Additionally, we investigated...Show moreIn this study, we investigated how people’s contribution decisions in a public goods game change when uncertainty about the effects of the contribution is introduced. Additionally, we investigated whether social value orientation (SVO) and subjective wealth (SW) might have moderating effects on contribution behavior. Using a mixed model, we found that participants contributed significantly less in the uncertain condition when there was a chance that the contributions may be wasted compared to the certain condition. However, we did not find any moderating effects on contribution behavior for SVO and SW. When it was uncertain whether incurring a personal cost would benefit the collective, both pro-socials and pro-selves contributed less to a public good. Overall, participants seemed to choose the option with the highest expected utility and the least uncertainty.Show less

There were two conditions, in...Show moreThis study focused on the effect of rewards on the cooperative behaviour of individuals when they were part of a mixed group containing both democrats and republicans. There were two conditions, in the first condition the participants were told they could receive a different amount of reward, based on their political preference. In the second condition, this differential treatment was impossible, and all group members received the same amount of reward. It was expected that participants would cooperate more in the condition where they could be favoured by the reward-giver who shared their same political preferences. The study outcomes showed the opposite effect: individuals cooperated more when rewarding implied an equal treatment for all compared to when there was a possibility of being favoured.Show less

The promising solution to increase cooperation is punishment. However, studies mostly used homogenous groups. The objective was to answer the question if punishments systems are effective in enhancing cooperation in diverse groups. Data for this study were collected using an online experiment where the participants had to decide how many monetary units to contribute to the common pool. Diverse groups were created by two subgroups: Democrats and Republicans. Participants were randomly divided over two conditions; in one condition the third-party punishers made a strategy applying to everyone and in the other a strategy based on group membership. The findings suggest that punishment is less effective if discrimination is possible. A recommendation for organizations is that the use of punishment in diverse groups can be effective if the receiver does not expect to be discriminated against.Show less

In an experimental study, we compare a...Show moreA lot of crises provide an opportunity to build back better than the situation was beforehand. Studies on social dilemmas generally overlook this opportunity. In an experimental study, we compare a public-good model where participants can turn a negative externality into a positive one with two more traditional models. By increasing the initial negative externality, we assess the effect of increasingly severe crises on cooperation. Our results indicate that participants contribute more in a condition where they can turn a negative situation into a positive one than they do in a condition where they can only reduce the impact of the negative situation. More importantly, increasing the turning point does not impact contributions in such a transformation model while it does in more traditional models. We conclude that cooperation during crises is fundamentally different when people have the opportunity to turn the crises into something positive.Show less

De...Show moreIn deze studie werd gekeken naar coöperatiebeslissingen wanneer mensen gezamenlijk een collectieve ramp af dienen te wenden door aan een publieke vraag naar persoonlijke offers te voldoen. De invloed van deze publieke vraag op coöperatiebeslissingen en de rol die sociale waardeoriëntatie hierin speelt werden onderzocht. Coöperatiebeslissingen zijn in drie verschillende condities gemeten, met deze drie condities werd publieke vraag gemanipuleerd. De resultaten van deze studie laten zien dat publieke vraag naar individuele bijdrages niet als focal point lijkt te dienen voor coöperatiebeslissingen. Tegen de verwachting in lijkt men bij een zekere publieke vraag geen eerlijkheidsregels toe te passen. Prosocialen bleken coöperatiever dan prozelven als er geen publieke vraag was en ze waren even coöperatief als prozelven als er een zekere publieke vraag was. In tegenstelling tot de hypothese waren prosocialen niet coöperatiever dan prozelven bij een onzekere publieke vraag. Opvallend was dat publieke vraag wel impact had, ondanks dat publieke vraag niet als focal point leek te dienen. Het zorgde er namelijk wel voor dat men niet meer zijn/haar sociale waardeoriëntatie volgde.Show less

Dit artikel...Show moreEen collectieve ramp kan bestempeld worden als een sociaal dilemma. Sociale dilemma’s hebben als kenmerk dat het individuele belang in conflict raakt met het collectief belang. Dit artikel introduceert de term Publieke Vraag. Deze term geeft de vraag naar persoonlijke offers om een graduele overgang van negatieve naar positieve gevolgen te behalen weer. De publieke vraag en omgevingsonzekerheid die aanwezig zijn bij collectieve rampen worden onderzocht aan de hand van de eveneens in dit onderzoek geïntroduceerde public account games. Hierin worden de coöperatie beslissingen geanalyseerd die mogelijk gemaakt worden tijdens een collectieve ramp. Daarnaast kijkt dit artikel naar de verwachting van andermans bijdrage en het gebruik van focal points voor coördinatie. De publieke vraag en onzekerheid lijken geen impact te hebben op de coöperatiebeslissingen en verwachting van andermans bijdrage. Dit suggereert dat de publieke vraag niet als focal point wordt gebruikt om te coördineren tijdens een collectieve ramp zoals voorafgaand werd verwacht. Theoretische en methodologische implicaties worden besproken.Show less

