The style of the ceiling painting is linear decoration,...Show moreThe subject of this research is a ceiling painting in a corridor of 27 meter long in the Domus Augustana on the Palatine Hill in Rome, Italy. The style of the ceiling painting is linear decoration, based on its geometrical design, colour scale, while missing the architectural elements visible in other styles. The painting has been dated to the Post Severan period (235-285 AD). This type of style is often found in minor rooms of a building. Unfortunately little research has been done on ceiling painting of the 2nd and 3rd centuries and no similar painting has been found. The walls of the corridor are decorated with marble slabs of type 1 decoration style often found in minor rooms. The date of the marble decoration is the reign of Hadrian. While the walls itself are constructed in different phases, mainly in the reign of Nero and early Flavian period. Out of the space syntax analyses with JASS and Depth Map could also be concluded that the corridor is a minor room in the Domus Augustana. The corridor gave access to a group of rooms which have a secluded character, which were probably used for small banquets and other meetings.Show less

The Mediterranean like environment of Pakefield led to the interpretation that...Show moreRecent discoveries in the Cromer Forest-bed Formation, UK, demonstrated early colonisation of northern Europe. The Mediterranean like environment of Pakefield led to the interpretation that hominins before 500 ka may have been able to colonise northern Europe only under environmental conditions that were familiar to them (Parfitt et al. 2005; Roebroeks 2006). The discovery of archaeological sites at Happisburgh (UK) provided new data that were not in compliance with the ecological signal established above (Parfitt et al. 2010). This thesis presents evidence from Happisburgh Site 1 and Site 3 that indicates early hominin presence in northern Europe before 500 ka in cool and forested environments. Theories that can explain hominin presence in these cooler environments are addressed as well as technological innovations the hominins may have adapted to survive the environment. The coastal perspective theory explains hominin presence in northern Europe due to adaptations to coastal zones which would provide an abundant habitat mix, plenty of resources and a temperate low seasonal climate (Cohen et al. 2012). Technological adaptations to cold winters (below zero) may have been needed, but are not irrefutably reflected in the archaeological record of the Happisburgh sites. The Happisburgh sites have large implications for our understanding of the ecological tolerances and behaviour of early hominins in Europe.Show less
In deze scriptie wordt er gekeken naar de vraag “Is aan de hand van vondsten uit beerputten gelegen bij het gasthuis aan het Canadaplein in Alkmaar iets op te maken over de achtergronden van de...Show moreIn deze scriptie wordt er gekeken naar de vraag “Is aan de hand van vondsten uit beerputten gelegen bij het gasthuis aan het Canadaplein in Alkmaar iets op te maken over de achtergronden van de mensen die er in verbleven, en zeggen de vondsten iets over het functioneren in de gasthuizen in het algemeen?” Dit wordt gedaan aan de hand van het bekijken van historische bronnen en het bekijken van het materiaal uit de vondstcomplexen. Vervolgens wordt er een vergelijking gemaakt met materiaal uit huizen met een lage en hoge huurwaarde, aan de hand van een artikel. Ook is er een vergelijking gemaakt met ander gasthuis materiaal. Het materiaal zegt niet veel over het functioneren in het algemeen in gasthuizen, maar wel over het gasthuis zelf. Het materiaal is grotendeels zelf meegenomen door de proveniers en werd later mogelijk langer doorgebruikt door het gasthuis. Er is geen duidelijke standaard uitrusting wat materiaal betreft, zoals het 17de eeuwse materiaal uit het Oude gasthuis in Delft. Wel is er een functie toe te wijzen aan het materiaal zelf. Het betreft voornamelijk keukengerei, borden, grapen en koppen, hoewel beerput 1201 een duidelijke ‘drink’ functie heeft. Het materiaal is niet luxe en de proveniers lijken uit de middenklasse te komen. Wanneer de overzichtstekening en de plattegrond uit vermoedelijk 1785 naast elkaar worden gehouden kan er gekeken worden hoe de beerputten mogelijk lagen ten op zicht van de gasthuisindeling. Of de indeling ongeveer hetzelfde was in de periode 1600-1650 is dan nog de vraag maar wel wordt duidelijk dat de proveniers hun beerputten hoogstwaarschijnlijk hebben moeten delen. Het materiaal kan dus wel iets zeggen over de achtergrond van de mensen. Het zegt echter veel minder over het functioneren in de gasthuizen in het algemeen, afgezien van het feit dat het gasthuis een voornamelijk verzorgende rol heeft, wat af te lezen is in de bronnen en de combinatie van het vele keukengerei en de zalfpotten.Show less

