Translators have to decide whether or not to maintain modal assertions. The problem that arises when modality is not maintained is that the truth value of the assertion is altered; the translated assertion may then have a different meaning than the original. In this thesis, translation universals and translation procedures are discussed as well. The universals and procedures serve as the theoretical background on which the analysis is based.Show less

The gender relations in the play are complex: its title, referring to the taming of Kate by her husband-to-be Petruchio, already suggests that women are going to be put down as the inferior sex. However, it is not as simple as that. Throughout the play, the question remains of whether Petruchio actually does tame Katherine. If he does, moreover, it is worth examining the precise meaning of this ‘taming’, and the ‘taming’ methods which Petruchio employs. In addition, the meaning of the play depends to a significant extent on the staging decisions made by the director. For example, different stagings may invite different responses to the wager, in the closing scene, on who has the most obedient wife. All of this has caused scholars and directors alike to interpret this play in very different ways, attributing widely divergent labels to it, ranging from ‘patriarchal’ or even ‘misogynistic’, to ‘satirical’ and ‘pre-feminist’. I have studied commentaries by scholars with interpretations on both ends of the spectrum to identify the foundation for their particular analyses. I also offer a close-reading of the play, focusing especially on those scenes which have drawn attention with regard to gender relations. Thus I shed light on how the play allows for such different readings. In chapter 2, I have applied this knowledge to a recent Globe production of the Taming of the Shrew, directed by Toby Frow. There I examine how this staging interprets the questions surrounding gender hierarchy that are so central to The Shrew.Show less

The telescope consists of photomultiplier tubes which record the position and time stamps of Cherenkov light created by charged particles form e.g. neutrino interactions. This investigation is done to find neutrino sources in the cosmos which could lead to a better understanding of active galactic nuclei, supernova remnants, micro-quasars and gammaray bursts. We used the data of a prototype where most of the signals stem from muons created in atmospheric interactions of cosmic rays. In the first part the properties of the detected signals are being investigated and we look for a lower limit to have a noise free signal when looking for Cherenkov light created by charged particles between multiple digital optical modules. The last part of this project is devoted to calibrating the observed data with the simulated data so that in future experiments it could be seen at which time a particle is detected with nanosecond precision and thus with an angular precision of a tenth of a degree the direction and path of particles could be constructed.Show less

It is argued that the studies on the Dutch maritime empire in Asia have hitherto neglected the theme of private trade. In order to understand the decline of the VOC vis-à-vis the English EIC, it is crucial to have a better understanding of the Dutch private trade.Show less

They sing, dance, act and appear in magazines. Their pictures are sold in specialized shops and they sell several thousand copies per single. But in Europe and America such idols don’t exist. What is it that makes these idols so popular in Japan, while they are not popular in Europe and America? What is important for a Japanese idol to become popular? I will look at three different aspects: looks, talent and personality. The general conclusion is that talent is more important for Japanese idols than looks and personalityShow less

The thesis is divided as follows. First, a theoretical framework regarding the sound-meaning correlations of Japanese mimetics is provided. This is followed by the analysis, which consists of two parts. In the first part, the results of the quantitative analysis of Japanese mimetics and their translation methods are presented. The results show that giongo are often translated into equivalent sounds by using existing mimetics. Gitaigo and gijōgo, on the other hand, are usually translated into words that can be divided into multiple translation methods (hybrids). In the second part, the qualitative analysis investigates whether the translations of the Japanese mimetics found in the English edition of the manga Azumanga Daiō are true to their original meaning. That is, whether they sufficiently convey the established sound-meaning correlations of their Japanese counterparts. The results show that in this manga, this is not always sufficiently done. Thus, the translations run the risk of missing nuances, resulting in loss or undertranslation.Show less

Morality is a heterogeneously diverse set of codes and norms that derives from multiple sources, such as Confucian and Buddhism. Looking at Buddhism, this already started spreading towards China as early as the Han dynasty, and has over time gained a firm foothold in the Chinese culture and literature. This thesis will focus on the function of Buddhism in one of the fundamental works in the genre of the vernacular story: the Sanyan 三言,three collections of each forty stories written by the Ming dynasty writer Feng Menglong 馮夢龍. This thesis will research the function of one particular element connected to morality: karmic retribution. It will argue that because the Late Ming was a political unstable period in which many people were seeking moral guidance to create stability for themselves, Feng Menglong mostly used karmic retribution in a common recognizable setting for his readers to promote morality.Show less

By constructing a Jungian analytic framework, archetypal elements in film can be found and explained. Fei Mu's 'Spring in a Small Town' (1948) and Alan Mak and Andrew Lau's 'Infernal Affairs' (2005) both yield ample material when subjected to a Jungian analysis. Selectivity, subjectivity and the impossibility of falsification remain problematic when analyzing films for symbols.Show less

Much like contemporary erotic works like the sixteenth century “Jin Ping Mei” and seventeenth century “The Embroidered Couch”, the theme of the erotic novel revolves around a libertine who fully indulges himself in sexual pleasures and is, through the intricacies of karmic retribution (which in the Chinese narrative is known as baoying), eventually punished for it. I will try to determine the influence of baoying on narrative structure and behavior adjustment of characters within Rou Putuan. On a structural level I will, drawing on works of van Dijk and Margolin, examine how to recognize occurrences of the unexpected disruption of coherence within the event structure of the narrative, intuitively called ‘coincidence’. Through the analysis of three key events, I will attempt to determine whether or not this occurrence of ‘coincidence’ can be made rational by supplying a retribution structure coordinating the story. The final purpose of this thesis is to determine how Li Yu’s evokes the retributive device of baoying on the narrative of Rou Putuan. My argument refutes the idea that the author uses retribution to convene any moral message, but that it’s merely the result of Li Yu’s interesting relationship with convention. I will lay bare this relationship by supplying a small biography and emphasizing the interrelation between his own aesthetic ideas and his intended audience.Show less

How can we interpret that we see at the same time 'socializing' and 'challenging' actions? The paper examines first to what extent socialization theory can help to explain China's increasing role in the governance of the IFIs. Next is an analysis from different perspectives if there is evidence that China is 'challenging' the IFIs. The final section will illustrate that China is taking an alternative route to exerting its influence on the IFIs, and that there are other theses about engagement and interaction that current International Relations Theory is not capable of explaining. This analysis of the nature of China's influence on the governance of the international financial institutions aims to give us an insight into what kind of member of the international community China aspires to be.Show less

A magnetic non-collinearity at the SF interface is essential for this conversion. This can be achieved in systems where two ferromagnets have a misaligned magnetization with respect to each other. The optimal system for triplet generation is then investigated with the help of micromagnetic simulations. Out of the various systems studied, a disk geometry consisting of nickel and cobalt layers proved to be the most promising. This system was fabricated and subsequently measured. Although the existence of triplet correlations are yet to be verified, a fully proximized junction was observed. In addition, an attempt is made to realise current induced magnetization switching by utilising 100% spin-polarized current from half-metallic CrO2. We expect the required current density to be significantly reduced, thus minimizing the energy dissipation, which is currently the greatest obstacle in fabricating fully functional spintronic devices.Show less