In dit onderzoek wordt onderzocht of deze publieke vraag naar persoonlijke offers invloed heeft op de coöperatiebeslissingen van mensen met verschillende sociale waardeoriëntaties. Voor dit onderzoek hebben 85 participanten meegedaan aan 3 verschillende Public Goods Games zonder, met zekere en met onzekere publieke vraag. Daarnaast hebben de participanten een vragenlijst ingevuld om te testen wat hun sociale waardeoriëntatie is. Er werd verwacht dat de coöperatiebeslissingen van participanten afhankelijk zouden zijn van hun sociale waardeoriëntatie bij de afwezigheid van een publieke vraag, terwijl dit niet het bij een zekere publieke vraag niet het geval zou zijn (hypothese 1). Het verwachte interactie-effect werd inderdaad aangetroffen in de resultaten. Daarnaast werd er verwacht dat de coöperatiebeslissingen van participanten bij een onzekere publieke vraag weer afhankelijk zouden zijn van de sociale waardeoriëntatie (hypothese 2). Uit de resultaten blijkt dat er geen significant verschil is tussen de situatie met zekere en onzekere publieke vraag. Dit betekent dat het toevoegen van onzekerheid in het huidige onderzoek geen effect heeft gehad op de hoogte van de contributies. De wijze waarop de vraag naar persoonlijke offers in dit onderzoek is geoperationaliseerd geeft mogelijkheid tot nieuwe inzichten vergeleken met de bekende Public Goods Games.Show less

In this study, we investigate the influence of public demand (for individual sacrifices) and its uncertainty on people's cooperative decisions, and on expectations about others' cooperative decisions. Our first hypothesis was that the expected cooperative decision of others and people's own cooperative decision would be higher if there was a public demand than if there was no public demand at all. The second hypothesis contained that both the expectation and the cooperative decision were higher if public demand was certain than if public demand was uncertain. Both hypothesis 1 and 2 have not been fulfilled. No differences were found between cooperative decision and expected cooperative decision between different conditions. From this we can conclude that public demand does not seem to serve as a focal point for cooperative decisions.Show less

Voor het afwenden van de opwarming van de aarde is er een door de...Show moreIn deze studie onderzoeken we of de mens in staat is om een collectieve ramp, zoals de opwarming van de aarde, af te wenden. Voor het afwenden van de opwarming van de aarde is er een door de individuen bijgedragen aantal offers nodig, welke dit artikel de ‘publieke vraag’ wordt genoemd. De waarde van de publieke vraag is in het geval van de opwarming van de aarde onbekend. Er is gekeken naar de invloed van de aanwezigheid en onzekerheid van de publieke vraag op coöperatiebeslissingen en de rol verwachtingen die mensen hebben van de bijdragen van anderen. Dit is onderzocht in drie soorten Public Goods Games, waarbij de publieke vraag gemanipuleerd werd. Er was een conditie zonder publieke vraag, een conditie met een zekere publieke vraag en een conditie met een onzekere publieke vraag. Er werd verwacht dat de publieke vraag als focal point zou dienen voor de coöperatiebeslissingen. De resultaten laten zien dat de publieke vraag in dit onderzoek geen invloed lijkt te hebben op de coöperatiebeslissingen. Ook is gebleken dat de publieke vraag geen invloed lijkt te hebben gehad op de verwachtingen die mensen hebben van de bijdragen anderen. Deze bevindingen komen dus niet overeen met wat er werd verwacht op basis van voorgaand onderzoek. Dit onderzoek kan desalniettemin dienen als informatiebron voor vervolgonderzoek naar de publieke vraag in sociale dilemma’s en het afwenden van collectieve rampen.Show less

The study also examines the influence of the...Show moreThe current study examines whether a public demand (for personal sacrifices) can serve as a focal point for coordinating cooperative decisions. The study also examines the influence of the uncertainty of public demand and the social value orientation of an individual on these cooperative decisions. The public demand in the current study simulates the threat of a potential collective disaster. In this study, a Public Goods Game and two variants of this game are used, the certain and uncertain Public Account Games. It was expected that there would be more cooperation in a situation with public demand and certain public demand, compared to no and uncertain public demand. Contrary to the expectations, the results indicated that adding public demand, both certain and uncertain, to the games does not affect cooperative decisions much. Also, in the certain public demand condition, tacit coordination through fairness rules was expected. However, the results show that there is no link between public demand as a focal point and the use of fairness rules. This finding implies that in situations with a public demand, the social value orientation of an individual is not relied upon, nor are cooperative decisions coordinated by applying fairness rules. In situations without public demand, the social value orientation of an individual turns out to be leading. The discussion outlines the implications for these findings and provides suggestions for future research.Show less
Most collaborative situations are characterized by a ‘public demand’ of personal sacrifices to serve the collective needs, where there is often a choice to be made to either serve your personal...Show moreMost collaborative situations are characterized by a ‘public demand’ of personal sacrifices to serve the collective needs, where there is often a choice to be made to either serve your personal needs or the collective needs. In this study it will be investigated if the public demand can drive people to coordinate their cooperation decisions and how this will be influenced by the environment uncertainty and social value orientation. This will be tested in one experiment with three different conditions: a public goods game without a public demand, a public account game with a certain public demand and a public account game with an uncertain public demand. In those three conditions the participants have to decide how much they will contribute to the collective account. Although we expected the public demand to be a coordination point for cooperation decisions, where people would use a rule of equity, this is not in line with what was found in the results. In situations with a public demand people do not act in line with their social value orientation, but which principle participants did use to coordinate the cooperation decisions hasn’t been found in this study. Environmental uncertainty also seems to be irrelevant in the process of making cooperation decisions, which was against our expectations as well. The social value orientation does seem to have an influence. Pro-socials cooperate more than pro-selfs do, especially in situations with a certain public demand. In situations with an uncertain public demand the gap in cooperation between pro-socials and pro-selfs narrowed.Show less
