Described by President Sukarno of Indonesia as “the first intercontinental conference of colored peoples in the history of mankind”, it marked what Nehru described as “the political emergence of over half the world’s population in world affairs”. Many scholars have attempted to discuss the history and legacy of this conference, yet there is still no comprehensive studies that present the complexity of the Bandung Conference. The thesis attempts to examine the roots, moments and legacies of the Bandung Conference. It investigates how did the concept of the Bandung Conference emerge and present itself as a vision during the Cold War. It also discusses the discourse, dispute and result of the conference and to what extent did the Bandung Conference have implications for the Asian and African countries and international politics.Show less

Neoliberal policies have opened up national markets to international competitors. In Latin America the traditional cultivation of coffee by small farms started to become challenged due to the subjection to the competition with multinational enterprises. Farmers have set up cooperatives and the Fair Trade Organization have assisted them to obtain a fair access to the market. In addition, fair trade cooperatives intent to promote the development of the farmers’ living standards. The Fair Trade cooperative, Union of Indigenous Communities of the Isthmus Region in Mexico and Society of Small Producers for Coffee Export in Nicaragua, seem to have reduced the vulnerability of farmers to fluctuating market prices. Although, the Fair Trade cooperatives have offered farmers a platform of development and sustainability, the effects of Fair Trade and the cooperatives internal procedures are likely to be influenced by the social, economic and political context of each country. However, while limitations are present to the effects of Fair Trade, the organization has provided a positive step in the process of sustainable development and equitable international trade.Show less

Evenals diverse andere Europese landen onderging Nederland na de Tweede Wereldoorlog een dekolonisatieproces dat toch wel als een trauma werd ervaren. De teloorgang van Nederlands-Indië was voor velen moeilijk te accepteren en dit speelde zeker een grote rol in de gebeurtenissen welke plaatsvonden in de periode 1945-1962, met als slot episode het Nieuw Guinea conflict. Dit proces en in het bijzonder de Amerikaanse betrokkenheid erbij wordt in dit stuk chronologisch uiteengezet in drie hoofdstukken. In hoofdstuk één zal de periode van de proclamatie tot soevereiniteitsoverdracht worden besproken. Hier zal aan de hand van de belangen van de betrokkene partijen de oorsprong van het Nieuw Guinea conflict worden beschreven. In dit hoofdstuk staat centraal wat de oorsprong is van de Amerikaanse betrokkenheid bij het Nieuw Guinea conflict. In hoofdstuk twee zal de periode van de soevereiniteitsoverdracht tot aan Zwarte Sinterklaas worden besproken. Hier zal de nadruk liggen op de houding van de Verenigde Staten in de verscherping van het Nieuw Guinea conflict. In dit hoofdstuk wordt gekeken naar wat de factoren waren voor de Amerikaanse standpuntbepaling bij de escalatie van het Nieuw Guinea conflict. In het derde en tevens laatste hoofdstuk zal het eindspel om Nieuw Guinea de hoofdmoot zijn. In dit hoofdstuk wordt onderzocht of Nederland de steunbelofte van de Verenigde Staten verkeerd heeft ingeschat. Met name de Amerikaanse besluitvorming en de Nederlandse interpretatie hiervan zal hier een belangrijke rol spelen tot en met de afwikkeling van het conflict. Aan de hand van deze beschrijvingen zal antwoord worden gegeven op de probleemstelling van dit onderzoek: Hoe leidde een te groot vertrouwen van Nederland op de Amerikaanse steun in het Nieuw Guinea conflict, op het moment dat het nodig was, tot het verlies van Nieuw Guinea. Om te onderzoeken hoe de Amerikaanse houding en besluitvorming zich heeft ontwikkeld in het Nieuw Guinea conflict is met name gebruik gemaakt van de Foreign Relations of the United States. Deze bronnen zijn beschikbaar in het officiële en openbare online archief van de Foreign Relations of the United States waarvan gebruik is gemaakt van de gedigitaliseerde en gedeclassificeerde archieven van de Truman administratie, de Eisenhower administratie en de Kennedy administratie. Waar mogelijk was is ook gebruik gemaakt van Nederlandse officiële bescheiden. Daarnaast is gebruikgemaakt van standaardliteratuur over het Nieuw Guinea conflict van onder andere Nederlandse, Amerikaanse en Indonesische hand. De Geus met De Nieuw Guinea Kwestie heeft als belangrijkste standaardwerk heeft gediend voor dit onderzoek. Dit eindwerkstuk bestrijkt drie relevante thema's. Allereerst wordt het Nieuw Guinea conflict in dit onderzoek in de context van de Koude Oorlog geplaatst in plaats van in de algemeen erkende dekolonisatie context. Het tweede thema betreft het feit dat een klein land heel voorzichtig moet zijn om op zijn bondgenoten te vertrouwen, zeker wanneer het zaken betreft die niet direct met het NAVO-bondgenootschap te maken hebben. Het derde thema is dat het zeer relevant is om terug te kijken in de geschiedenis van gebeurtenissen aan de hand van documenten die later zijn gedeclassificeerd. Deze documenten geven toch een beter inzicht in wat op dat moment speelde, wat natuurlijk niet onmiddellijk op het moment dat het plaatsvond naar buiten werd gebracht. Zo kan bijvoorbeeld in retroperspectief worden gesteld dat minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, Joseph Marie Antoine Hubert Luns, die veel kritiek over zich heen heeft gehad met betrekking tot de afwikkeling van het Nieuw Guinea conflict, de zaak diplomatiek goed heeft aangepakt. Voor de spelling van Indonesische woorden en namen heb ik gekozen voor de traditionele spelling waar de 'oe' nog aanwezig is en niet is vervangen door de 'u', zoals bijvoorbeeld met het woord Papoea in tegenstelling tot het woord Papua. Voor de spelling van namen en termen heb ik gekozen om de verklaring van Indonesische afkortingen niet te vertalen. De termen Indonesië, Republik Indonesia, Republiek en Republik heb ik door elkaar gebruikt, waar het mij het meest geschikt leek. Voor de namen van personen heb ik mij gehouden aan de spelling zoals die in de door mij gebruikte literatuur werd gepresenteerd.Show less

Rice...Show moreThis is a study of a colonial economy from an agricultural perspective, focusing on the interaction and conflicts between rice and sugarcane production in Java during the late colonial period. Rice is the most important staple food, while sugarcane has been the principal cash crop between 1870s and 1920s. Since the natural habitats for two crops are similar in many respects but large-scale intercropping was precluded due to different irrigation practices, rice and sugarcane have been competing for the limited resource of land since the dawn of mass production at the end of the nineteenth century. This thesis attempts to answer whether the proliferation of sugar plantation contributed to the rice shortage in Java, and how the shortfall in rice might influence the distribution and expansion of sugar plantation in the tropical island. Besides the quantitative analysis with agricultural statistics, it also investigates the process of policy-making, in which the colonial government exerted regulatory influence over different interest groups as far as the production of rice and sugar were concerned in the 1910s and 1920s.Show less

Both of these processes made use of a similar infrastructure that was laid out over the seas. But was there a connection between the these two phenomena other than time?
