In eerder onderzoek is gebleken dat verschillende soorten gedragingen van de ouder, zoals sensitiviteit, een relatie hebben met de ontwikkeling van emotieherkenning en theory of mind (ToM) bij het kind. Ook mishandeling blijkt in verband te staan met de ontwikkeling van een ToM: in verschillende studies hadden mishandelde kinderen een slechtere ToM dan niet-mishandelde kinderen. In huidig onderzoek wordt juist gekeken of deze relaties ook nog bestaan in jong volwassenheid. Er is gekeken naar de relatie van ouderlijk gedrag met ToM, bij de hele groep proefpersonen en bij hoge en lage mate van mishandeling. Er blijkt een relatie te zijn tussen accepterend ouderlijk gedrag en de ToM van de jongvolwassene, wat vooral in de groep met hoge mate van mishandeling is teruggevonden. De relatie tussen Psychologische controle en ToM blijkt slechts een trend, en tussen Strenge controle en ToM is geen verband gevonden. Ook is er gekeken naar het verschil in ToM tussen de groep met hoge en met lage mate van mishandeling. Hoewel dit resultaat slechts een trend is, lijkt het erop dat de mishandelde groep een slechtere ToM hebben. Er zijn dus een aantal veelbelovende resultaten gevonden, maar er is meer onderzoek nodig om conclusies te kunnen trekken.Show less

The sample consisted of 50 female participants, aged 18-30 years old. First, the relationship between oxytocin levels and the effect of emotion on the N170 was examined. In addition, the relationship between negative parenting experiences and the effect of emotion on the N170 was examined. Last, the possible moderating effect of negative parenting experiences on the relationship between the natural oxytocin levels and the effect of emotion on the N170 was examined. The parental love withdrawal questionnaire and an adapted version of the Conflict Tactic Scales (CTS; harsh discipline) were used to measure negative parenting (Huffmeijer, Alink, Tops, Grewen, Light, Bakermans-Kranenburg, Van IJzendoorn, 2013; Straus and Hamby, 1997). To study the effect of emotion on the N170, participants’ ERPs were studied in response to pictures showing emotional faces presented with feedback stimuli during an experimental task. Endogenous oxytocin levels were measured using saliva samples. Results suggested an interaction effect of high parental love withdrawal on the N170, meaning that participants who reported high love withdrawal showed higher amplitudes on the N170 in response to emotional faces than participants who reported low love withdrawal. This was in particular the case for the N170 over the left hemisphere. This may be due to the fact that experiences of love withdrawal may cause higher levels of fear of failure and the emotional faces were presented in combination with feedback stimuli. Differences in endogenous oxytocin levels or harsh discipline did not cause differences in the effect of emotion on the N170.Show less

In addition, former research suggested that the effect of oxytocin depends on contextual and individual features. The current study examined the effect of intranasally administered oxytocin on donating money to charity and whether experiences of negative parenting (love withdrawal and harsh discipline) in the past moderated this relationship. It was hypothesized that participants who received oxytocin would donate more money than participants who received a placebo. In addition, it was hypothesized that participants without a history of negative parenting would donate more money than participants who did experience negative parenting in the past and that the effect of oxytocin on donating money was stronger for participants without a history of negative parenting, compared to participants who did experience negative parenting in the past. The sample consisted of 57 female undergraduate students. Participants randomly received either an oxytocin or a placebo nasal spray at the beginning of the session. To measure experiences with negative parenting, questionnaires were used to measure experiences with parental use of love withdrawal and harsh discipline in the past. Because the participants underwent a long experiment, they received 50 Euros afterwards to thank them for their participation. At the end, after they had received the money, participants were shown a video of UNICEF and were asked to donate some money to charity. No main effects of oxytocin, experiences of parental use of love withdrawal and harsh discipline in the past on the amount of money donated were found. Experiences with parental use of harsh discipline as a moderator also failed to reach significance. But experiences with parental use of love withdrawal moderated the relationship between administered oxytocin and donating money. The positive effect of oxytocin (donating more money after oxytocin administration than after placebo administration) was mainly found for participants who experienced less love withdrawal in the past.Show less
In verschillende studies is een negatief verband gevonden tussen het hebben ervaren van fysieke kindermishandeling en het vertonen van prosociaal gedrag, net als tussen het hebben ervaren van...Show moreIn verschillende studies is een negatief verband gevonden tussen het hebben ervaren van fysieke kindermishandeling en het vertonen van prosociaal gedrag, net als tussen het hebben ervaren van fysieke kindermishandeling en het oxytocineniveau. Hiernaast is in recent onderzoek een positief verband tussen het oxytocineniveau en het vertonen van prosociaal gedrag gerapporteerd. Bovendien zijn er aanwijzingen dat oxytocineniveaus de relatie tussen fysieke kindermishandeling en prosociaal gedrag partieel of volledig mediëren. Naar dit alles is echter nog relatief weinig onderzoek gedaan. Om de opgestelde veronderstellingen te toetsen, werden in het huidige onderzoek tijdens een experimentele sessie verschillende metingen verricht bij 30 Nederlandse studentes tussen de 18 en 30 jaar (M = 20.23, SD = 2.66). Met behulp van een aangepaste versie van de Conflict Tactics Scale is gevraagd in hoeverre de participanten te maken hebben gehad met vormen van fysieke kindermishandeling. Verder werd aan het begin van de onderzoekssessie speeksel afgenomen en is hierin het basale oxytocineniveau gemeten. Ten slotte is middels een doneertaak het prosociale gedrag van de proefpersonen in kaart gebracht. Het volledige mediatiemodel is getest aan de hand van de vier condities van Baron en Kenny (1986). De twee enkelvoudige lineaire regressieanalyses toonden dat fysieke kindermishandeling en prosociaal gedrag niet significant samenhingen (p > .05), net als fysieke kindermishandeling en oxytocineniveau (p > .05). De meervoudige lineaire regressieanalyse liet zien dat oxytocineniveau en prosociaal gedrag (waarbij gecontroleerd werd voor fysieke kindermishandeling) ook geen verband hielden met elkaar (p > .05), net als fysieke kindermishandeling en prosociaal gedrag (waarbij gecontroleerd werd voor oxytocineniveau, p > .05). In conclusie bleek er hiermee geen sprake van een mediërende rol van oxytocine in de relatie tussen fysieke kindermishandeling en prosociaal gedrag. De afwezigheid van significante resultaten zou het gevolg kunnen zijn van enkele methodologische beperkingen van het huidige onderzoek. Mogelijk worden er wel relaties geconstateerd bij andere steekproeven of varianten van de variabelen. Gezien de limitaties en implicaties van de onderhavige studie is er meer en uitgebreider onderzoek nodig.Show less

