This study sought to investigate the relationship between attachment style and resilience in specifically the sexual minority population. As sexual minority individuals tend to experience more hardship and be more insecurely attached, this relationship may be different in this population, thereby making it worthwhile to investigate whether this relationship is different from that in the general population. Taking a dimensional approach with attachment style, Model of Self, Model of Other, and resilience of non-heterosexual participants aged 18 and up (N = 239) were measured by means of a survey. It was hypothesized that more positive scores on Model of Self and Model of Other would be associated with higher resilience scores. From a multiple regression analysis, it was concluded that the model itself (p < .001), Model of Self (beta = .36, p < .001), Model of Other (beta = -.13, p = .024), and the interaction between the two (beta = .19, p = .001) were statistically significant. A positive relationship was found between Model of Self and resilience, whereas Model of Other and resilience produced a negative relationship. The relationship between Model of Self and resilience fits in with literature, although the negative relationship between Model of Other and resilience seemingly contradicts literature. This contradiction may be explained using self-efficacy and self-care. Further research on Model of Other and self-efficacy and self-care may elucidate this paradoxical relationship.Show less

Therefore, this study will...Show moreIntroduction Mental health problems are a lot more prevalent in Sexual Minority Individuals (SMI; non-heterosexuals individuals) than in the general population. Therefore, this study will investigate how psychological well-being can be increased by looking at how Internalised Homonegativity (IH; negative feelings towards someone’s own non- heterosexuality) effects psychological well-being directly and indirectly with self- respect as mediator. Methods 345 respondents completed 12 questionnaires, 3 of which are focused on in the current study (the Internalised Homonegativity subscale of the LGBIS, the OHQ-SF (measuring psychological well-being), and The Self-respect measure). A multiple regression analysis and a mediation analysis were conducted. Results Internalised homonegativity was found to significantly predict psychological well- being. Other findings consisted of a significantly negative effect from internalised homonegativity on self-respect and a significantly positive effect from self-respect on psychological well-being. Discussion We found that IH negatively predicted psychological well-being. Additionally, we found that IH negatively effects self-respect and in turn, self-respect positively effects psychological well-being. Conclusion Reducing mental health problems in SMI can be achieved by decreasing IH to increases self-respect which in turn increases psychological well-being. Increased psychological well-being means decreased mental health problems in SMI.Show less

Internalized homonegativity (IH) and attachment style (AS) are connected, and secure AS and resilience...Show moreSexual minority individuals (SMI) are more susceptible to psychopathology than heterosexuals. Internalized homonegativity (IH) and attachment style (AS) are connected, and secure AS and resilience are positively correlated. IH was found to be a risk factor and an insecure AS is a risk factor for IH, whereas a secure AS would be a protective factor. The present study investigates whether the relationship between attachment style and resilience is moderated by internalized homonegativity in SMI. Data was collected via an online survey using self-report measures from SMI adults (n = 241) that measured the variables of AS, IH, and resilience. The following hypotheses were tested using multiple regression analyses: (H1) individuals with a positive self-model and positive other-model (overall secure attachment) in combination with low levels of internalized homonegativity predict resilience, (H2) the relationship between AS was moderated by IH. The results showed no statistically significant effect of IH and MOS in any model, meaning that (H1) is rejected. Furthermore, no interactions were significant, meaning no moderation effect, and therefore, (H2) is rejected. There were no changes in significance when Model 1, 2, and 4 were tested with and without outliers. However, there were significant changes when Model 3 was tested without outliers; from significant to nonsignificant. The author concludes that this is a good model of resilience but the low variance of the sample cannot show that the model was a good fit. Further research should focus on protective factors and their influence on psychological wellbeing in SMI populations.Show less
