While watching James McTeigue’s V for Vendetta (2005), I came to notice the similarities between the film’s dystopian society and twentieth century totalitarian regimes—the Third Reich (1933-1945), Fascist Italy (1922-1943), and Soviet Russia (1922-1991)—and their respective treatment of art. In order to answer the question of how art is represented in films about totalitarianism, and contextualize this relationship historically, six films have been analyzed. These films have been selected for their depiction of fictional totalitarian regimes which bear resemblance to the aforementioned three historic ones. A discussion is created which analyzes how art and material culture in the films are used to indoctrinate the people and reaffirm the government’s power. This includes not only propaganda posters and images, but the use of symbols and sigils, as well as the use of art to establish the regime as a new religion. The desire for a “one true art form” to replace the degenerate arts and promote the regime, as seen in the Third Reich and Soviet Russia especially, is not seen in the films, which instead focus more on a holistic ban on art and culture. Finally, the way degenerate art is represented in the film shows it to provide support for the narrative. Most art seen in the films belongs to the characters who embody the rebellion or those with enough power and resources to exist above the illegality of art ownership.Show less

Collections could include a wide range of objects, which were studied and displayed at home, and sometimes described and visualised in books. In the Dutch Republic around the turn of the eighteenth century, collections of natural objects were especially popular. The books that describe and show these collections are important sources for understanding how nature was appreciated and studied in the 18th-century Dutch Republic. However, from a modern perspective, the detailed images of often symmetrically arranged objects in these books are hard to understand as either 'art' or 'science'. This thesis explains how conventions from both natural history and applied arts, as well as certain religious ideas influenced these images. Using three case studies, D'Amboinsche rariteitkamer (1705) by Georg Rumphius, Het tweede deel van het wondertooneel der natuur (1715) by Levinus Vincent, and the Thesaurus (four volumes, 1734–1765) by Albertus Seba, the thesis shows that these conventions and ideas were used flexibly by different authors-collectors to suit their own purposes and approach to nature.Show less

During the last two decades, the revaluation and revival of these two concepts in exhibition spaces have been the main subject in which modern audiences have been illuminated with the different visual representation strategies of the early modern cabinets. However, this revival is an underexposed theme in current art historical fields and little has been written about this shift from past till present. Therefore, this thesis aims to highlight to what extend the concepts of wonder and the Wunderkammer corresponds and have been reinterpreted in contemporary art and museum practices.Show less

Philip IV bought around thirty paintings from the master's estate. In this operation, a group of painters developed important tasks of advising either on behalf of the Spanish king or Rubens. Here these tasks will be further analyzed in order to add evidence to the phenomenon of painter-advisors in Europe throughout the 17th century, as well as to their multifaceted careers that, more often that it is thought, not only included the production of paintings, but also other services based on their connoisseurship.Show less

Throughout this thesis, three case studies will be explored: the arrival of exotic animals at the Medici court, the Prague court of Rudolf II as a centre of scientific culture, and Johan Maurits’ stay in the New World during his time as a governor of Dutch Brazil between 1637 and 1644. In Maurits’ case, his was a court that moves to a place where many exotic animals originated, instead of the other way round. All three of these case studies will shed a different light on the presence of exotic animals under the rule of the Medicis, Rudolf II, and Johan Maurits.Show less

The porcelain rooms introduced by the Orange princesses were the basis of Mary’s way of display, with regard to some decorative elements and the different types of the rooms according the function of the porcelain. She also added her original touch to the previous manner of porcelain display in collaboration with French designer Daniel Marot the Elder (1661-1752). The client Mary’s personal taste must not be underestimated. Her own creativity was expressed by the unconventional way of mixing her two major interests - oriental porcelain and plants. Through the newly designed Delft wares, fresh flowers came into the porcelain rooms in unprecedented manner and oriental porcelain came into the garden; they mutually worked together and formed a unified whole. This research provides us with a new aspect of early modern women’s contribution to creating domestic culture from ingredients that came from different regions.Show less