Because of the size of the polis and the...Show moreIn this thesis the political, social, demographical and geographical relationships between the demes of Attica and the city of Athens are investigated. Because of the size of the polis and the political organization of it Athens was an anomaly in the ancient world. Democracy was first implemented in Attica in 508/7 and therefore Athens played a unique role in history. The large number of settlements, or demes, that together formed the polis of Athens shared political power in the Ecclesia and the Boulé and although this power was never divided among them equally, the system worked for almost two centuries. Many demes housed larger populations than a normal-sized polis outside of Attica did so we must wonder how they were organized and how their size influenced their political power in the polis of Athens. Through archaeological remains and written sources the importance of several unique demes is clarified and the balance of power that existed in democratic Athens is confirmed. Through research we come to find out that very large demes located in the rural or coastal areas could very well have less political power than a much smaller deme within the city-walls of Athens. The reason for this is simple, the Ecclesia, or assembly, was the only legislative power in the polis and the great majority of its members came from the direct vicinity of the city since they were the only ones able to participate in the democratic processes of the polis on a daily basis. The rural and coastal areas of Attica therefore wielded less legislative power despite their superiority in numbers of inhabitants. Through equal representation in the Boulé the demes retained a certain amount of power though so the system, that was implemented by Kleisthenes in 508/7, essentially worked.Show less

Volgens historische bronnen was er geen sprake van medische behandeling en lag de nadruk van de zorg...Show moreEr is weinig bekend over de ontwikkeling en organisatie van gasthuizen uit de late Middeleeuwen. Volgens historische bronnen was er geen sprake van medische behandeling en lag de nadruk van de zorg vooral op de geestelijke gesteldheid van de zieken en armen. In deze scriptie is onderzoek gedaan naar het 13e en 14e-eeuwse aardewerkcomplex van het Oude en Nieuwe Gasthuis uit Delft om meer kennis te vergaren over de organisatie van laatmiddeleeuwse gasthuizen. Het aardewerk bestaat vooral uit materiaal dat de aanwezigheid van een groot huishouden suggereert: bakpannen, kannen, grapes en potten die voornamelijk van grijsbakkend aardewerk, roodbakkend aardewerk en steengoed zijn gemaakt komen meer voor dan andere vormen en baksels. In vergelijking met Delftse huishoudens uit de 14e en 15e eeuw lijkt het ONG aardewerk niet anders te zijn. Ook laat het gasthuiscomplex geen grote mate van standaardisatie zien: de aanwezige objecten komen in grote variatie van vormen en maten voor. Er werden enkele objecten gevonden die aan medische zorg kunnen worden gekoppeld. In vergelijking met het aardewerk van het klooster waardoor het gasthuis gesticht werd is het ONG aardewerk van een lagere status. Bovendien werd het ONG materiaal vergeleken met aardewerkcomplexen van andere gasthuizen. Het was lastig om voor vergelijking geschikte aardewerkcomplexen van gasthuizen uit dezelfde periode als het ONG aardewerk te vinden. Weinig 13e en 14e-eeuwse aardewerkcomplexen van gasthuizen zijn daar uitgebreid genoeg voor onderzocht. Daarom werd het ook vergeleken met 15e en 16e-eeuws aardewerk uit gasthuizen, waarvan meer informatie beschikbaar is. Helaas konden deze complexen alleen op oppervlakkige wijze vergeleken worden: alleen de functie van het aardewerk is vergeleken. Door het hiaat in onderzoek naar aardewerk van gasthuizen kon geen diepgaande vergelijking gemaakt worden en zijn de conclusies van de vergelijkingen niet verrassend: aardewerk van gasthuizen tussen de 13e en 16e eeuw werden vooral gebruikt voor het bereiden en verspreiden van voedsel en drank. Er bestaat een enorme variëteit in de vormen en afmetingen van aardewerk van gasthuizen, allemaal zijn ze niet makkelijk van grote huishoudens te onderscheiden. Vormen die betrekking zouden kunnen hebben op geneeskunde werden nauwelijks gevonden. Om een beter en preciezer beeld te kunnen krijgen van aardewerk uit laatmiddeleeuwse gasthuizen, en dus meer inzicht in de organisatie van gasthuizen, is veel meer onderzoek nodig.Show less