To further our understanding, the current study examined the...Show moreEvidence suggests the existence of a possible correlation between oxytocin levels, degree of empathy and in turn prosocial behavior. To further our understanding, the current study examined the hypothesis whether donating behaviour could be explained by an influence of endogenous oxytocin on empathic concern. Thirty undergraduate 18-30 year old female students were selected from a larger study (van IJzendoorn, Huffmeijer, Alink, Brakermans-Kranenburg & Tops, 2011), which consisted of two experimental sessions. The current study conducted a secondary analysis of some of the data gathered during the second session of the original study, specifically from the participants who received a saline solution in the second experimental session. Levels of endogenous oxytocin in saliva samples, measures of empathy (interpersonal reactivity index questionnaire) and donations to measure donating behavior; were gathered in the original study and were also analyzed in the current study. Several simple regression analyses as well as a multiple regression analysis were conducted to test the hypothesis. The findings revealed no significant explanatory power of endogenous oxytocin and empathic concern on donating behaviour. Thus, the hypothesis was not confirmed. Both the use of an out-group individual as a recipient of the donations and the fact that all participants were likely highly socially proficient and empathic, may explain the null results. For future research it is recommended to use a more diverse sample including participants with both high and low social skills and to compare donating behaviour to in-group and out-group recipients. Finally, the differences between the prosocial effects of endogenous versus exogenous oxytocin levels should be determined.Show less

This thesis tested whether infants showed relatively greater left frontal asymmetry watching a supposedly positively valenced animation, and relatively greater right frontal asymmetry watching a supposedly negatively valenced animation. Also, the association between frontal EEG asymmetry of the infants and sensitivity of their mothers was tested. The infants did not show significantly stronger left frontal or right frontal asymmetry in response to a positively valenced or a negatively valenced situation. Only the left hemisphere showed a marginal (though non-significant) decrease of activity between the positively and negatively valenced animations. No association between frontal EEG asymmetry of the infants and sensitivity of their mothers was found. Even though no significant associations were found, the results suggest that, in more extensive or thorough research, effects of watching different emotionally valenced situations on frontal EEG asymmetry in infants may still be observed. Further research is needed.Show less

In addition, it is examined whether...Show moreThe purpose of this study is to assess whether infant attachment of early adopted children is related to their cortisol secretion at the age of fourteen. In addition, it is examined whether temperament at the age of fourteen influences this relationship. The 88 participants (37 boys and 51 girls) are examined through the following measurements: At the age of twelve months attachment is measured by the Strange Situation Procedure; at the age of fourteen years cortisol levels during the day are measured by taking saliva and temperament is measured by the Dutch Temperament Questionnaire. The first hypothesis concerned attachment and cortisol levels in general, namely that there is a connection between attachment and the height and slope of the cortisol diurnal curves. Furthermore, we expected insecurely attached children to have lower and flatter cortisol diurnal curves as compared to securely attached children and disorganized attached children to have lower and flatter cortisol diurnal curves as compared to organized attached children. The last hypothesis stated that the relation between attachment and cortisol secretion is different for children with different forms of temperament. All hypotheses had to be rejected according to the results and we conclude that early attachment is not related to cortisol secretion at the age of fourteen. Also, we conclude that temperament does not influence this relationship. A possible explanation for the results could be that there were only 88 participants included in this study. A too small sample size may cause that little differences are less likely to become evident. Another explanation may be that we have to deal with a particular sample, which includes adopted children and their adoptive parents. Off course, it is also possible that the results are indeed a reflection of the reality.Show less