At the same time, artists began incorporating the bodies of insects and small animals into their works. Small animals and insects became their own major subjects of study for philosophers of nature and artists. In addition, the line between artist and philosopher of nature blurred, leading to artists and philosophers of nature collaborating over their findings. Moreover, it was a time of blossoming cultural...Show moreWhen we think about Vienna around 1900, our first associations with this period are fin-de-siècle and the establishment of the Art Nouveau period. Moreover, it was a time of blossoming cultural life during the greatest period of the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The main goal of Viennese Art Nouveau was to supplant the entrenched historical styles with modern, bourgeois and Austrian style. Furthermore, the main concept of the Art Nouveau was to strive for a style unity in every possible field of art. The architecture and decorative arts of the Sezessionsstil were much appreciated by Viennese cultural circles. The Austrian cultural centre subsequently became a home to this type of art, since 1900. There emerged two primary art associations called Sezession established in 1897 by Gustav Klimt (1862-1918), and Wiener Werkstätte, begun in 1903 by Josef Hoffman (1870-1956). Klimt’s paintings are characterised by applied influences of symbolic paintings of Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, elements of Egyptian paintings, Byzantine mosaics and Japanese art. The essence of those factors can be found in later Klimt paintings such as The Kiss (1907-1908). The architect Josef Hoffman on the other hand, was operating with straight lines and geometrical figures. One of the most eminent projects ascribed to Hoffman is the Sanatorium in Purkersdorf (1903-1904) and the Palais Stocklet in Brussels (1905-1911). Notably, Sezession became an opposition to academic art and 19th century eclecticism. The main objective of this style was to break with historicism and focus on nature instead. However, along with Art Nouveau, Vienna also took a traditional approach to art and collecting, understood as creating a collection based on early modern Italian and Renaissance art as well as on Dutch Golden Age paintings. International connections, such as a good flow of information on sales and the developing art trade in a specific period enabled many collectors to purchase a good number of old master paintings. Among the Viennese collectors captivated by Renaissance art, Karol Lanckoroński (1848-1933) is the eminent example of a collector, who managed to create an incredibly interesting and broad collection, as we will see in following chapters.Show less

