Their first undisputed occurrence started in the Aurignacian (40-28 ky), which happened to coincide with the arrival of AMH in Europe. After this point, therianthropes are found throughout the entire human history, in a wide variety of worldwide cultures. What makes them so appealing is not just their ambiguous visual nature, but in particular their enigmatic meaning and the different ways they are perceived. Already since the early days of therianthrope research, their meaning has aroused much debate. Interpretations of l'art pour l'art, totemism, hunting magic and means of communication have passed the review. A widely professed theory is the shamanistic interpretation, put forward by South-African scholar David Lewis-Williams. He proposed that therianthropes were hybrid creatures seen by shamans during the last stage of a trance, in which all sorts of visions would merge with each other. In recent years the neurocognitive approach has gained many followers: this theory applies cognitive neuroscience to evolutionary cognitive archaeology. This in order to interpret specific patterns of archaeological evidence, in terms of the cognition of those who produced it and the evolutionary occurrence of specific features of human cognition. According to the proponents of this model, therianthropes are a classical example of the capabilities of the modern mind, that is able to merge two or more separate abstract concepts into one. All necessary components of this ability are believed to have evolved over thousands of years and probably started in H. heidelbergensis. Both theories have some appeal, yet they remain close to impossible to prove, because it is so hard to make inferences about the state of mind of Palaeolithic people and their intentions behind the production of enigmatic creatures such as therianthropes.Show less

Although the study of hearths and their function can provide valuable information about past human behaviour there appear to be no real guidelines available for this type of research. This results in loss of valuable information and possible misinterpretation of hearths. Part 1 of this thesis gives an introduction of various aspects of hearths, such as their origins, their forms and functions, different types of fuel and some analysis methods that can be applied to study them. Part 2 consists of a case study of a hearth from the French middle Neolithic site Trinité-sur-Mer. For this study one of the 15 hearths present at the site was analysed in order to determine its function. For this purpose reflectance analysis carried out on the charcoal fragments from three different samples from the hearth in order to get an idea of the temperatures that were reached in the hearth. Some specific choices regarding the manner of sampling and processing the samples were made and phytolith analysis was carried out to determine whether these choices resulted in as little damage and loss of material as possible. It was found that the choices made within this study had the desired effect. Furthermore the reflectance analysis and fuel determination showed that the hearth from Trinité-sur-Mer probably was a domestic hearth fuelled with wood of Quercus sp. and reached temperatures of at least 400 °C.Show less

Show less

People use them to decide on clothing, holiday destinations and as subject of conversations. Nowadays the forecasts are quite accurate up to a week ahead, whereas thirty years ago one could only rely on 2-days forecasts. Of course the results of the forecasts are easy to grasp, but how about the methods to obtain those results, e.g. the underlying theory? In chapter 2 we will state the governing equations of atmospheric flow. A physical aspect of the system, called the Coriolis effect, will then be described in more detail. After this we start looking for well-behaving solutions; traveling waves. This is done by transforming the system into new coordinates and manipulating the system in such way that we only need to solve one equation. In section 3 we obtain some qualitative results about waves under various conditions using phase plane analysis. Special attention is paid to connections between equilibrium points. Stability of the solutions will be discussed briefly in section 4. In section 5 the model used in the first sections is compared to an other model; the Eady model. The Eady model uses a slightly different approach but will turn out to also be quite similar.Show less

The specific behaviour, which can differ from a simple random walk, is presented in the form of simulations and depends on some chosen parameters. The model for the random walk is as follows: the walker chooses a starting position on the integers (1-dimensional walk) and an initial value/weight is given to every edge between two neighbouring sites called the local time profile. Our stochastic model represents the probability to jump one position, after one unit of time, to the right which also depends on the local time profile. When the walker doesn’t jump right the walker jumps one position to the left. The local time of the corresponding edge is raised with an amount of one and the local time profile is updated after every step. The underlying idea in this model is the possibility to choose parameters in such a way the local time profile determines the qualitative asymptotic behaviour of the walk. We start with the just described model and prove for a range of parameters that the walk eventually gets stuck on a single edge. This will be done in three steps. First we prove the walk gets stuck with positive probability. Next we show the walk must have a finite range and we use Rubin’s Theorem to complete the proof. Further we investigate extended models where the walker can jump one or two positions at a time and find out that for one choice of parameters the type of behaviour is not unique. In the remainder we discuss the main result from the article Stuck walks by Erschler, T´oth and Werner. The theorem stated there gives a range of parameters such that the walk gets stuck on two, three, . . . edges.Show less

Show less

The only derivate in a Cauchy problem is du dt , where u is the sought-after solution. However, because we consider such a general setting, we could for example also formulate some systems of multiple higher order differential equations as a Cauchy problem. In section 3 we consider certain stochastic integral equations. The connection with the (inhomogeneous) abstract Cauchy problem is, that the latter is (almost) a special case of the stochastic integral equations that we study. The idea is that the stochastic element adds the resulting effect of random ’white noise’. This can be useful in all sorts of applications, since it can model the effects of small changes one could not predict. We first consider a stochastic integral equation in a separable Hilbert space, for which an existence and uniqueness proof is known (see [GA]). We would like to generalise this by allowing values in an arbitrary Banach space. This is done in section 3.3. We will also prove a boundedness result there. We finish in section 3.4 with some specific examples of stochastic integral equations. I would like to thank my thesis supervisor Onno van Gaans for the effort he has put into guiding me in the right direction. Thanks to his regular help I have always had the sense of really getting somewhere.Show less

It mathematically describes two methods, one based on the results from the steady state of a chemical network, and one based on the results of different time series in a chemical network. For these methods, also the Singular Value Decomposition is described. This decomposition is helpful in solving overdetermined systems of equations, which is a common situation when applying these methods in an experimental environment.Show less

Show less

Marosvölgyi and Hans J. van Gorkom published an article named Cost and color of photosynthesis [1]. In this article an equation is derived that gives the optimal energy production through photosynthesis relative to the cost in maintaining the 'light harvesting' system. In this bachelor thesis we set out to understand the model assumptions and the equations which follow from the model derived in [1]. We also wanted to see if the method of 'map iteration' worked for finding solutions to the equations obtained. That is, firstly to investigate whether these iterations would converge to a solution for each starting point and secondly if the obtained solution is unique. Since this was not possible by hand MATLAB was used for simulation and iteration. Due to the limited amount of time available for this bachelor project we were not able to solve all the questions we came up with. A lot of time was used in understanding the main article because of its interdisciplinary character; covering biology, biochemistry, physics and of course mathematics. Unfortunately we could not exchange views with the authors to verify our ideas, clarify possible misunderstandings from our side or possible errors from their in the article. We hope that this will be done in near future, after the completion of this bachelor project and the writing of this thesis.Show less
