The articles from the historical newspaper archives were collected from a database...Show moreThis research evaluates the framing of Nazi Germany in Turkish newspapers, Cumhuriyet and Tan, from 1939 to 1945. The articles from the historical newspaper archives were collected from a database and a website which was then analyzed with Pan and Kosicki’s four categories for determining frames. There were two main reasons for choosing Cumhuriyet and Tan: because they were the two of the most published newspapers during the Second World War and second was that a clear distinction was identified between the two. By using a qualitative analysis method, the study investigates how these media outlets view Nazi Germany within the broader themes of Turkish neutrality, German propaganda, and the Rise and Fall of the Second World War-era Germany. It was found that Cumhuriyet maintained a generally positive attitude towards Nazi Germany while occasionally expressing criticism which is characterized by a measured and balanced approach. In contrast, Tan's framing was marked by a consistent and unyielding critique of the Nazi nation approaching it with a negative approach. The findings aim to contribute to the broader discussion on the role of media framing in shaping perceptions, particularly the Turks.Show less

The conception of an organisation such as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), who defines much of their ideology on the subordination of women, allowing these women to hold frontline positions, in some ways be the face of the organisation, is puzzling in nature and shows the contradiction that the organisation purports. This thesis explores ISIS' transition to utilising female combatants and the reconciliation of their ideology with this action.Show less

Tijdens een lesovergang gaat er vaak effectieve...Show moreDe basisschool is een plek waar leerlingen zich kunnen ontwikkelen en daarom zou de tijd op school zo effectief mogelijk ingezet moeten worden. Tijdens een lesovergang gaat er vaak effectieve onderwijstijd verloren. Dit onderzoek had als doel te onderzoeken in hoeverre effectieve leerkrachtgedragingen voor een lesovergang worden toegepast in de praktijk. Ook zijn er verschillende soorten lesovergangen onderzocht op aanwezigheid van effectieve leerkrachtgedragingen. Om dit te onderzoeken heeft allereerst een literatuurstudie plaatsgevonden om effectieve leerkrachtgedragingen te identificeren. Deze leerkrachtgedragingen zijn verdeeld in twee categorieën namelijk ‘organisatie’ en ‘gedrag’. Vervolgens is er een observatielijst opgesteld. Aan de hand van deze observatielijst hebben er observaties plaatsgevonden op twee verschillende scholen. Er hebben 18 leerkrachten meegedaan aan dit onderzoek. Uit de resultaten blijkt, dat waar leerkrachten al effectieve strategieën gebruiken op het gebied van de organisatie van lesovergangen, ze meer variatie laten zien op het gebied van hun eigen handelen tijdens de lesovergangen. Leerkrachten hebben vaak een overzichtelijke plek in de klas en hebben vaak actieve supervisie. Leerkrachten reageren vaker op ongewenst gedrag dan op gewenst gedrag en leerkrachten zouden vaker gedragsverwachtingen moeten meegeven zodat leerlingen ook gewenst gedrag gaan vertonen. In de discussie wordt ingegaan op de rol van leerkrachtgedrag bij verschillende type lesovergangen.Show less

While many studies have been done on self-stigma, perceived stigma and on the impact of stigmatization on patients with psoriasis, few studies have focused on the extent and predictors of public stigma towards psoriasis. This cross-sectional study is the first study to date to focus on the extent of public stigma towards psoriasis in the Dutch population, as well as to examine the possible predictive value of four subscales of empathy as assessed by the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI); perspective taking, PT; fantasy, FS; empathic concern, EC; and personal distress, PD. Respondents (N = 121) were asked to watch video vignettes, after which public stigma was measured with the Impact of Chronic Skin Disease on Daily Life (ISDL). A paired-samples t-test and multiple regression analysis were conducted. Results suggests that that there is public stigma towards psoriasis in the Dutch population (t(119) = -6.55, p < .001). A weak positive relation between personal distress (PD) and public stigma was found (B = .08, p = .04), while the other three empathy subscales (PT, FS and EC) were not found to be significant predictors for public stigma towards psoriasis (all p-values >.05). These results add to the theoretical knowledge about psoriasis and theory development and suggest that interventions against public stigma towards psoriasis might not focus on eliciting empathy, as other mechanisms would possibly be more beneficial in reducing public stigma. Future studies should replicate the study with other measurement instruments.Show less