Wilhelmina en haar gezin zijn oprechte...Show moreIn de scriptie is een overzicht gegeven van de rol die Wilhelmina van Pruisen speelde als opdrachtgever van kunstenaars. Welk beeld komt daar uit naar voren? Wilhelmina en haar gezin zijn oprechte liefhebbers van muziek en toneel geweest. Vorstelijke representatie is echter de belangrijkste drijfveer bij de opdrachten van het stadhouderlijk hof en bij haar eigen opdrachten. Wilhelmina was zich zeer bewust van het belang van de zichtbaarheid van de stadhouder en zijn familie. De grote uitgaven aan haar garderobe, het belang dat ze hechtte aan de audiënties, haar aanwezigheid bij toneel- en muziekuitvoeringen en haar actieve rol aan het hof getuigen hiervan. Bij de gerichtheid op het prestige van het stadhouderschap, past ook dat Wilhelmina en de stadhouder bijna uitsluitend opdrachten verstrekten aan schilders die hun portretten vervaardigden of een bijdrage leverden aan de decoratie van de paleizen. Op een andere manier dragen ook de contacten die Wilhelmina onderhield met leidende figuren in kunst en wetenschap, bij aan dit prestige van het stadhouderlijk hof. De aandacht en betrokkenheid bij de inrichting van de nieuwe vleugel van het stadhouderlijk kwartier en de betrokkenheid bij de herinrichting van Huis ten Bosch zijn ook in dit licht te zien. De huisvesting van de stadhouderlijke familie moest het aanzien van de stadhouder versterken. Wilhelmina gebruikt daarbij ook bewust haar positie als lid van het Pruisisch vorstenhuis. Subtiel is dit zichtbaar in de decoratie van het plafond van haar bedkamer op Huis ten Bosch en heel nadrukkelijk toont zij bezoekers in haar ontvangstvertrekken in het stadhouderlijk kwartier haar nauwe verwantschap aan de Pruisische koningen. De openstelling van de stadhouderlijke collecties past in het streven naar een zo groot mogelijke zichtbaarheid en aanzien van het stadhouderlijk bewind. De hybride positie van de schilderijengalerij, die zowel door de openstelling als door het gebruik als decor voor ontvangsten bijdroeg aan het stadhouderlijk aanzien, is daarvan een voorbeeld. Van Meerkerk constateert in zijn artikel Vorstelijk mecenaat of cultuurbeleid? dat het mecenaat van Willem V en Wilhelmina van Pruisen evenveel overeenkomsten vertoont met dat hogere burgerij als dat van vorsten en hogere adel. Die constatering kan ik niet onderschrijven. Hun mecenaat lijkt zoals hiervoor is betoogd juist vrijwel uitsluitend gericht te zijn geweest op versterking van het stadhouderlijk aanzien. Wilhelmina lijkt geen bijzondere affiniteit te hebben gehad met de ménagerie, de naturaliaverzameling en de bibliotheek. Zij wijkt met het accent op vorstelijke representatie niet af van haar echtgenoot, die echter op zijn beurt minder affiniteit lijkt te hebben gehad met de inrichting van de stadhouderlijke verblijven. De belangrijke rol die Wilhelmina bij de inrichting van de stadhouderlijke verblijven heeft gespeeld, past bij de maatschappelijke ontwikkeling dat dit steeds meer een vrouwelijk domein is geworden. Zowel in haar eigen vertrekken als in de betrokkenheid bij de vormgeving en de inrichting van andere vertrekken toont ze haar oog voor kwaliteit en nieuwe ontwikkelingen. Bij de verbouwing en de herinrichting van paleizen vallen zowel haar voorliefde voor chinoiserie als haar vroege voorliefde voor de neoclassicistische stijl op. Het is lastig om bij haar liefde voor lakwerk, Chinese behangsels en andere oosterse accenten haar behoefte om de mode te volgen te scheiden van een meer persoonlijke voorliefde. De aanwezigheid van chinoiserieën in haar privé vertrekken, het feit dat zij al in 1768 Chinese koepels in de tuinen van Het Loo liet realiseren, de verbouwing tussen 1770 en 1780 die op Huis ten Bosch en ook de verbouwing in 1790-91 van het Oude Hof laten echter zo’n consistente voorkeur voor Chinese behangsels en decoraties zien, dat hieruit een persoonlijke voorkeur is af te leiden. Haar vroege omarming van het neoclassicisme blijkt uit het gegeven dat zowel in Huis ten Bosch (1770-1780) als in het stadhouderlijk kwartier (1772) de neoclassicistische stijl het eerst werd toegepast in de vertrekken van de prinses. Het stadhouderlijk hof heeft een belangrijke rol gespeeld bij de introductie van het neoclassicisme in de Republiek. De stijl was door de internationale oriëntatie al vroeg bekend aan het hof. Zo kocht Van Heiden Reinestein, de latere kamerheer van Willem V, al in 1764 in Parijs twee knopen “a la Grecque”. Ook de geleerden Camper en Hemsterhuis speelden met hun publicaties en opdrachten een belangrijke rol bij de verspreiding van de neoclassicistische stijlopvattingen. Wilhelmina zal hierdoor ongetwijfeld zijn beïnvloed, net als ze beïnvloed zal zijn door de bouwactiviteiten in neoclassicistische stijl in Berlijn en Potsdam. Ze volgde hiermee nadrukkelijk niet haar oom Frederik de Grote die tussen 1771 en 1775 de Neue Kammern nog geheel in Rococostijl liet decoreren. De verhouding van het stadhouderlijk bewind met het neoclassicisme is complex. Juist door het hof werden de laatste stijlontwikkelingen in Frankrijk nauw gevolgd. De nieuwe stijl was echter ook verbonden aan de denkbeelden van de Verlichting en de klassieke vormgeving werd met een rechtvaardige en natuurlijke levenswijze geassocieerd. In het politieke klimaat van de Republiek werden deze idealen juist meer en meer door de Patriotten omarmd. Het lijkt erop dat Wilhelmina zich hierbij meer vrijheid kon of wilde permitteren dan haar echtgenoot. Bij het onderzoek kwam naar voren dat het lastig is om de rol die Wilhelmina bij de opdrachten van het hof heeft gespeeld exact te duiden. Wel geven regelmatige opdrachten aan bepaalde kunstenaars en handwerkslieden indicaties van haar voorkeur, evenals uitspraken die zij en haar familie doen in hun onderlinge correspondentie. Uit de adviezen van Wilhelmina aan haar dochter Louise, spreekt een grote vanzelfsprekendheid dat de echtgenote van een vorst zich met politiek en met de inrichting van haar paleizen bemoeit. Bij de opdrachten aan schilders valt Wilhemina’s voorkeur voor Liotard, Tischbein en Jan van Os op. Deze schilders hadden in hun tijd al een internationale reputatie. Bij de bestelling van miniaturen ging de voorkeur evident uit naar het werk van Pieter Lesage. De prinses zal als niet onverdienstelijke schilder en miniaturist de kwaliteit van deze schilders hebben gewaardeerd. Bij de aanschaf van meubilair legt Wilhelmina een duidelijke voorkeur voor het werk van Matthijs Horrix aan de dag. Ofschoon kostbaar meubilair en toegepaste kunst in het algemeen, in de achttiende eeuw een belangrijkere plaats in nam dan in onze tijd, is haar expliciete waardering voor zijn werk opvallend. Bij het bestellen van zilver is haar voorkeur minder uitgesproken, Wilhelmina koos weliswaar voor de beste zilversmeden die in er in Den Haag beschikbaar waren, maar ze ging daarmee voorbij aan het feit dat de Amsterdamse zilversmeden de leidende rol van Den Haag hadden overgenomen. Het porselein dat eind van de eeuw in de Republiek werd vervaardigd kon haar kennelijk niet bekoren, want porselein heeft ze altijd in Berlijn of elders in Duitsland besteld. Dit is vooral opvallend voor het Haagse porselein waarvan de kwaliteit van de verfijnde schilderingen werd geroemd. De kwaliteit van het materiaal, de schilderingen en het glazuur, werd vergeleken met die van het Saksische porselein, maar het was aanzienlijk duurder. Wellicht is dat de reden waarom Wilhelmina het Duitse porselein prefereerde. Wilhelmina blijft bij de uitoefening van haar mecenaat met de voorkeur voor miniatuurschilderkunst, haar liefde voor meubilair en porselein en haar veel geroemde borduurwerk, nadrukkelijk binnen het vrouwelijk domein. Het niveau en de zelf kritische wijze waarop ze de boorduurkunst en de schilderkunst beoefende, duiden op een bovengemiddelde ambitie op deze terreinen. Ook haar betrokkenheid bij de herinrichting van de paleizen de geringe betrokkenheid bij de stadhouderlijke verzamelingen en de herinrichting van de tuinen, passen binnen de maatschappelijke opvattingen voor passende bezigheden voor een vrouw in haar maatschappelijke positie. In dit opzicht is het mecenaat van Wilhelmina van Pruisen volledig in lijn met het algemene beeld dat door Cynthia Lawrence werd geschetst in Women and Art in Early Modern Europe, Patrons Collectors and Connoisseurs (zie pagina 5). Het is gezien de ruimte die prinses Wilhelmina in het politieke domein heeft genomen niet waarschijnlijk dat zij zich beperkt voelde tot de terreinen waarop haar mecenaat was gericht. Er zijn meer indicaties dat hier haar persoonlijke voorkeur lag. De financiële mogelijkheden van het mecenaat van Wilhelmina van Pruisen waren nog beperkter dan die van haar echtgenoot. Het politieke klimaat beperkte eveneens de mogelijkheden voor het verstrekken van grote opdrachten. Hierdoor zijn er door stadhouder Willem V en zijn echtgenote geen nieuwe paleizen, parken of tuinen gerealiseerd en zijn er afgezien van de ménagerie geen grote nieuwe verzamelingen aangelegd. Binnen de mogelijkheden, zijn echter vooral dankzij het oog van prinses Wilhelmina voor goede kwaliteit en voor nieuwe ontwikkelingen, mooie opdrachten tot stand gekomen. Helaas resteert hiervan door latere verbouwingen en door de veiling van het stadhouderlijk bezit maar een klein deel. Op het schilderij van Benjamin Bolomey waarmee het onderzoek naar het mecenaat van Wilhelmina van Pruisen begon, zit de prinses voor een ezel waarop een schilderij staat en leunt ze tegen een piano. Ze ontvangt een penseel uit handen van de personificatie Schilderkunst en een lier en bloemenkrans van de Poëzie, terwijl rechts de personificatie van de Muziek toekijkt. Bolomey geeft hiermee treffend haar persoonlijke belangstelling voor die kunstvormen weer. Boven haar ontvangen de drie gratiën uit handen van het genius van de kunsten een lauwerkrans om daarmee haar hoofd te tooien. Een krans die ze met haar belangstelling voor de ontwikkelingen in de kunst en met haar oog voor bijzondere kwaliteit heeft verdiend.Show less

