This evaluation is done by analyzing archaeological interpretations of these...Show moreThis thesis evaluates the androcentric bias in archaeological interpretations of Paleolithic hunter-gatherers. This evaluation is done by analyzing archaeological interpretations of these Paleolithic peoples through three theoretical lenses. These lenses are biological essentialism, male generic language, and visual representation. The thesis examines the link between androcentrism and these concepts. In the case study, one of the most impactful theories in the field of hunter-gatherer studies is discussed, the “Man the Hunter” theory. The case study reviews recent research that has contradicted many of the findings from the theory. Next, the case study uses the three theoretical lenses to analyze interpretations of Paleolithic hunter-gatherers. The influence of these concepts on the archaeological interpretations is examined. From this, methods to prevent the influence of androcentrism and potential future research is envisioned. This thesis argues for a re-evaluation of possible androcentric biases in archaeological interpretations. It emphasizes the need for objectivity, and awareness of a biological essentialist view of gender, gendered language, and biases in visual representation.Show less