Het heeft verschillende betekenissen en namen in verschillende culturen en regio’s in heel Meso-Amerika. Vaak wordt de Nahual gezien als iemands alter ego, een nevenwezen, waarmee het contact plaatsvindt in dromen. Er zijn ook mensen die in hun Nahual kunnen veranderen. Bij Nahualisme is er een nauwe relatie en zelfs identificatie tussen mensen en dieren/natuurlijke elementen. Dit maakt dat de Nahual als onderdeel van de persoon, de ‘zelf’, kan worden gezien, wat het een aspect van ‘personhood’ maakt. Vandaag de dag komt Nahualisme nog altijd voor, hoewel veranderd door westerse wereldvisies en verschijnselen als syncretisme. In hoeverre het Nahualisme nog gelijk is aan de prekoloniale versie is onduidelijk, maar door archeologisch bewijs en koloniale bronnen kunnen we er zeker van zijn dat het een prekoloniaal concept is. In de koloniale tijd werd Nahualisme over het algemeen als iets duivels, hekserij, gezien. Dit beeld is hedendaags nog steeds van invloed. Nahualisme speelt niet alleen binnen de Meso-Amerikaanse religie, maar ook binnen de ideeën over ziekte en gezondheid. Mens en Nahual delen hetzelfde lot, wat maakt dat wanneer iets met de één gebeurd, dit ook het geval is bij de ander. Mensen kunnen van zowel hun eigen Nahual als die van een ander (een vijand) ziek worden. Per cultuur zijn er verschillende rituelen en gebruiken om een persoon en zijn Nahual weer beter te maken, zoals bijvoorbeeld het uitvoeren van een limpia (een reiniging).Show less
This thesis examined the possible function(s) of Harappan fortifications and evaluated the possibility of the fortifications being used as a water barrier against flooding, as military structures...Show moreThis thesis examined the possible function(s) of Harappan fortifications and evaluated the possibility of the fortifications being used as a water barrier against flooding, as military structures or if the fortifications had a more ideological function. The military aspects of the fortifications will be the focus of this thesis and are evaluated according to primary and secondary features. The primary features are 1. The bastion, 2. The defended gate and 3. The V-sectioned moat while the secondary features are the parapet, postern, rampart, salient, tower and the thickness of the walls. Eight sites of the Indus valley have been examined: 1. Banawali, 2. Harappa, 3. Kalibangan, 4. Mohenjo-daro, 5. Dholavira, 6. Kuntasi, 7. Lothal and 8. Surkotada. It has been concluded that flooding did not play an important role in erecting the fortifications. The fortifications all have primary and secondary military features in some degree (except Lothal) which points to a military function of the fortification. Moreover, the turbulent start of the Mature phase is connected with the construction of the fortifications and indicates the need for such structures. However, ideology plays a big part in Harappan society as well and therefore some of the fortifications have a monumental aspect. It is therefore suggested that the fortifications in general performed both a military and a symbolic function.Show less

Hierbij ligt vooral de nadruk op de achtergrond, motieven en muzikale producties van de artiesten (voornamelijk rappers) die hiphop muziek en cultuur maken en uitdragen, en niet in het bijzonder op de cultuurindustrie en de jonge consumenten van zowel binnen- als buitenlandse hiphop en bijbehorende stijlen. Bijzondere aandacht gaat in de case studies naar 'islamitische hiphop' in Jakarta.Show less

