With script analysis...Show moreThis thesis explores how a portable DNA lab (Bento Lab) can affect social ties between humans and objects. How do we perceive DNA research outside of the institutional realm? With script analysis as the research method, I study the inscribed, subscribed and exhibited capacities of the Bento Lab and how each of these contexts affects the social. The social being the people and objects that are gathered in the momentum in which DNA research is used, or discussed. Throughout the study, it becomes clear that one object can have a large impact on how we, as humans, perceive DNA research and all of its ethical implications.Show less

Om deze vraag te...Show moreIn deze scriptie wordt onderzocht op wat voor manier en vanuit welke overwegingen wij beelden gegeneerd door systemen op basis van kunstmatige intelligentie kunst noemen. Om deze vraag te beantwoorden wordt eerst het begrip kunstmatige intelligentie (kunst) en worden hedendaagse toepassingen van kunstmatige intelligentie in de beeldende kunst uiteengezet. Vervolgens worden de eigenschappen van kunst, creativiteit en artistieke creativiteit onderzocht. In hoofdstuk vier zal het theoretische kader van de concepten kunst, kunstenaarschap en creativiteit zoals uiteengezet in hoofdstuk drie besproken worden in relatie tot de generatieve systemen op basis van kunstmatige intelligentie.Show less

This is done through considerations of the...Show moreThis thesis explores the insights that the contemporary practice of neuro art can add to knowledge that is held over the construction of consciousness. This is done through considerations of the work of Annie Cattrell and Helen Chadwick. In order to identify the added value of art, first an analysis is made of the current neuroscientific stance and its influence in society. Secondly, the thesis minutely demarcates the limits of the neuroscientific method. Here it is laid bare why its objective nature is inherently inadequate for a full understanding of consciousness, that is subjective per definition. The third chapter offers a concise introduction to neuro art. In the subsequent two chapters, the confrontation with the two artworks takes place. Through a reflection on how the artists employ their artistic means to conduct their research on the subject, insights on the construction of consciousness are deduced. The thesis is ended with a reflection on the position of art regarding science is present-day society. Art that engages itself with science enriches the ideas about the construction of consciousness.Show less
The present environmental crisis has put the public war between current right-wing authoritarian governs and whoever in the world is concerned about the environment in the international spotlight....Show moreThe present environmental crisis has put the public war between current right-wing authoritarian governs and whoever in the world is concerned about the environment in the international spotlight. Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord, on June 1, 2017 and the recent refusal of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro to stop the exploitation of Amazon illustrate the emergence of a situation in which the notions of territory and nation-state no longer sustain the reality of our shared planet. The more climate change, global warming and the environmental degradation haunt the Earth’s inhabitants, the more it seems that we break apart the world as if boundaries of exclusion could prevent what is inside from perishing. In this thesis, I argue that, in the core of this issue, dwell precisely our ‘notions’ and ‘concepts’—enclosed in the huge monolith of Western modern thinking. To confront the planetary crisis, one needs a new strategy to access these problems—that would not consist in simply applying a dialectical method of discussion, but instead deploying a multidimensional approach, capable of penetrating that Western bloc from all sides. By taking on the notion of networks—whether informatic, political and biological—I critically analyse this concept and introduce the framework of the ‘swarm’ that I used in my own artistic practice as a way to allow a multiplicity of viewpoints. The art project Game of Swarms, which explores mainly the fact that the individuals of swarms work together without a locus of control, provokes the audience to rethink our current political structures and use the narrative of the game to imagine new forms of making politics and a new way to think our relation to the world. The biological self-organised model of swarms comes as a tool to create new narratives to face today’s planetary crisis and foster a more sustainable way of thinking.Show less

Vervolgens wordt er gekeken naar de sociale acceptatie van deze werken binnen de kunstwereld en bij de toeschouwer om te zien of de positie van deze werken is veranderd. Ook wordt de grens tussen kunst en pornografie besproken om te zien wat de status van deze werken is als men kijkt naar de definiëring rondom pornografie.Show less

