To understand why JB symptoms...Show moreJob Burnout (JB) is a demanding syndrome that leaves employees exhausted and dealing with cognitive and emotional problems, with symptoms lasting up to 10 years. To understand why JB symptoms pertain for so long, different resource theories were integrated to investigate the impact of JB on an individual gain process between job resources, personal resources, and recovery gained through physical exercise. It was predicted that skill discretion (SD), a common job resource, increases the personal resource self-efficacy (SE) which, in turn, enhances the recovery gained from physical exercise. This gain process was proposed to be dampened by JB, leaving employees with higher JB symptoms in a less advantageous position for resource gain as compared to those with lower symptoms. Using longitudinal data across three workweeks, self-report questionnaires were administered among full-time employees (N = 163). Although correlations revealed that the proposed relationships were found at specific weeks, hierarchical regression analyses revealed no across-time relationships, meaning no weekly gain process could be identified between SD, SE, and recovery gained through exercise. In addition, against expectations, no negative impact of JB on the gain process was found. Thus, the exact relationships between job resources, personal resources, recovery gained through exercise, and JB remain unclear. Future research is needed to further investigate these relationships preferably by using a different time lag than one week and by applying different roles of personal resources within the Job Demands-Resources framework.Show less

It also inquired into whether sensory processing sensitivity moderates the strength of this effect, and whether emotional regulation mediates it. 134 participants were randomly assigned across three conditions: exercising, puzzling (our active control), and rear (our passive control). Before randomization, all participants underwent a negative-emotion induction task (an autobiographical recall task), which homogeneously reduced their level of positive emotions. Afterwards, they got to engage in their respective task for 30 minutes, while reflecting on the negative episode they had just brought back to mind. Participants in the exercise condition cycled on a at a self-chosen moderate intensity; those in the puzzling condition tried to assemble as far as possible a 1000-pieces puzzle; those in the rest condition sat on a chair. Both before and after their task, all participants filled up a questionnaire in which we measured their levels of positive emotion, sensory processing sensitivity, and emotional regulation strategies. The results were that exercise significantly increased positive emotions compared to rest (p = .002, 95% CI = .31, 1.68) but not when compared to puzzling (p = .98, 95% CI = -.63, .74). Contrary to expectations, emotional regulation did not mediate such effect (95% CI = -.42, .003 and 95% CI = -.26, .09), nor did sensory processing sensitivity moderate its strength (b = .02, SE = .61, p = .97 and b = .56, SE = .61, p = .37). Hence, exercise (and puzzling) can serve as a useful intervention to increase positive emotions subsequent to exposure to a stressor, and this effect is valid for all individuals independently of their degree of sensory processing sensitivity.Show less

Daarnaast bleek dat...Show moreIn 2021 bleek dat maar liefst zestien procent van de werknemers in Nederland kampt met burn-out klachten. Dit gaat samen met een hogere mate van verzuim en daarmee hoge kosten. Daarnaast bleek dat vrouwen vaker kampen met burn-out klachten. Vele onderzoeken bevestigen de positieve resultaten van sport en beweging op het voorkomen en verminderen van burn-out klachten. Echter is het door onder andere vermoeidheid bij een burn-out, lastig om sportieve activiteiten te initiëren. Door deze fysieke inactiviteit blijft juist deze vermoeidheid in stand. Dit onderzoek bekijkt of mensen die kampen met een burn-out gemotiveerd kunnen worden door playful sport design in te zetten. Deze manier van sport benadert training op een speelse manier door proactief plezierige en competitieve elementen toe te voegen. Door middel van een dagboekstudie is data verzameld van N = 118 respondenten, verdeeld over vier weken. De vragen gingen in op de mate van burn-out, de mate van ervaren PSD en in hoeverre de respondent uitkijkt naar een volgende training als indicator voor sportmotivatie. Er bleek een significant positief verband tussen de mate waarin iemand PSD toepast in een training, en de mate waarin iemand uitkijkt naar een volgende sportsessie. Hoe speelser iemand sport, hoe meer diegene uitkijkt naar een de sportsessies in de komende week. Daarnaast bleek deze relatie significant sterker voor mensen met een hoge mate van burn-out klachten dan voor mensen met een lage mate van burn-out klachten. Burn-out blijkt dus een modererend effect te hebben op dit verband, mits er gecorrigeerd is voor geslacht en leeftijd. Mensen die een hoge mate van burn-out klachten ervaren, hebben dus mogelijk meer baat bij sporten op een speelse en competitieve manier. Echter moeten de resultaten met voorzichtigheid worden geïnterpreteerd doordat de steekproef klein is, en er gebruik is gemaakt van zelfrapportages. Hoewel er meer onderzoek nodig is naar dit verband in de praktijk suggereren deze resultaten dat er mogelijk veel te behalen valt op het gebied van sportmotivatie door playful sport design bij mensen die kampen met burn-out symptomen.Show less

