Bij laag angstigen is dit verband tegengesteld. Dit onderscheid is maar in een klein aantal studies onderzocht. Er bestaan problemen met de betrouwbaarheid van de meetinstrumenten die attentional threat bias (ATB) meten. Een verbeterde methode van de dual-probe task is ontwikkeld om ATB te meten. De onderzoeksvraag luidt: Is deze nieuwe methode een betrouwbare maat voor ATB en kunnen eerdere bevindingen van relaties tussen trait anxiety en aandachtsbias worden gerepliceerd? We verwachtten een negatieve correlatie tussen de mate van angstigheid en een aandachtsbias naar hoge dreiging. Methoden: Bij 48 participanten (37♀; 11♂; Leeftijd: 18-26 jaar) is de State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) afgenomen. Daarna hebben zij twee maal met een tussenpoos van 7-9 dagen de dual-probe task uitgevoerd. Gelijktijdig werden 2 stimuli getoond, bestaande uit neutrale, mild- en hoog dreigende afbeeldingen. De twee stimuli werden opgevolgd door een target letter die geïdentificeerd moest worden door de participanten. Resultaten: Participanten met een hogere STAI-t score hadden een grotere aandachtsbias naar zowel milde als hoge dreiging. De test-hertest betrouwbaarheid en interne consistentie waren hoog. Conclusie: Deze nieuwe methode is een betrouwbare en valide maat voor ATB. Om conclusies te kunnen trekken over de invloed van de mate van dreiging op de relatie tussen trait anxiety en ATB zal verder onderzoek moeten worden uitgevoerd, waarin andere stimuli en stimuli combinaties worden aangeboden en met een meer diverse mate van trait anxiety in de steekproefpopulatie.Show less

Measuring AB...Show moreBackground: Attentional bias for threat is an evolutionary beneficial reaction. Disproportionate attention to threats causes unnecessary suffering and has an impact on quality of life. Measuring AB for threat turns out to be problematic due to consistently low internal consistency of the available tasks. The commonly used Dot Probe task was adjusted in this research in an attempt to solve the reliability problem of this task. Method: 56 participants carried out the Dual Dot Probe task consisting of 60 mildthreat/neutral and 60 high-threat/neutral pairs of stimuli with a set 500ms cue target delay. An one-sample t-test was used to measure the proportion of attentional bias of participants and a split-half reliability analysis was used to determine the internal consistency of the task. Results: Data of 49 participants was analysed. No evidence of attentional bias was found for either mild or high threat stimuli. Internal consistency scores of .95 for mild and .98 for high threat suggested promising measurements of the task. Discussion: This study showed no attentional bias to mild or high threat with the Dual Dot Probe task possibly due to non-anxious characteristics of the sample or due to the cue target delay of the stimuli presented. The task did have a satisfying internal consistency. These findings suggest that future studies should investigate the value of the Dual Dot Probe task, focussing on anxious individuals and shorter cue target delay of the stimuli.Show less

The classical dot-probe task has been the golden standard of measuring selective attention based on variations in reaction times (RT) due to bottom-up saliency. In recent decades, concerns have grown over this task's reliability, partly due to statistical concerns over its indexing method and because it fails to account for top-down behavioral strategies that circumvent bottom-up attentional capture. This pilot study tested the novel Parallel Target Attention Task (PATAT) assessing attentional biases towards novel stimuli, as it aims to overcome these shortcomings. The task measured participant’s responses to two target stimuli presented in proximity to a familiar and a novel stimulus. An attentional bias was then calculated as a straightforward sum of participant responses to novel stimuli. By contrasting images of faces and natural scenes, we examined whether a bias for novelty is category specific. Last but not least, we investigated whether people who display higher levels of Behavioral Inhibition (BI), pay more attention to novel stimuli. The task was able to measure an attention bias toward novelty in the majority of participants but fell short on replicating a category-dependent bias. Also, contrary to our hypothesis that novel stimuli elicit more bottom-up attentional capture in such participants, data showed the opposite trend, consistent with the observation that such individuals generally avoid novel experiences. Theoretical and methodological implications of the results are discussed.Show less
