Virginia, as a Southern state, did experience a moment where slavery was questioned. This questioning mounted in the 1782 Virginia Manumission Law. This thesis investigates how Virginia dealt with the question of slavery in the Revolutionary Era.Show less

Although this movement promised radical and lasting change in American society, much of the activists' efforts lacked this power. In contemporary history, this relative failure is blamed on various external factors. This thesis looks at the "Marcus Garvey Must Go Campaign" which was the result of a conflict between black nationalist Marcus Garvey and socialists A. Philip Randolph and Chandler Owen. By analyzing the feud, it is argued that interpersonal conflicts, instead of external factors, came to determine the movement and contributed to its weakening.Show less

This thesis examines the way these factors influenced the formation of a social and cultural group identity. The story told by newspaper articles and advertisements, slave narratives, travel accounts, wellfare petitions and city censuses and ordinances, is one of divisive laws and general disobedience of these laws, especially where race was concerned.Show less

Show less

Show less

Although much attention has been given to sensational and bloody slave resistance such as Nat Turner’s Rebellion and more recent scholarship has focused on “everyday resistance,” this paper attempts to bridge the gap between the two as poisoning is simultaneously violent yet hidden. While previous scholars have given some study to eighteenth-century poisoning, the nineteenth century is perhaps of more interest as advances in forensics and the rise of paternalism created an environment vastly different from, and in many ways more conducive to, poisoning than that found in the previous century. To try to gain a more complete understanding of poison practices this paper presents cases that involve slaves of different genders, occupations, and ages. Contrary to some historians, this paper presents poisoning in the context of its practicality and is critical of the view of poison being spiritually tied to Africa; as such, this paper explores the many varieties of poisons slaves utilized. Using newspaper articles and other primary sources, this paper dissects the poisoning practices of slaves as well as the white reactions to it.Show less

Show less

Whereas most academic studies of the genre have focused on testing and contesting negative stereotyping of the music by approaching the genre as a cultural and political product with deep roots in African-American history and culture, this study focuses on the public reactions that emerged against the genre as well as the national discourses that ensued. An extensive analysis of the treatment of those stereotypes and characteristics most commonly ascribed to gangsta rap in scholarly research and anti-gangsta rap campaigns, this study constructs a better understanding of the way gangsta rap was defined by its mainstream opponents (black and white), what its societal positioning was in an era of increasing poverty and tension in disadvantaged neighborhoods, and why the genre was considered so controversial. Additionally, the public discussion of gangsta rap is linked to the concurrent public discussion of crime, African-American youth and economically disenfranchised neighborhoods, which offers interesting new insights into the problematic stereotyping of these subjects in American society.Show less