Er wordt getracht de ontwikkeling van de funderingstechnieken te...Show moreDeze scriptie richt zich op de ontwikkeling van verschillende funderingstechnieken tijdens de middeleeuwen in West-Nederland. Er wordt getracht de ontwikkeling van de funderingstechnieken te verklaren door funderingen uit drie verschillende steden met elkaar te vergelijken. Daarbij wordt gelet op het verschil in geologische ondergrond, de rijkdom van de bouwer, mogelijke funderingstradities en eventuele invloed door externe relaties. De gekozen steden zijn Alkmaar en Amsterdam in Noord-Holland en Dordrecht in Zuid-Holland. Nadat de analyse was afgerond was de conclusie dat de kwantiteit van de informatie onvoldoende was, al is hoogstwaarschijnlijk de geologische ondergrond het meest bepalend geweest voor de keuze van de funderingstechniek.Show less

After decolonisation of the British Indies, this picture completely turned upside town and a lot of Parsis left India for a western country such as the UK and the US. Thus, they had to reconstruct their identity both in India and the US and the UK. This thesis examines this double identity reconstruction by means of a combination of literary analysis and discourse analysis.Show less

This thesis investigates who the most influential explorers and archaeologist were during the 19th, 20th and 21st century, and how their choices shaped Palenque. It will also look into what literate and theoretical streams were of influence on the explorers and archaeologists. After applying theory to the data, the outcome is that archaeology is not only driven by the personal interests of the archaeologist, but also by the agenda of the funder, who seems mainly interested of the financial benefits of archaeology. In Mexico, financial benefits of archaeology come mainly through tourism, and therefore the appearance of archeological sites is high adapted to appeal to the eye of the tourist and to insure national income by means of tourism.Show less

Bij ouders van kinderen met autisme blijkt dit tevens het geval te zijn, maar waar komt die stress precies vandaan? Om de juiste interventie te kiezen is het belangrijk om deze vraag te beantwoorden. Daarom wordt in dit onderzoek gekeken in hoeverre de ouderlijke stressbeleving te voorspellen valt vanuit de hoeveelheid autististische kenmerken van het kind en in hoeverre de mate van autistische eigenschappen van de ouder dit effect versterken. Dit is gedaan met behulp van 49 kinderen met een stoornis binnen het autismespectrum tussen de 8 en 19 jaar. De ouders zijn vergeleken met 49 ouders van kinderen zonder autismespectrum stoornis. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat de hoeveelheid autistische eigenschappen van het kind van invloed zijn op de ouderlijke stressbeleving, dat de hoeveelheid autistische eigenschappen van de ouder op zichzelf staand geen significante invloed hebben op de ouderlijke stressbeleving, maar dat deze hier wel een versterkende factor van zijn.Show less

Deze stelling is op weinig archeologisch bewijs gebaseerd. Het doel van deze scriptie is dan ook de stelling te verifiëren door de nederzetting te vergelijken met de handelsnederzetting Dorestad enerzijds en de agrarische nederzettingen Oegstgeest en Koudekerk anderzijds.Show less

He arrived with a group of fellow Franciscan friars with the mission to establish a new Christian utopia where a thousand year peace would reign. Sahagún was ordered to write down all that he could find about Nahua culture which resulted in the Historia general. In this manuscript there are various rituals and deities described in full detail and they are said to be idolatrous. Sahagún would take his students from his college in Tlatelolco and gather pictographic information from Tepepulco in order to copy it into the Primeros Memoriales. In this manuscript it is clear that European elements are incorporated in pre-colonial drawings. The Nahua population proved difficult in adopting the Christian faith and kept holding on to traditional beliefs, often mixing old rituals with Christian rituals. This was something Sahagún became upset about, knowing that the traditional rituals were actually in honour of Satan and his demons that needed to be combated. When Sahagún reached old age he was of strong conviction that the mission to establish the utopia had failed and he suggested that Christianity should move on to other parts of the world where conversion would be more successful.Show less
