Through a critical analysis of the translations and...Show moreThis thesis researches a Sanskrit law code called the Manusmrti or Manava Dharmasastra, translated in English as "The Laws of Manu". Through a critical analysis of the translations and interpretations of Indologists Wendy Doniger and Patrick Olivelle, it will be argued that the current interpretations of the Manusmrti are starkly Western and prove a continuation of a discourse initiated in British colonial India. This discourse entails a framework of Western law and law code. The Manusmrti, however, is concerned with the Sanskrit concept of "dharma". With the help of the translation theories of Walter Benjamin and Jacques Derrida it will be argued that "dharma" is a concept very distinct from the Western "law" and proves untranslatable. Furthermore, this thesis proposes a reading for the Manusmrti different from the current Western framework of law. The proposed new interpretation is based upon the concept of "aphorism" as described by Friedrich Nietzsche. To elucidate the differences in philosophy between the current interpretations and the interpretation proposed in this thesis, the theories of Gilles Deleuze and Benedictus Spinoza will be deployed. Their ideas will help to show that the proposed interpretation will ultimately entail another, more productive world-view for the Manusmrti and the conceptualisation of its key term "dharma".Show less

Binnen de Nationale Politie vraagt men zich af of een taalwetenschappelijke benadering een bijdrage zou kunnen leveren aan de analyse en de inschatting van de grote hoeveelheden dreigtweets die er tegenwoordig dagelijks geuit worden. In dit onderzoek beschouw ik het dreigement als taalhandeling die je kan versterken of verzwakken middels intensiveerders en hedges. Een vergelijkende corpusstudie laat zien dat relatief sterke dreigtweets gekenmerkt worden door grote aantallen intensiveerders terwijl relatief zwakke dreigtweets doorgaans meer hedges bevatten. Deze verbanden tussen de aantallen intensiveerders en hedges en de dreigingswaarde, zou de basis kunnen vormen voor verdere automatisering. Literatuurstudie omtrent sentimentsanalyse laat zien dat er reeds grote stappen gezet worden bij het computationeel onderzoeken van sentiment en sentimentssterkte in teksten. Het grootste struikelblok binnen de literatuur dat ook voor de inschatting van dreigtweets relevant is, is dat de rol van de context voor een juiste inschatting van sentiment en sterkte in een geautomatiseerd systeem lastig te verwerken is.Show less