Ik voorspelde dat sportintensiteit een positieve relatie heeft met self-efficacy en self-efficacy een positieve relatie met leerpotentieel op de werkvloer. Er werd verondersteld dat de positieve relatie tussen sportintensiteit en het leerpotentieel op de werkvloer wordt gemedieerd door self-efficacy. Om deze hypothesen te testen werd een vragenlijst, elke week voor drie weken lang, ingevuld door typische volwassenen die minimaal 32 uur in de week werken. De hiërarchische regressie analyses laten zien dat één van de drie voorspellingen bevestigd is. De gemiddelde sportintensiteit van week 1 brengt geen verandering teweeg in de mate van self-efficacy van week 1 naar week 2. Self-efficacy, gemeten in week 2, heeft wel significante invloed op het leerpotentieel op de werkvloer. Self-efficacy en leerpotentieel op de werkvloer blijken constante variabelen over de tijd te zijn. Wanneer er niet wordt gecontroleerd voor een eerdere week bestaat er wel een significante positieve relatie tussen de drie variabelen. En self-efficacy medieert dan wel de positieve relatie tussen sportintensiteit en leerpotentieel. Er wordt beschreven hoe deze resultaten bijdragen aan de wetenschappelijke literatuur en werknemers en werkgevers handvat kunnen bieden de werkervaring positief te veranderen. Tot slot worden er aanbevelingen genoemd voor vervolgonderzoek.Show less

Hence, modelling the prevalence and...Show moreAerosols are tiny particles of various kinds and compositions suspended in the atmosphere, some of which have a critical, adverse impact on public health. Hence, modelling the prevalence and distribution of these separate types is vital for giving shape to informed policy on air quality. In this work, methods are described to identify clusters of similar aerosol type mixtures in the Earth’s atmosphere on a global scale, on the basis of microphysical data from the space-borne remote sensing instrument POLDER-3. We report an unsupervised learning approach using the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) and k-means clustering, which allows for clustering without a priori assumptions on existing aerosol types, nature or prevalence. Two methods are introduced to stabilize these clustering algorithms over multiple equal runs to manage their local optima convergence property: the k-means nstart option is extended to the SOM and a set-up is given for a new method, Expectation-Maximization-centered Mahalanobis clustering (EMcMc). A (repeated) v-fold cross-validation framework is presented to find the optimal number of clusters k in the data by means of cluster validation measures, currently including Prediction Strength and validated variants of the Silhouette Width. Using a separate test set, the method can be used to optimize a generic k, countering overfitting. A novel validation index is developed which extends the Silhouette Width to data sets with many observations (large N): the Gridded Silhouette Width. All described methods are implemented in the statistical software package R and shown to work for simulated examples, originating from scaled Gaussian distributions with varying degrees of overlap. Analysis of the POLDER-3 data indicated that using only four variables, 8 clusters can be found in a stable and reproducable fashion. The Silhouette indices did not appear to perform well for data so widely dispersed as here. The found clusters were characterized based on their variable distributions and geographical occurence, which proved to be feasible and meaningful for real-life interpretations. The proposed aerosol types were dust, marine, urban-industrial, smoke and mixtures thereof.