It will provide insight into the question: “How does the City of San Francisco encourage its citizens to cycle?”. The research method employed is a critical analysis of policy documents and complementary documentation, involving information on the websites of local governments, online newspaper articles and blogs about cycling policies in San Francisco. Moreover, the topic will be placed in a broader context: a literature review on successful European models will be conducted to identify best practices that can be incorporated in San Francisco’s bicycling strategy to further encourage cycling. Possible obstacles that may hinder the application of European models will also be discussed briefly. Currently, San Francisco is mainly focusing on the provision of cycling infrastructure, but neglects the importance of a multi-faceted approach including measures that reduce the attractiveness of car usage, as implemented in successful European models.Show less

Een factor die van invloed is op de prestaties van...Show moreIn 2021 is de wet voor burgerschapsonderwijs op basisscholen aangescherpt, met het doel de burgerschapscompetenties van leerlingen te verbeteren. Een factor die van invloed is op de prestaties van leerlingen is de self-efficacy van de leerkracht. De mate van self-efficacy van een leerkracht hangt samen met het sociaal welbevinden van leerkrachten. In dit onderzoek werd het verband tussen sociaal welbevinden in werkrelaties en de mate van self-efficacy van leerkrachten in burgerschapsonderwijs bestudeerd. Dit werd gedaan door middel van vragenlijstonderzoek onder 59 leerkrachten. Leerkrachten rapporteerden in hoeverre zij zich in staat voelden verschillende burgerschapsonderwerpen te onderwijzen en in hoeverre zij sociaal welbevinden in werkrelaties ervaarden. Uit de analyses van het verband kwamen geen significante resultaten. Daarom kon niet geconcludeerd worden dat er een verband bestaat tussen sociaal welbevinden in werkrelaties en de mate van self-efficacy die leerkrachten ervaren bij burgerschapsonderwijs. Voor de praktijk betekent deze conclusie dat wellicht andere factoren, zoals kennis of motivatie, bekeken moeten worden om de self-efficacy van leerkrachten op het gebied van burgerschapsonderwijs en de burgerschapscompetenties van leerlingen te stimuleren. Meer onderzoek naar factoren die de kwaliteit van burgerschapsonderwijs kunnen bevorderen is nodig.Show less

Als eerst zijn er uit drie reviews van wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar begrijpend leesonderwijs zes elementen gehaald die van belang zijn bij het vormgeven van effectief begrijpend lezen binnen het basisonderwijs. Deze elementen zijn: woordenschat en achtergrondkennis, leesstrategieën, leesmotivatie, technisch lezen, rijke taalomgeving en interactie. Het doel van het onderzoek was om na te gaan hoe deze elementen vormgegeven konden voor PI de Brug. Na het opstellen van de elementen is er onder de werknemers van de school een vragenlijst uitgezet over hoe het begrijpend leesonderwijs binnen de school ervaren wordt. Op basis van de resultaten uit de vragenlijst en wat er bekend is in de literatuur zijn er specifieke adviezen opgezet voor de school. Uit de resultaten bleken woordenschat en achtergrondkennis, leesmotivatie en een rijke taalomgeving als meest belangrijk te worden gezien binnen de school. Technisch lezen en interactie kwamen als laagste uit de resultaten. Deze resultaten en de literatuur hebben geleid tot aanbevelingen voor het begrijpend leesonderwijs op PI de Brug. Aanbevelingen waren bijvoorbeeld om een methode met veel aandacht voor interactie te vermijden, en leesmotivatie en een rijke taalomgeving te stimuleren door veel verschillende tekstsoorten en -structuren aan te bieden.Show less

However, the exploitation of...Show moreThe Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) in the Pacific Ocean holds significant reserves of polymetallic nodules, making it a potential exploitation area for deep sea mining. However, the exploitation of this shared natural resource poses challenges in terms of sustainability and resource management. This thesis examines the governing framework of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) for the management of deep sea mining in the CCZ. The study draws upon the design principles for governing the commons proposed by Elinor Ostrom to analyze the policies and draft regulations of the ISA. By examining to what extent the policies and regulations of the ISA are aligned with Ostrom's principles, this research aims to evaluate the current governance framework for the management of the CCZ and its resources.Show less
