Objective: The objective of this research is gaining an insight into the relationship between emotional regulation and externalizing behavioural problems in children with ASD and ADHD in ages from 4 to 18 years. Method: The research subjects are children aged between 4 and 18 years with and without ASD and ADHD. They are children from special and regular education and those who receive guidance at a healthcare facility. The children’s parents have completed the Social Emotional Questionnaire (SEV) and the Emotional Intelligence Quotient (EIQ). Results: The study comprised 195 children of which 108 boys and 87 girls, of which 115 children who did not have a disorder, 33 children with ASD and 47 children with ADHD. Children with ASD and ADHD display more externalizing behavioural problems than children without a disorder and children with ADHD display more externalizing behavioural problems than children with ASD. Children with ASD and ADHD also display deficiencies in terms of regulating emotions compared to children without a disorder. The type of developmental disorder makes no difference. Conclusions: Children with ASD have typically problems in managing emotions and this is linked to age. Children with ADHD have typically problems in regulating emotions. In addition children with ADHD display externalizing behavioural problems. Children without any disorders display a good emotional regulation. For a part of these children this goes hand in hand with delinquent behaviour. This study has dealt with externalizing problem behavior as a whole. There is a possibility that there are differences between antisocial and aggressive behaviour. Future research can focus on this.Show less

Show less

In this study it is hypothesized that such skills related to emotional intelligence are less well developed in children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD)/Conduct Disorder (CD). By means of a questionnaire, completed by parents, data was collected concerning the emotional intelligence of children in The Netherlands. The subjects in this study are 290 children in the age four to 18 years (M=10.80; SD=3.46). The levels of the emotional intelligence related skills of the four following groups were mutually compared: children with ASD, children with ODD/CD, children with both ASD and ODD/CD and typically developing children. Comparisons were controlled for developmental age (4-to-11-years/12-to-18-years) and gender (boys/girls) of the children. Findings showed that children with ASD and/or ODD/CD have lower levels of emotional intelligence than typically developing children. Their ability to recognize, regulate and apply emotions is less well developed. A mutual comparison of developmental disorders showed that children with only ODD/CD recognize emotions better than children with only ASD and children with both ASD and ODD/CD, while children with only ASD regulate emotions better than children with ODD/CD and children with both ODD/CD and ASD. Children with only ODD/CD are better in applying emotions than children with only ASD. No differences were found between the younger and older children, nor were any differences found between boys and girls. The lack of emotional intelligence related skills found in this study can partly explain the social problems children with ASD and/or ODD/CD experience in society. To improve the social functioning clinicians must take the specific skill deficits reported in this study into account while designing treatment plans for these children.Show less

These traits are age, gender and co morbid social-emotional developmental disorder. This study contains 203 participations in the age four till twelve year, with 51 participants diagnosed with an ASD. The parents filled out two questionnaires: the vragenlijst Emotionele Intelligentie Quotient and the Sociaal Emotionele Vragenlijst. The results of this study were that there is a strong relationship between emotional intelligence (and the three dimensions) and an ASD. Age and gender are not associated with that relationship. The results of the co morbid social emotional disorders is that these disorders are associated with the relationship, except for the dimension 'recognition of emotions'. Shortcomings with that dimension are only caused by ASD. The shortcomings with 'regulation of emotions' are caused by a combination of an ODD/CD and an anxiety- and mood disorders; the shortcomings of 'handle with emotions' are caused by a combination of an ASD and an anxiety- and mood disorders; and the shortcomings in the emotional intelligence are caused by the combination of an ASD, an ODD/CD and an anxiety- and mood disorders. This study also found that children with an ASD and an anxiety- or mood disorder have the largest shortcomings in the emotional intelligence and the three dimensions, which makes that a group that needs more attention with treatment.Show less

The study examined on which domains of psychosocial behavior children in the age 4 to 18 years old with an ASS and/or a mental retardation show deficiencies in comparison with normally developing children. The study contains a cross-sectional research design. The parents were asked to fill in the Questionnaire Psychosocial Skills (VPV) on the Internet about their child. The sample consisted of 417 Dutch school children, including 235 boys (56.4%) and 182 girls (43.6%). The results of the study showed that children with an ASS and/or a mental retardation compared to the children without a developmental disorder show a distinct disadvantage in terms of the relational and affective skills, self-management and self-consciousness. The trial also found that children with a mental retardation show more psychosocial skills compared to children with an ASS and children with an ASS and a mental retardation. The research also show that children in the age group of 12 to 18 years do have more psychosocial skills than children in the age group of 4 to 11 years. Girls in the age group of 4 to 11 years do have more relational en affective skills than boys. Boys do have better psychosocial skills in the age group of 12 to 18 years than the girls. The results of the present study show the importance of detecting deficits in the development of psychosocial skills of children with an ASS and/or a mental retardation, so that the children can receive an appropriate assistance.Show less

