This paper aims to add on existing knowledge by means of an thematic analysis of three autobiographies written by former members of Islamic extremist organizations. By applying a theoretical lens of Social Identity Theory, this research suggests that childhood identities emerge and change overtime as result of the rejection of a former identity or when identities function as either a protective mechanism or sense of certainty.Show less
