Volunteering decisions can be framed in terms of gains (e.g., gaining something for the collective) or in terms of losses (e.g., preventing a loss for the collective), which can potentially impact the decisions people make. In this study, we aimed to investigated whether framing impacts one’s decision to volunteer. As our secondary aim, we examined the prevalence of turn-taking per framing type. Here we provide detailed descriptions of our variables framing, volunteering behaviour, and turn- taking. The study showed no significant relationship between framing and volunteering behaviour, nor between framing and turn-taking. However, the study does provide further avenues for exploring these variables under more controlled settings, taking in risk orientations.Show less

This study explores the influence of observability, dependence and a combination of both, on volunteering within the Volunteer’s Dilemma (VoD). It was hypothesized that observation and dependence would increase volunteering, with the combination of both factors being the most effective in increasing volunteering. For the dependence conditions, it was further hypothesized, based on previous research, that participants would identify more with a superordinate identity, and that this would correlate with increased volunteering. However, both the observability and dependence conditions did not significantly increase volunteering behaviour, when compared to a control, whilst the observability & dependence condition had a negative correlation with volunteering. Participants also identified more with the subordinate identity, which was found to be significantly negatively correlated to volunteeringShow less

The tragedy of the anticommons is a phenomenon that arises when individuals have the right to exclude other individuals from a limited common resource. This can result in no one having an opportunity to benefit from the common resource and the common resource becoming underused and wasted. Varying the degree of uncertainty and accountability, a social decision-making task on the computer was conducted with 136 participants. The participants indicated their willingness to accept (WTA) price of a lottery ticket with three different degrees of uncertainty about the offer of the buyer of the lottery tickets (certainty, low uncertainty or high uncertainty). Furthermore, there were two accountability conditions where participants either did or did not justify their decisions to their group members. As predicted by previous research, uncertainty had a negative effect on decision making. Participants indicated a higher WTA price and thus behaved less cooperative as uncertainty increased. Unexpectedly, accountability had no significant effect on decision making. Participants indicated a similar WTA price whether they had to justify their decisions to group members or not.Show less

The current study attempts to fill that void by conducting an experimental investigation of three levels of uncertainty (no vs. low vs. high) regarding buyers' willingness- to-pay (WTP) and how that influences the sellers' willingness-to-accept (WTA) in an anticommons dilemma. Furthermore, this study will investigate if accountability (accountability vs. no accountability) counters the effect of uncertainty. To investigate this, participants (N = 141) will be exposed to all three uncertainty conditions while taking part in a 3-person anticommons game. Additionally, accountability is manipulated by whether or not the participants have to justify their decisions to their fellow group members. As predicted, participants set higher WTA prices under uncertain conditions. However, accountability did not attenuate this effect.Show less

Show less

Show less