Deze scriptie gaat over ideeën en sociale verhoudingen en over...Show moreIn deze scriptie is de redactie van het wetenschappelijk tijdschrift van de Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij (SDAP) onderzocht. Deze scriptie gaat over ideeën en sociale verhoudingen en over de wisselwerking daartussen. De redactie van De Socialistische Gids is bestudeerd aan de hand van het zelfbedachte concept intellectuele performance met als doel om in kaart te brengen wat wetenschap voor verschillende leden van de sociaaldemocratische partij betekende. Eind december 1915 werd De Socialistische Gids als ‘nieuwjaarsgeschenk’ verwelkomd in de partij. Het was een ‘teeken, dat de energie bij ons niet is gedood; dat wij nog vertrouwen in de toekomst hebben; dat wij rustig voortwerken aan onze ontwikkeling’, schreef de partijkrant Het Volk. Kennelijk waren de verwachtingen van de wetenschap hooggespannen. In deze scriptie zijn deze verwachtingen in kaart gebracht. Daarbij was de vraag leidend wat intellectuelen en wetenschappers verwachtten van wetenschap en het wetenschappelijk tijdschrift voor zichzelf en voor de SDAP en wat de partijtop verwachtte van de wetenschapsbeoefening in de partij. Voor de redactie-secretaris en criminoloog Willem Bonger (1876-1940) gold de praktische wetenschap als de motor van de sociale vooruitgang. Hij wilde wetenschappen zoals natuurkunde, wiskunde, biologie en psychologie beoefenen in de SDAP met als doel om de socialistische maatschappij te maken. Zowel zijn politieke als academische werk getuigt van een sterk geloof in de maakbaarheid van de maatschappij. Deze maakbaarheidsgedachte zou een generatie jongere partij-intellectuelen beïnvloeden en na de Tweede Wereldoorlog doorwerken in de Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA). Binnen de redactie riep Bongers ambitie om de socialistische maatschappij letterlijk te maken met behulp van wetenschap echter de nodige weerstand op. Redactielid en partijleider Pieter Jelles Troelstra (1860-1930) vond wetenschapsbeoefening in de partij om heel andere redenen belangrijk. Hij gebruikte wetenschap als troef die op politiek opportune momenten gespeeld kon worden ten bate van zijn machtspositie. Socioloog Rudolf Kuyper (1874-1934) zag wetenschapsbeoefening als manier om een verstarring van het geestesleven van de partij te voorkomen. Hij zag De Socialistische Gids als ideologisch vernieuwingsinstrument. Deze verschillende opvattingen van wat wetenschap betekende voor de SDAP vormden het praktische redactiewerk. Uit deze scriptie blijkt dat politieke intellectuelen en wetenschappers meer waren dan opperpriesters van Marx. Zij vormden de voorhoede van het socialisme en droegen op fundamentele wijze bij aan de ontwikkeling van het socialisme. Als belangrijkste conclusie van deze scriptie is vastgesteld dat de betekenis van wetenschap veranderde in de SDAP in de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw. Wetenschap werd beoefend met het doel om in de maatschappij in te grijpen. Wetenschap werd praktischer en pragmatischer ingezet dan voorheen. De Socialistische Gids laat de geboorte van het maakbaarheidsdenken en de technocratie zien. Het maakbaarheidsdenken van Bonger vormt een brug tussen het vroege marxisme van de SDAP en de naoorlogse sociaaldemocratische politiek.Show less

Hij had in zijn leven een opmerkelijke ontwikkeling doorgemaakt van varkensslager tot een van de eerste socialisten in de Kamer. In dit onderzoek wordt nagegaan wat zijn socialisme inhield en hoe hij deze combineerde met de parlementaire cultuur van zijn tijd. Wij zullen Van der Zwaag leren kennen als een man van de praktijk, die de maatschappij van onderop probeerde te verbeteren. Echter, in de Kamer bleek hij hiertoe veel minder in staat te zijn dan in Friesland, waar hij voorheen actief was. Dit had voornamelijk te maken met zijn positie in de Kamer als een Vrije Socialist zonder partij, en de implicaties ervan in een partijendemocratie.Show less

Elle comprend le Quartier France, première capitale coloniale française en Côte d’Ivoire, et un village de l’ethnie N’zima. Ce mémoire s’intéresse à la question de l’appropriation symbolique du Quartier France par les habitants de la ville historique. Une recherche qualitative a été menée à travers une méthodologie qui combine entretiens d’experts avec des acteurs clés, entretiens semi-directifs avec les habitants et observations directes et indirectes sur le terrain. Elle met en exergue l’existence d’une appropriation symbolique dont les modalités diffèrent selon deux groupes majeurs: les allogènes et N’zima "déracinés" du Quartier France qui développent un marquage trace de l’espace, et les autochtones du village N’zima qui expriment à la fois un marquage trace et un marquage présence matérialisé par la célébration de la fête de l’Abissa.Show less