Show less

When juveniles have psychosocial skill deficits this can lead to problems in school, peer relations and leisure activities. This study has examined if juveniles with an anxiety disorder and/or depression have psychosocial skill deficits and what role age and gender have on this. This study has a cross-sectional descriptive research design. Parents were asked to fill out the Social Emotional Questionnaire (SEV) and the Questionnaire Psychosocial Skills (VPV) about their child. The sample consisted of 584 Dutch juveniles in the age of 4 to 18 (M =11.73, sd = 3.55), with 41% of them being girls and 59% boys. The findings show that juveniles with an anxiety disorder and/or depression have more psychosocial skill deficits in contrast to juveniles without these disorders. The interactive skills are the most impaired. Findings also show that there are no significant differences in psychosocial functioning between children with either an anxiety disorder, a depression, or children that have both an anxiety disorder and a depression. There is no effect on psychosocial skills, as a result of age and gender. The findings of this study suggest that an early detection of psychosocial skill deficits in juveniles is of great importance to prevent anxiety disorders and/or a depression. It’s also important to detect and target psychosocial skill deficits in juveniles with an anxiety disorder and/or depression because this can define the course of their disorder and prevent relapses.Show less

This depression could be a multiple disability for this youth with autism. The youth with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and depression can have more limits in daily functioning, in comparison to youth with only an Autism Spectrum Disorder. It’s important to know at which aspects in daily functioning the youth with both disorders have the greatest limits. Because if these aspects are known, the youth can be supported at these aspects. This results in the following question: In which degree do Dutch children and youth from 4 to 18 years with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and an depression have limits in their adaptive skills? The level of the youth with both disorders are compared with the youth with autism, the youth with a depression and with the youth without psychopathology on four adaptive skills; contact with other children; contact with parents, adults and authority; school, work and future and the adaptive skill autonomy. This research with 635 participants shows that there’s a difference between youth with both disorders and youth with an Autism Spectrum Disorder on the adaptive skill autonomy. Youth with both disorders and youth with only a depression differ on the adaptive skill contact with other children. These results indicate that youth with both disorders mainly have a multiple disability at the adaptive skill autonomy. Youth with both disorders need support to improve their level of this adaptive skill.Show less

Parents were asked to complete two online questionnaires: the ‘Sociaal Emotionele Vragenlijst’ and the ‘vragenlijst Adaptieve Vaardigheden Jeugdigen’. Social competencies that were analyzed were ‘interaction with peers’, ‘interaction with parents, adults and authority’, and ‘autonomy and self-steering’. Results indicated that children diagnosed with developmental psychopathology differed significantly from the children without any disorders. Children with ADHD, and children with ASD scored significantly different on social competencies ‘interaction with peers’ and ‘autonomy’, but were similar on ‘interactions with parents, adults and authority’ and ‘self-steering’. No significant differences based on age and sex were found among the groups. Children with ADHD, and children with ASD benefit from interventions aimed at the development of social competencies, since these competencies lead to a better quality of life.Show less

Show less

The sample consisted of parents of children aged 4-12 years (Mage 8.58 years; SD = 2.26). In the study two questionnaires were used; the ‘Adaptieve Vragenlijst voor Jeugdigen’ (AVJ) to measure the general adaptive skills in children, and the Social Emotional Questionnaire (SEV) to measure disorder symptoms. Results showed lowe adaptive scores of children with ASD and/or comorbid ADHD or ODD-CD on the AVJ-subscales a. relation with peers, b. relation with parents, c. focus on school, work and future, and d. self-direction, when compared to normally developing children. Regardless of comorbidity, the skills that were the severest impaired in children with autism were related to competently and maintaining relationships with peers and recognizing emotions in peers. Competently maintaining relationships with adults is the least impaired skill in children with autism, meaning they can flexibly handle contacts with parents, teachers and authorities. Age, gender and cultural background did not interact with these differences and similarities. In children with autism the adaptive skills accounted for respectively 44% of the explained variance of social functioning as measured with the SEV. This implicates that there are possible other factors associated to the disorder related adaptive behaviors of children with ASD. Further research should focus on intelligence as a contributing variable, for IQ seems to be a strong predictor of adaptive behavior. And as the grading of adaptive behavior is influenced by the expectations of the people who grade them, an implication would be that questionnaires should be completed by teachers as well as by parents.Show less

Show less

Show less