As psychological control...Show morePsychological control is a parenting technique, that is described as parental controlling behaviour that intrudes on the emotional and psychological world of their child. As psychological control is suggested to create a link between the child’s behaviour and relational consequences with the parent, the child may experience it’s behaviour can be threatening the security of the parent-child relationship. This might specifically be true in a performance context, where the child’s performance on a task may be perceived as possibly threatening the security of the relationship. It is suggested that this relational consequences still emerge up to young adulthood. For these young adults, it is hypothesized that they will show more withdrawal tendencies from a performance task. These tendencies can be measured through electroencephalogram (EEG) activity of the frontal cortices. This thesis sought to determine whether psychological control influences the frontal brain asymmetry, that serves as a measure for approach-withdrawal motivation, in young adulthood. Baseline frontal EEG was recorded from 26 female undergraduates, preceding and after doing a time-estimation task. Approach motivation was observed preceding the task, and changed to withdrawal motivation afterwards. No influence of psychological control was found. An additional exploration of how motivation to perform well, and satisfaction with the performance, related to the approach-withdrawal motivation, yielded no significant results either. Despite the lack of significant results, some suggestions for further research emerge from this thesis. Replication with an increased sample size and additional measurements of the characteristics of the participants in the sample could contribute to the research in the field of psychological control and cortical activity.Show less

Hiervoor is bij de proefpersonen (allen vrouw) de feedback related negati-vity (FRN, een event-related potential (ERP) component die ontstaat bij negatieve feedback) en de P300 (een ERP component die een maat is voor aandacht) gemeten tijdens het doen van een time-estimation taak, waarbij goed/fout-informatie (een groen of rood plaatje, respectie-velijk) samenging met plaatjes van walgende of blije gezichten. De hypothese was dat proef-personen die in hun opvoeding veel te maken hebben gehad met Psychologische beheersing (Pb), een techniek waarbij de ouder negatieve signalen geeft in reactie op specifiek gedrag (zoals bijvoorbeeld het maken van fouten), een grotere FRN zouden hebben bij het krijgen van negatieve feedback en een grotere P300 bij feedbackplaatjes van walgende gezichten dan proefpersonen die weinig te maken hebben gehad met Pb. Dit werd verwacht omdat het ge-bruik van Pb een koppeling tot stand brengt tussen het maken van fouten, het zien van afkeu-rende signalen en een verminderd gevoel van eigenwaarde. Bij de andere twee onderzochte dimensies (Strakke beheersing-losse beheersing (Sb), de mate waarin het gedrag van het kind binnen bepaalde grenzen wordt gehouden zonder oordeel over het kind en Acceptatie-afwijzing (Acc), het onafhankelijk van het gedrag afwijzen (of accepteren) van het kind) wordt geen verband met de informatieverwerking verwacht, omdat deze dimensies geen kop-peling tot stand brengen tussen gedrag en eigenwaarde. Gemiddelde FRN- en P300 amplitu-des verschilden niet tussen proefpersonen met een lage of een hoge score op Pb. Wel hadden proefpersonen met een hoge score op Pb een kleiner verschil in FRN-amplitudes in reactie op walgende t.o.v. blije gezichten en een kleiner verschil (hoewel net niet significant) in FRN-amplitudes in reactie op rode t.o.v. groen feedback dan mensen met een hoge score. Dit zou verklaard kunnen worden door het ontbreken van een FRN-inhiberend proces dat bij mensen met een lage score op Pb wel op gang komt, wat zou kunnen wijzen op het vóórkomen van maladaptief perfectionisme: een goede respons is nog niet goed genoeg. Verder hadden men-sen met een hoge score op Pb een grotere P300 in reactie op walgende t.o.v. blije gezichten en mensen met een lage score op Pb juist een grotere P300 in reactie op blije t.o.v. walgende gezichten. Mensen met een lage score op Pb richten hun aandacht mogelijk op positieve sig-nalen of leiden hun aandacht van negatieve signalen af. Dit zou een copingstrategie kunnen zijn om de eigenwaarde op peil te houden. Deze copingstrategie ontbreekt bij mensen met een hoge score op Pb. Het gebruik van Pb heeft dus mogelijk negatieve gevolgen voor de levens-kwaliteit voor iemand die hiermee opgevoed wordt.Show less