Aan...Show moreWat voor soort relatie hadden de Nederlanders, met de Compagnie in het bijzonder, met de machtige confederatie Ashanti in het binnenland van de Goudkust? Dat is de hoofdvraag van dit onderzoek. Aan de hand van uitgebreid literatuur- en archiefonderzoek zal worden gepoogd een label te plakken op deze relatie. De focus zal daarbij liggen op de periode 1750-1772; een tijdvak van veel oorlogen in het binnenland, met blokkades van de handelswegen tot gevolgen. De mogelijke labels zijn geformuleerd op basis van politicologische concepten van relaties tussen verschillende volken of staten. Harvey Feinberg, historicus op het gebied van Afrika, heeft deze concepten eerder gebruikt om de relatie tussen de Nederlanders op de Goudkust en de inwoners van Elmina te kunnen duiden. Deze concepten blijken echter ook bruikbaar om de relatie tussen de Nederlanders en Ashanti te verklaren. Op basis van het descriptieve en analytische hoofdstuk kan worden vastgesteld dat hier sprake was van het politicologische concept dependent-independent, hoewel zo’n label nooit helemaal sluitend kan zijn. In his examination of Sappho's letter Poliziano handles many different subjects: (correct) commentary practice, the rhetorical analysis of the effects of poetry, the history and poetry of Sappho, and the theory of the Greek rhetoricians Demetrius and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. Each time an innovative approach and constructive use of tradition define his method. His notes functioned as a medium for advancing classical scholarship, and especially the study of Greek literature.Show less

Objective: To examine (a) the effect of maternal reflective functioning (RF) on precursors of theory of mind (ToM) and executive functioning (EF) in 20-month-old children, (b) the relation between...Show moreObjective: To examine (a) the effect of maternal reflective functioning (RF) on precursors of theory of mind (ToM) and executive functioning (EF) in 20-month-old children, (b) the relation between ToM and EF at 20 months, and (c) the effectiveness of an early intervention program aimed, among others, at improving maternal RF. Method: The sample consisted of 118 mother-child dyads. Maternal RF was assessed during pregnancy using the Pregnancy Interview-Revised and at 20 months using the Parent Development Interview. At 20 months children’s ToM understanding was examined using a simple visual perspective (VP) taking task, a discrepant desires (DD) task and an imitation task; EF performance was assessed using a delay task (inhibition) and a working memory (WM) task called ‘hide the pots’. The Child Behavior Checklist was conducted to assess children’s problem behavior. Results: Children of mothers low on maternal RF, especially child-related RF, showed significantly worse VP-taking capacities compared with children of mothers average/high on RF. A significant moderating effect of children’s problem behavior was present; children with high attention problems or a high withdrawn level were more affected by their mothers’ low RF capacities. No unequivocal and significant effects of maternal RF on DD, imitation and EF performance were found. In addition, only a significant correlation between DD and WM performance was present. The effectiveness of the early intervention program regarding improving RF could not be confirmed. Conclusions: Early intervention programs should focus on improving child-related aspects of maternal RF of mothers at risk for being low on RF, especially when their children show problem behavior. Future research should reexamine both the effect of maternal RF on ToM and EF, and the relationship between ToM and EF at e.g. 2.5 years.Show less