"For Your...Show moreThe present thesis seeks to analyze the specific issues emerging from the transition of a private collection into the public realms of the museum, exemplified by a specific exhibition. "For Your Eyes Only. A Private Collection between Mannerism and Surrealism" has displayed Richard and Ulla Dreyfus-Best’s private collection for the general public at the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation in Venice and the Kunstmuseum Basel as a travelling exhibition in 2014. The interaction between ‘private’ and ‘public’ has been a central aspect when examining the origins of the museum. Although these interrelations have been academically acknowledged in a historical context and in connection with the alleged “boom” of personal-collection museums, the curatorial standpoint of this transition has been fairly neglected. Moreover, neither the Dreyfus-Best collection, nor its public display has been thorogouly investigated. Thus, new insights beyond the object’s textual and formal connections haven’t been published so far. The following research intends to outlines the underlying structures of the collection’s transition from the private into the public realm of the Kunstmuseum Basel. The main research objective is thus to unfold the ways of curatorial reinterpretation in order to understand how a private collection is made understandable and intellectually accessible for the public by means of particular structures and concepts of order. The Dreyfus-Best collection’s similarities to a Renaissance Wunderkammer will be used as starting point to question whether similar structures were implemented in the curatorial concept of the exhibition at the Kunstmuseum. Furthermore, Michel Foucault’s account on the ‘Renaissance episteme’ will be examined, in order to propose a certain applicability of these ordering principles to the basic structure of the museum-exhibition.Show less
