuwcellen, uitgezet tegen de tijd. Om inzicht te krijgen in zulk soort modellen, moeten we ons eerst beperken tot de werking van een enkele zenuwcel. Hierbij zullen we numerieke experimenten uitvoeren met CONTENT. Vervolgens zullen we uitgebreid een wiskundig model voor de membraanpotentialen van de cellen in een bio-neuraal netwerk afleiden, en ook daarmee numerieke experimenten uitvoeren. We zullen ons bezighouden met twee versies van het model: een versie zonder tijdsvertraging, delay, en een versie met delay. De delay ontstaat uit het feit dat het tijd kost om als prikkel van het ene neuron naar het andere te reizen. Het doel van het onderzoek is, behalve het ’verkennen’ van deze modellen, het uitzoeken van belangrijke verschillen tussen de twee modellen. De numerieke analyse van het tweede model, het model waar er sprake is van een vertraging, zal worden gedaan met Matlab. Hierbij heb ik zelf een programma binnen Matlab geschreven, die een delay-vergelijking kan oplossen met behulp van een methode die Successieve Integratie heet. The form of the shock wave depends on...Show morePlanetary nebulae (PN) often have weird shapes, due to an inhomogeneous interstellar medium. We investigated the propagation of the shock wave that forms a PN. The form of the shock wave depends on the initial density distribution. The equation that describes the shock propagation is a first order non-linear partial differential equation. We found a analytic solution for the equation after a certain assumptions for some basic functions and made estimations for more complex density functions. We also made a model that used toroidal coordinates and one in three dimensions. The toroidal model resembles the Red Rectangle nebula. We also inverted the two-dimensional equation with some assumptions to derive the initial density function from a known shock wave. We used a numerical model to compute the density profile for eleven known planetary nebula. This leads to a qualitative classification into the ellipsoidal, disk and and irregular nebula. Inserting some test shock waves into this equation shows the existence of a extraordinary clover like shape in the density function.Show less

Because of the non-abelian property of...Show moreWe introduce the mixed model of sandpile+anti-sandpile, which is called SA model. In the SA model, we are free to add or remove a particle from a chosen site. Because of the non-abelian property of the toppling operators and anti-toppling operators, the SA model becomes subtle, and the group property existing in the pure sandpile model and anti-sandpile model does not hold in the SA model. Because of the non-local property of addition operators and anti-addition operators, the processes related to the sandpile, and anti-sandpile are not Feller. The traditional way of constructing the interacting particle processes in infinite volume, e.g., via Hille-Yoshida, does not work in these cases, other ways of construction are necessary. In the construction of sandpile+anti-sandpile process (SA process), we obtain the semigroup of the process for some special configurations and some special functions by series expansion and then using monotonicity of the process, we can extend it to the general case. The SA process shows a new transition phenomenon: it seems that the stationary measure is the result of a “competition” between the generators. The sandpile model, anti-sandpile model are “self-organized” critical systems. In recent years, this is challenged because the special nature of the dynamics can be considered as an implicit fine tuning that makes sure the system can reach criticality, therefore the “selforganized” critical behavior of these systems can be thought of as a more conventional phase transition between “stabilizable” and “non-stabilizable”. We discuss the conditions for a mixed system to reach a stable state both in finite volume and infinite volume.Show less

After a few months of wrestling through all the theory it finally became clear to me. The next thing to do was numerically constructing the behaviour predicted in the theory, and after that writing this report. Most of all I want to thank my supervisor Prof. Dr. R van der Hout for all of his support. We almost met weekly and discussed the progress.