The Matrix Language Framework (MLF – Myers-Scotton, 1993) suggests that the matrix language will provide the grammatical frame and that the embedded language will supply some content elements. The matrix language will thus determine the word order in a code-switched determiner phrase. In the case of Dutch-Papiamento intra-sentential code-switching, the MLF will predict an [adjective-noun] order when the matrix language is Dutch, and the MLF will predict a [noun-adjective] order when the matrix language is Papiamento. However, the MLF does not make a prediction about the origin of the adjective or the noun. Thus, when the matrix language is Dutch, both combinations of [Dutch adjective-Papiamento noun] and [Papiamento adjective-Dutch noun] would be possible according to the MLF. The same principle applies for Papiamento as the matrix language, both language combinations [Papiamento noun-Dutch adjective] and [Dutch noun-Papiamento adjective] would be possible according to the MLF. The aim of the present study is to test the predictions of the MLF in Dutch-Papiamento code-switching production. The four code-switching patterns mentioned above were used as conditions that match the predictions of the MLF (“MLF+ conditions”). Another four conditions were created by reversing the order of the adjective and the noun in both matrix language paradigms, to create a violation of the predictions of the MLF (“MLF- conditions”). A total of eight conditions were used in this study. The MLF predictions were tested by using an advanced psycholinguistic method, namely electro-encephalography (EEG). The integration of a psycholinguistic method in a code-switching experiment is an innovative way of testing the predictions of a theoretical model. In this study, an EEG signal was recorded while Dutch-Papiamento bilingual speakers conducted a modified picture naming task. The conditions were analysed by looking at naming latencies and by looking at the part of the EEG signal following target presentation. Based on results of previous picture naming tasks (Christoffels, Firk & Schiller, 2007; Rodriguez-Fornells, Van Der Lugt, Rotte, Britti, Heinze & Münte, 2005; Misra, Guo, Bobb & Kroll, 2012), I expected slower naming latencies and a more negative waveform for the conditions that violate the predictions of the MLF. The expected slower naming latencies were observed in two MLF- conditions: Papiamento adjective followed by a Dutch noun (Papiamento matrix language) and Papiamento noun followed by a Dutch adjective (Dutch matrix language). The expected negative waveform was observed in only one MLF- condition: Papiamento adjective followed by a Dutch noun (Papiamento matrix language). Furthermore, a P300 (with an early peak in the frontal/central area and a later peak in the occipital area) and a late positive component seem to be elicited in code-switching production. The amplitude of the P300 peak was higher in the conditions that contain a violation of the MLF, which could be explained by the higher complexity of the MLF- conditions. The occurrence of the P300 could be explained in terms of the context-updating theory (Donchin, 1981; Donchin & Coles, 1988) or the neural inhibition theory (Polich, 2007). On the whole, the results do not provide conclusive support for the predictions of the MLF.Show less

The assumption that in songbirds generally only males produce learned vocalizations whereas in humans both sexes do was, on the other hand, considered to be an important difference. A recent study, however, demonstrated that this assumption probably reflects a geographical research bias towards temperate zones. Most species found in this region belong to the most recently evolved group of songbirds, the Passerida, in which female song is uncommon. The study shows that female song is widespread across the more basal, non-Passerida, groups. Only few studies so far have investigated how different or similar song produced by male and female birds in non-Passerida species is. To compare sex differences across many different species, one needs a song analysis method that is independent of singing style. The aim of this thesis was to devise such a method based in part on sex differences that have previously been reported in the literature. To test this method, it was used to investigate sex differences in the song of six non-Passerida songbird species. This song analysis showed that the method could indeed be used to analyze sex differences in birds with different singing styles, and sex differences in some parameters, such as spectral similarity and element versatility, were found. In future studies, this method can thus be used to investigate sex differences in more species from different phylogenetic groups which can help better understand the selection pressures that led to the sexual dimorphism in song that can currently be observed in Passerida songbirds. This insight can then be used to generate hypotheses about the evolution of sex differences in the learned vocalizations of other vocal learning species, such as humans.Show less

Using the theories of Brian McHale and Linda Hutcheon, the thesis analyzes three American haunting house novels: Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House," King's "The Shining," and Danielewski's "House of Leaves." Especially the notions of history, knowledge, and science are of relevance in this context. As is claimed, the haunting house does away with the idea that knowledge about the house and its past is empowering, since the supernatural events are not caused by a gruesome crime of the past.Show less

First, it contains an overview of existing scholarship on...Show moreInquiry into the formal and functional development of the Latin nominal suffix -ēla, including a collection of all relevant literary forms. First, it contains an overview of existing scholarship on -ēla. Secondly, a descriptive account is given of -ēla's synchronic features, most notably its distribution throughout Latinity, its various morphological bases and its semantics. Thirdly, an explanation is sought for three distinct unsolved problems. For the first, -ēla's spelling alternation with -ella, a specific scenario entailing confusion with the the diminutive suffix -ellus is defended. Regarding the question whether the suffix is originally deverbal or denominal, an original deverbal character for -ēla is defended. Lastly, two distinct origins for -ēla are proposed. On the one hand, an inner-Latin source is put forward, establishing a connection between -ēla and the pre-Latin suffix *-slo-/-sla-. On the other hand, comparison with the Greek suffix -ωλή allows for the consideration of PIE origins for -ēla.Show less
