This is also most certainly the case...Show moreThe global African diaspora has a significant potential to help develop their countries of origin through the use of remittances and knowledge acquired abroad. This is also most certainly the case for the diaspora of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who can use the finances and knowledge acquired in Europe to help the development of their home country. This research aims to explore the activities as well as the obstacles while sending remittances of the Congolese diaspora in Europe and Western Europe in particular because the diaspora communities are considerably larger in this area than elsewhere in Europe. Using academic literature and reports from government and non-governmental organisations, this research will use a qualitative thematic analysis to explore how the Congolese diaspora remits finances and goods to the DRC. Based on these sources, it can be seen that the Congolese diaspora generally remits a significant amount, between 40 and 60 percent, of their income to households in the DRC. These households often depend on between 80 to 100 percent of their income on these remittances. Remittances are mostly spent on personal consumption and are rarely used for investments or development purposes. This is mostly due to the fact that investing in the DRC is seen as a high-risk decision with a weak return on investment and the fact that the Congolese government makes it challenging for the diaspora to invest due to citizenship issues, corruption and complicated bureaucratic procedures. The diaspora is willing to invest in the DRC but their efforts should be facilitated to actually contribute to the development of the country.Show less

This paper focuses on finding out the impact of the sanctions placed on the Afghan country and society because of the Taliban’s re-entry into power. The method used for this research was a qualitative case study. This was done based on secondary sources concerning Afghanistan's history and contemporary events. Analysis of these sources showed the changing heart of America’s way of tackling these crises with a positive future perspective on handling these humanitarian crises. This research showed changing attitudes concerning the trade and official business with organisations deemed as terrorists; adversely, these changes will be seen in the future as current events are still largely influenced by the past notion of handling these humanitarian issues.Show less

Afghanistan humanitarian crisis in one of the worst worldwide, with over 90% of the population living on the poverty line. Due to the country's political shift, this research is relevant to understand the current dynamics of Afghanistan's humanitarian crisis. This paper uses a qualitative approach to researching the humanitarian assistance of the Afghan Diaspora due to a lack of funding, time, and the inability to collect primary data. This paper highlights that the Afghan Diaspora has a strong connection to their home country, which is displayed in their actions to fight of the humanitarian crisis. This paper highlights three main ways in which the Diaspora is able to assist, which are remittances, online activism and Afghan led NGOs. The Afghan Diaspora has a significant role in the humanitarian crisis, as remittances made up to 4.1% of the countries GDP. NGOs provided crucial safe places and distributed humanitarian aid, and the Afghan Diaspora forms in the online space a Digital Diaspora which organizes themselves, collect funds and spreads awareness about the humanitarian crisis. However, the Diasporas influence is limited, as the current political leaders in Afghanistan are the Taliban. The Taliban worsen the humanitarian crisis for the whole population to their own benefit, and are unaffected by the Diasporas opinions, or efforts, as they govern the country with their own ideology Thus, the current role of the Afghan Diaspora is mainly to inform and spread awareness, provide humanitarian aid, and organize themselves in NGOs to support their people.Show less

This is done by answering the following research question “In what ways do...Show moreThis paper explores ways in which diaspora communities play a role in the spread of terrorism to Western countries. This is done by answering the following research question “In what ways do diaspora communities play a role in the propagation of terrorism within Western countries?”. This question is researched through the use of a secondary qualitative content analysis. In order to explore and answer the question in depth the distinction of various chapter topics is made. Chapter 1, takes a closer look at the case study of the Paris Attacks in 2015, to analyse the involvement of diaspora groups in the context of a terrorist attack. While combining it with the problem of migration which identifies some indirect roles that diaspora communities play in the propagation of terrorism. Chapter 2, focuses on social media and recruitment and their impact on diaspora communities, by exploring the vulnerability they create for such communities. Lastly Chapter 3, focuses on the interactions of diaspora communities with Western countries. It further looks at diasporas’ (migrants) lack of ability to properly integrate in their host countries (Western countries), leading to diasporas playing a more important role in the spread of terrorism. This chapter also looks at the specific behaviours that diasporas display which impact the role they play, such as the intentional funding and support of terrorist groups. All these chapters are used to come to the conclusion that there are many indirect and direct pushing factors which lead the diasporas to play a role in the propagation of terrorism in Western countries.Show less