Up until now, the phenomenon was characterized as either a clever marketing strategy or a substantial ideology-critical instrument. In this thesis, both perspectives are highlighted in order to clarify the notion of contemporary transhistorical curating and to extend and enrich the existing academic discourse on this notion. This thesis can be seen as a first attempt to distinguish the ways in which the concept is used and to make explicit what needs the concept meets.Show less
Met de analyse in deze scriptie heb ik een antwoord geformuleerd op de onderzoekvraag, namelijk of het (neo-) platonisme een verklaring kan bieden voor de zon en hel-afbeeldingen in het Laatste...Show moreMet de analyse in deze scriptie heb ik een antwoord geformuleerd op de onderzoekvraag, namelijk of het (neo-) platonisme een verklaring kan bieden voor de zon en hel-afbeeldingen in het Laatste Oordeel van Michelangelo. Daarbij past uiteraard wel de kanttekening dat het (neo-) platonisme een perspectief voor interpreteren is en er vele andere perspectieven mogelijk zijn. Bekend is namelijk dat voor sommige onderdelen van het Laatste Oordeel de Goddelijke Komedie van Dante nauwgezet heeft gevolgd. Uit hoofdstuk 4 bleek dat de ziel een ‘verbindend element’ is tussen de zon en de hel. Dit is ook in het Laatste Oordeel terug te zien. Onder andere met behulp van een – niet willekeurige - diagonale lijn zijn verschillende onderdelen te ‘verklaren’ met als centrale zijnssubstantie de ziel. De ziel is voor Ficino als middelste zijnssubstantie de verbindende schakel tussen de stoffelijke en de metafysische wereld. Michelangelo heeft zijn zelfportret halverwege de lijn afgebeeld. De lijn kan ook als symbool worden gezien als de verbinding tussen de opgaande gang van de platonische beschouwing richting God via contemplatie en de neerwaartse gang door de aantrekking van de zintuigelijk genot. Daarnaast is ook de circulaire gedachte van Ficino te herkennen. De (neo-)platonische zon-symboliek lijkt prominent ‘aanwezig’ te zijn in het Laatste Oordeel. Het aureool achter Christus kan geïnterpreteerd worden als een platonische verwijzing naar het hoogste of God. De zon als metafoor voor God maakt ook duidelijk dat God door zintuigen slechts indirect kan worden waargenomen. De plaatsing van de zon achter Christus kan mogelijk ook geïnterpreteerd worden aan de hand van het heliocentrische wereldbeeld van Copernicus. Vlak voor de start van het schilderen van het fresco was de theorie bekend bij de opdrachtgever. De zon als middelpunt relateert aan de centrale plaats van God. Vandaaruit gaan de lichtstralen die de zichtbare wereld verlichten en zichtbaar maken. De afbeelding van de hel, en dan met name de grot middenonder, blijft in de literatuur vragen oproepen. De grot als afbeelding als hellemond of Voorgeborchte lijkt niet voor de hand te liggen. Verschillende visuele elementen zijn echter wel te herkennen op basis van Plato’s beschrijving van Er van de dodenwereld. Zo zijn er spleten in de aarde, rechters en demonen die misdadigers wegslepen aan te wijzen. Op basis hiervan zou de grot als plaats van boetedoening, oftewel Vagevuur, te interpreteren zijn. En zeker ook Ficino legt met name nadruk op de zuiverende gang door de aarde en de rechters die zich in de lucht bevinden. Vele elementen van het gedachtengoed van Plato en Ficino ten aanzien van de hel en het Vagevuur zijn daarmee goed te herkennen in de onderste helft van het Laatste Oordeel. Op basis hiervan is naar ik meen met goede redenen te concluderen dat de grot middenonder het Vagevuur representeert.Show less

