Dutch authorities are concerned that they might commit terrorist attacks in the Netherlands upon...Show moreA growing number of Dutch young adults have entered Syria to fight alongside Islamic radical groups. Dutch authorities are concerned that they might commit terrorist attacks in the Netherlands upon their return. To prevent others from going there, a deep understanding of the underlying reasons leading to radicalization is required. By analyzing radicalization literature and reports on the development of Moroccan and Turkish Dutch Muslims in the Netherlands, this study examines these causal factors. It argues that poor integration and low socio-economic status have caused discrimination and social exclusion of the Moroccan and Turkish Dutch youth. As a result of globalization, relative deprivation and a negative stance towards Muslims by Dutch society and politics, those susceptible may come to embrace the jihadi-Salafi ideology. Since this ideology legitimizes violent behavior against non-believers, going to Syria provides a plausible way out.Show less
