This study makes use of a quantitative research model based on a distributed survey on police violence (N = 122). The survey was distributed in the Netherlands and therefore this study will mainly look into the public attitude to police in the Dutch context. Attitude to violence will be set in a more general context. Furthermore, a comparison was made to analyse which of the two predictors that were analysed would have a stronger relationship with the public attitude to police violence. The covariates ethnicity and nationality are present as a possible explanation for the results found in this study, as both of them are found to potentially impact attitudes to police and attitudes to police violence (Bryant-Davis et al., 2017; Dukes & Kahn, 2017). Analysis was done using simple linear regression models and a comparison of results. It was found that the public attitude to violence has a negligible positive relationship with the public attitude to police violence. A moderately strong relationship was found between public attitude to the police and public attitude to police violence.Show less

This paper researches people's beliefs on the disproportionality of non-white ethnic groups in police violence cases. . It was then examined whether this has an impact on how they view police violence in general. A survey was created and spread to gather the required variables for the analysis (N=122) This was then analyzed using a correlation and a regression analysis. After the analyses were done, it was concluded that one of the three variables gave a significant result: people who feel like white ethnic groups are less likely to come into physical contact with the police tend to also view police violence, in general, more negatively. The other two independent variables regarding estimating the percentage of non-whites in police violence cases and the overrepresentation of non-white ethnic groups did not yield significant results.Show less

It explores the existing literature about police violence, and the existing public perceptions towards these acts. It mentions how there is a lack of literature talking about any other potential reasons, aside from racism, as a cause for police violence. There are many articles and studies exploring racially motivated acts of excessive police violence and the negative public views towards this, but there is almost no literature exploring external factors as a cause of this violence. This paper collected data through a survey seeking to ask the participants how they feel about police violence. Through these questions, the paper sought to see if people would be more accepting of police violence if it were to be caused by external factors. The analysis found that there was a moderately positive relationship between the acceptance towards excessive police violence by the public, and external factors having an influence on an officer’s actions. This shows that when people knew a situation was caused by external factors outside of the officer’s control, they were more willing to accept these acts. This paper then discusses what further research could be done on this topic.Show less

In this study, a survey was conducted in order to determine whether the perceived ethnicity of a victim of police violence has an effect on the acceptance of police violence by the general public. After analysing the data that was obtained from the said survey, by means of a spearman’s correlation, a one-way ANOVA, and binary logistics regression analysis, the conclusion can be reached that the ethnicity of the victim matters strongly in the acceptance of police violence by the general public far more so than the perceived prevalence of violence against ethnic minorities or the ethnicity of the member of the public themselves. What this means for practitioners is that organisational biases, in particular, need to be tackled in order to alleviate situations like this from happening.Show less

There are processes that influence the way we perceive different events. One of these processes within people in society is empathy. What will be explored in this paper is the influence of empathy on the severity of punishment. The following research question is going to be leading this research paper: How does empathy in men and women affect the severity of punishment given to an adolescent delinquent? The data to research this was collected through a survey with a total of 111 participants. This data resulted in the following answer of the research question. Empathy in men and women is not a good predictor of the severity of punishment that is given. What was found is that women score higher on a self-reporting questionnaire on empathy than males and that males give a higher punishment than women.Show less

It is expected that individuals experiencing increasing economic insecurity will likely have a lower risk perception of the virus. Caused by shifting priorities, resulting in a tradeoff between heath and economic security. Using an existing dataset created by cross-sectional surveying at the beginning of the pandemic, the hypotheses have been tested by using multiple linear regressions for the impact of economic insecurity on the perceived severity and vulnerability. This resulted in mixed evidence for the hypotheses, which led to the rejection of the alternative hypotheses. It was proved that overall economic insecurity does not have a (great) influence on risk perception. Due to the early stage of the pandemic, overall risk perception was high and economic insecurity low in the Netherlands, resulting in negligible results. It can be argued that at the beginning of the pandemic, individuals feared both economic and health consequences without making a trade-off. Future research, examining the same concepts later, may be capable of conferring impactful results, which could deliver valuable insights to help mitigate the global health and economic crises caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.Show less

Using a data-set provided by the PsyCorona Project, this paper seeks to find out how grievances of any kind may increase political distrust, and what the implication are for Dutch citizens’ compliance to corona measures. Using a bivariate Spearman’s correlation analysis, this research has tried to prove that both financial and social grievances have an impact on an individual Dutch citizen that increases their feelings of political distrust. The paper then makes a case for these grievances, although not directly related to COVID-19 measures, still indirectly affecting Dutch citizens’ judgements of those measures, due to the ‘non self-disconfirming’ nature of political distrust. Finally, the paper makes a case for these finding supporting the need for future research into how to avoid the grievances, as well as research into how to effectively engage with Dutch citizens who are already distrustful of their government.Show less