In the age of the Anthropocene, we are faced with unprecedented challenges; we have realized we are exploiting the Earth’s resources, society is becoming more complex, and urbanization is...Show moreIn the age of the Anthropocene, we are faced with unprecedented challenges; we have realized we are exploiting the Earth’s resources, society is becoming more complex, and urbanization is increasing at a rate never before witnessed. Understanding these challenges is loaded with uncertainty, both in defining the problems and how humanity should respond. One response is that of urban sustainability. Primarily addressed from the perspective of urban planning, urban sustainability focuses on infrastructural and technological solutions. This thesis posits that questions of sustainability in cities however cannot be disconnected from the cultural dimension. Using a comparative case study of two festivals – Burning Man and DGTL Amsterdam – the relationship between humans and their surroundings is explored. The analysis of the festivals focuses on the manifestation of ‘sustainability’ as a set of values through the artworks presented on the festival terrain and the framing of the festival experience. Political ecology theories are used as tools to explore the relationship between humans and their environment. Urban experimentation acts as a theoretical lens to understand the festival as a ‘microcosm’, a breeding ground for creativity and culture, and likening it to the city. The thesis presents a reading of urban festivals that outlines how culture can be introduced to urban sustainability research in response to questions to test political ecology in practice. In doing so, the thesis brings together the once disparate categories of human and nature.Show less

By exploring the...Show moreThis thesis explores the role and influence of artificial intelligence in our contemporary society through the inter-subjective and embodied experience of new media art. By exploring the intersecting lines between art, technology, cognition and society, it discusses the potential in artistic practices involving intelligent technologies, to reframe the way in which we engage with Artificial Intelligence. This research benefits from an interdisciplinary approach that reaches through and beyond the field of contemporary art to challenge the mainstream discussion on the future of A.I. and the ethics of its applications. In order to do so, this thesis begins by establishing an understanding of embodiment in light of postcognitive approaches that move away from the dualism of mind and matter and negate representationalist paradigms of perception. This forms the basis from which to explore the particular subjectivities and material encounters in the practice and experience of new media art that engages with intelligent technologies. This thesis uses specific case studies involving creative applications of A.I. in contemporary art to reveal our interaction and co-existence with intelligent technologies as intricate and uniquely entangled. With the support of scientific, philosophical and aesthetic theories, it ultimately argues that such applications of A.I. in artistic practice provide a unique perspective for a transformative encounter with regards to the self, to our performed reality and to our becoming in a posthumanist environment.Show less

We have created so many data in the last decades we are not able to process them all anymore, this is what is known as “Big Data.” And with this data boom it has also come the conviction that the...Show moreWe have created so many data in the last decades we are not able to process them all anymore, this is what is known as “Big Data.” And with this data boom it has also come the conviction that the more data we gather, the better insights we have. But, do wet? Can knowledge survive without philosophy's buttress? To facilitate making sense out of data we have invented techniques to understand them: to see patterns or correlations to gain new insights. And here is where data visualisation has come into play. Data visualisations are maps that help us navigate the data surge we live in. But should we take data visualisation as a proof of truth? If everything is data now, and these data are translated into a visualisation, we are distanced from “reality” by many levels of abstraction: from the given world to the database through the technological tool, from the database to the image through the software we need to create it. This poses two problems: we can just apprehend the world through technology and all we see is that which is quantifiable, translatable into a technological language. Do we as subjects have any agency in a world we cannot apprehend as it is? This thesis then departs from three hypothesis: Big Data has led to a deep epistemological problem precisely because of the unfettered data accumulation; a problem further intensified as a result of its frenzied visualisation; and this epistemological problem renders the subject powerless. Therefore, the question is: how can we call into question the all-pervasive data visualisation in order to re-empower the subject in the Information Age? To this end, I will first give a description of the main concepts this thesis is dealing with, I will then contend the hypothesis and, finally, I will propose an answer to the questions they lay and an example of action.Show less
