Hierin onderzoekt hij de toetreding van psychiatrie...Show moreIn het jaar 1977 hield filosoof Michel Foucault zijn lezing "About the Concept of the 'Dangerous Individual' in 19th Century Legal Psychiatry". Hierin onderzoekt hij de toetreding van psychiatrie tot het recht, en de gevolgen daarvan voor de moderne rechtspraak. Om te kunnen bepalen of een dader toerekeningsvatbaar is, dient die te worden gekend en begrepen. Zo kan het zijn dat als een dader zwijgt, of op een andere manier onleesbaar is, de rechtsgang wordt gefrustreerd. Wat doet het recht met deze onleesbare daders? En hoe gaat film met die onleesbaarheid om? Deze scriptie onderzoekt het fenomeen van de onleesbare dader in relatie tot de zaak-Fabienne Kabou (2016) en de daarop gebaseerde fictiefilm Saint Omer (2022). Fabienne Kabou is schuldig aan infanticide, een bij uitstek "onverklaarbare" daad. Daarbij wordt zij bekritiseerd om haar "ambigue" en poëtische antwoorden. Om haar zaak en de artistieke verwerking ervan beter te begrijpen gebruik ik een aantal begrippen die een lans breken voor onleesbaarheid, waaronder het begrip "opaciteit" van Édouard Glissant. Ik schrijf daarbij over een vorm van rechtvaardigheid, die anders lijkt te zijn dan de juridische, en de vraag of film die kan bieden.Show less

It brings this affect in conversation with theories of metamodernism and postdigitality. It puts forth a sensibility called the postdigital, metamodern sensibility in which the poles of postmodern irony and cynicism and modern enthusiasm and naivety exist in a fluid dualism with eachother, as opposed to in the oscillation proposed by the metamodern school.Show less

David...Show moreEven though disabled characters in TV and film are more pervasive than the average consumer would think, many characters with disabilities are still depicted in a rather negative light. David Mitchell and Sharon Snyder have termed this "narrative prosthesis" to signify that disabled characters or often solely used as plot devices. I have decided to analyse the portrayal of Avatar: the Last Airbenders´ disabled characters to see whether they too are only used to further the narrative. Next to contextualising the series alongside the depiction of other characters in other enterntainment media and discussing several of the series' characters individually I put special emphasis on the character Toph as I claim that animation can aid in a positive representation of disabled characters.Show less

It examined and answered the following questions: How does the critical perspective of Afropessimism impact the experiences and identities of individuals of African descent in the Americas, specifically in the U.S. and Brazil? How does Afropessimism critique the effectiveness of the human rights framework in securing racial justice for individuals within the African diaspora? To examine the translatability of Afropessimism to a different cultural context other than that of the U.S., I researched whether this theoretical framework could also accurately explain the historical and contemporary experiences of Black individuals in Brazil. These questions aimed to evaluate the extent to which Afropessimism, departing from other racial theories, such as intersectionality, questions the efficacy of the human rights framework in transforming society and its social institutions, as a means of irrevocably achieving racial justice.Show less

Ik zal deze...Show moreHet nietsdoen heeft een lange geschiedenis in zowel film als literatuur. In deze scriptie zal ik mij richten op twee onproductieve figuren in het bijzonder: de slacker en de flaneur. Ik zal deze figuren met elkaar vergelijken en hierbij uitweiden over hoe de flaneur van het einde van de 19e eeuw en het begin van de 20e eeuw zich verhoudt tot de slacker van het einde van de 20e eeuw en het begin van de 21e eeuw in film en literatuur. Is de slacker simpelweg een moderne flaneur of zijn de twee figuren en de werken waartoe zij behoren wezenlijk anders? Bestaan er 19e-eeuwse slackers of 21e-eeuwse flaneurs en zijn er flaneur films of slacker boeken of zijn deze figuren onlosmakelijk verbonden met hun gebruikelijke periode en medium?Show less

This thesis examines a possible contribution to the narratological analyses as carried out within the field of Law and Literature by both signalling narrative speaker functions in analyses by James...Show moreThis thesis examines a possible contribution to the narratological analyses as carried out within the field of Law and Literature by both signalling narrative speaker functions in analyses by James Boyd White (1990) and Jeanne Gaakeer (1998) and locating these them in case law. The assumption that lies at the core of this thesis is that with the help of systematic analysis, it is possible to distinguish between four different speaker functions that manifest themselves in written case law: an authoritative author of legal decisions (chapter II), a narrator of the verdict (chapter III), characters that take part in the legal process and that are reflected upon in the judgment (chapter IV) and the text of the judgment itself (chapter V). These four possible speaking entities need to be disentangled to understand what authority or authorities we see when analysing judgments and to systematically conduct comparative research within the field of law and literature.Show less

Starting with Gamergate as a boiling point that affected the 2016 Ghostbusters remake, which resisted toxic fans explicitly. As well as analysing the Star Wars sequel trilogy, in particular The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker. Showing how coordinated attacks influenced the trilogy whilst it was being made.Show less
Realisme is een veelbesproken begrip dat onderhevig is aan eindeloze filosofische discussies. Ook binnen de mediatheorieën van onder andere film en fotografie is het een onderwerp dat zeer...Show moreRealisme is een veelbesproken begrip dat onderhevig is aan eindeloze filosofische discussies. Ook binnen de mediatheorieën van onder andere film en fotografie is het een onderwerp dat zeer regelmatig aan bod komt. Zo kunnen beide media gezien worden als hulpmiddelen om de ‘onbemiddelde waarheid’ vast te leggen, maar zijn deze ook beide gedreven in het creëren van fictieve taferelen. Vooral in het geval van cinema kan de mogelijkheid tot het creëren van illusies gezien worden als één van de kernpunten voor het daverende succes van het medium. Echter, bij het creëren van nieuwe, imaginaire werelden, ontstaan ook andere (filmische) wetten en regels dan die wij in onze realiteit gewend zijn. Deze afwijkende noties van realiteit hebben onder andere invloed op de manier waarop film en fotografie gebruikt en gezien worden. Zodoende is dit onderzoek erop gericht om erachter te komen hoe de media film en fotografie in films ingezet worden om de grenzen van onze realiteit te overschrijden.Show less
