Yet there is...Show moreBackground: Psoriasis is one of the most common chronic skin disorders and is known for its substantial psychosocial impact. Stigma from the general public plays a significant role. Yet there is limited knowledge and research done regarding determinants and mechanisms that explain or predict these stigmatizing attitudes from the general public. Potentially the behavioural immune system (BIS) plays a role. Aims: The aim of the study is to gain insights into factors of the BIS that potentially influence stigmatizing attitudes of the general public, to facilitate the development of an appropriate intervention targeting the reduction of such attitudes. Methods: A sample of 150 participants between the age of 19 and 73 (M= 31.4, SD=13.1) where included. They filled in an online questionnaire after reading a vignette about an encounter with a person with psoriasis. Questionnaires measured perceived vulnerability to disease, knowledge of psoriasis and the personality trait openness to experience. Results: There was no significant association found between higher levels of perceived vulnerability to disease and stigmatizing attitudes towards people with psoriasis (p=.23). Furthermore, neither openness to experience (p=.24) nor knowledge of psoriasis (p=.25) mediated this relationship. Notably, individuals with lower levels of knowledge about psoriasis displayed greater stigmatizing attitudes towards people with psoriasis (p=<.001). Discussion: It is therefore recommended to focus on increasing knowledge about psoriasis in future intervention development. Next to this it is recommended to further investigate if the BIS affects stigma towards people with psoriasis with other determinants and methods and to evoke stigma with visual cues.Show less

De impact...Show moreAchtergrond: Dit online-onderzoek onderzocht de mate van publiek stigma bij het beoordelen van een persoon met zichtbare psoriasissymptomen, met zelfbewustzijn als mogelijke voorspeller. De impact van publiek stigma kan leiden tot psychosociale gevolgen bij personen met psoriasis. De beperkte kennis hierover benadrukt de cruciale rol van dit onderzoek in het ontwikkelen van welzijn bevorderende interventies voor deze populatie. Methode: Participanten vanaf 18 jaar uit de Nederlandse bevolking (N = 121) werden willekeurig toegewezen aan videocondities met zichtbare of niet-zichtbare psoriasissymptomen. In dit onderzoek werden twee videovignetten, met bijbehorende vragenlijsten, met elkaar vergeleken. De mate van publiek stigma werd gemeten met de ‘Social Distancing Scale’ (SDS). Zelfbewustzijn werd gemeten met de ‘Self- Consciousness Scale’ (SCS). Resultaten: De paired samples t-test toonde aan dat publiek stigma significant hoger was wanneer de psoriasissymptomen zichtbaar waren (t (119) = 3.19; p = .002). Dit effect was echter klein, met een Cohen's d van .29. De meervoudige regressieanalyse toonde geen significante relatie tussen zelfbewustzijn en publiek stigma. De beta- coëfficiënten van privé-SCS (B = .05; p = .623) en publiek-SCS (B = -.08; p = .444) waren ook niet significant. Conclusies: Zichtbare psoriasissymptomen wekken meer publiek stigma op bij het beoordelen van een persoon met zichtbare psoriasissymptomen. Gerichte interventies voor deze populatie zijn noodzakelijk om de psychosociale impact hiervan te reduceren. Ondanks de niet-significante voorspellende rol van zelfbewustzijn, benadrukt dit onderzoek de behoefte aan specifiekere meetinstrumenten en meer toekomstig onderzoek naar de voorspellers van publiek stigma ten opzichte van personen met psoriasis.Show less

However, in current literature, there is a lack of information on the...Show moreA growing number of studies report links between nonlinguistic rhythmic processing skills and linguistic abilities. However, in current literature, there is a lack of information on the relationship between rhythmic skills and reading ability in non-clinical samples. In this experimental accelerated cohort-sequential longitudinal twin intervention study, reading ability is examined as a predictor for beat perception (the ability to perceive temporal regularity) and rhythm discrimination (the ability to remember and discriminate metrical structures) in early development. A sample of twins (N = 112; Mage = 13.28 years; 45.5% men) completed multiple aptitude tests measuring their rhythm skills and their reading ability. Through statistical analyses, a moderate Pearson correlation was found between beat perception and rhythm discrimination. Furthermore, mixed linear models showed that reading ability predicted rhythm discrimination, whereas it did not predict beat perception, suggesting differential maturational pathways of both rhythm discrimination and beat perception. This study contributes to a more thorough understanding of the development of rhythm perception in children, and provides normative data of a non-clinical research population. Moreover, we now know that musical rhythm interventions promoting reading development should focus on rhythm STM, as opposed to beat perception training.Show less
