Show less

By using LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), which are detailed height maps, height differences in the landscape are clearly visible and unnatural, man-made changes can be recognized. From behind the desk, volunteers can look for traces from the World War (II) on cut-outs of this LiDAR data. The three categories that are searched for during this project are: bomb craters, trenches and ammunition depots. World War II heritage is a sensitive heritage and must be treated with respect. The aim of this research is therefore to gain an idea of what measures have been taken (or are necessary) to publish and/or present these war remains to the public in an ethical and responsible way. This then leads to a series of recommendations for a public presentation of the results of the Scars of War project. The Second World War is a period that has always been in the spotlight and is of interest to many people. World War II sites are not just historical locations where something happened that can be visited. They are locations where something also happens to us, as an audience, when it is visited. Heritage from the Second World War carries an extra layer of emotions and opinions and is therefore also referred to as 'Contested Heritage'. Reaching the public therefore often entails many difficulties. But nonetheless it is very important to inform the public about the subject. By keeping the public involved in archaeology and heritage from the World War II period, more support and appreciation is created. This period in history is relatively recent and so it may cause the public to feel a sense of responsibility. It is therefore often referred to as the Heritage Cycle. The public wants more than just to read or look at the results of an archaeological investigation, they want to be involved in the research. The aim of this thesis is to make a public presentation of the results of Scars of War. To this end, research has been done into the various possibilities of audience reach and how the digital world influences audience reach. Various aspects of public outreach are discussed, for example, it is made clear why public outreach is clear at all and what the influence of the public is on the heritage. During the research, a lot of comparative research was done and within the research many different cases of public outreach products and presentations were discussed in which the good and less good aspects of that specific form of public outreach are discussed. These findings are then summarized and translated into a series of recommendations for a public presentation for the Scars of War project.Show less

These coins are characterized by find location and low weight of less than 0.5 grams. Due to the fact that they lack comprehensible legends or bear ambiguous or degenerated ones it is difficult to date them or assign them to a known mint like Stavoren or Dokkum. Traditionally they have been separated into two groups: one showing a worldly ruler, and the other showing a cleric or bishop. Previous research has laid much emphasis on the deciphering of the legends, and discerned the name of a certain Otto on several types. However, while the “worldly” types appear to date slightly earlier, there appears to have been considerable overlap between the two. This indicates that the divide between the two types may not be as historically important as once thought. The fact that the name of this Otto appears in both groups argues against it being the name of the issuing authority at the time of striking. Important in researching this series of coins is the quick increase in reported finds. Metal detectors have become widely available to the general public, and databases such as NUMIS and PAN have been set up to register these new finds. The databases mentioned are freely accessible and have proven to be valuable tools in the field of archaeology and numismatics in particular. Newly discovered types and an increasing number of find locations provide relevant information for Dutch numismatists. Included in this thesis is an overview of the largest and most important hoards containing these anonymous Frisian pennies, as well as an overview of the various types considered “Frisian”. Of those types a database has been made containing over 250 individual pieces that have appeared in digitised public collections and databases, several private collections and certain European auctions. The find locations, weights and other characteristics of these examples have been noted down when available.Show less

After that, during the French occupation of Maastricht between 1673 and 1678, famous military engineer Sebastién le Prestre de Vauban made alterations to the fortifications of Maastricht. The events leading up to the siege, the siege itself and the aftermath of the siege are most intensively studied by historical sources. This results in the fact that the current state of spatial knowledge about these events is limited. This study aims to expand on the current state of knowledge about the preparations, execution and aftermath of the siege of Maastricht in 1673 by including cartographic and archaeological sources. By comparing these three types of sources, and investigating whether they confirm, complement or contradict each other, the current state of knowledge on the topic is expanded.Show less

Show less

Show less

Prince Maurits carried out reforms together with Willem Lodewijk. They studied sources from Classical Antiquity on, amongst others, Roman military strategies and the construction of Roman army camps. They used this knowledge as a source of inspiration and they applied many elements from the Roman army to the State army. For example, think of the introduction of command language. The most important introduction was the drill of soldiers, which required a lot of training and discipline. The introduction of training and discipline ensured that the State soldiers were well trained and that they knew better what do to during a combat. The result was that the State army won more regularly and that they could win in smaller units. Discipline therefore was very important in the reformed State army and that is why this research is also referred to as a discipline revolution. It is to be expected that these organizational reforms can also be recognized in State siege camps. Before the reforms were introduced, the State army camps had no fixed form, organized structure or fixed elements. Due to the introduction of discipline and changes in war strategy, it may be expected that changes have occurred within the camps of the State army. Many studies have been carried out in recent decades about the State army and the changes in their strategy, for example. However about the life of a State soldier (such as the food supply within the army) and how the structure of State siege camps changed after the introduction of the organizational reforms has hardly been researched. In this research, State army camps (before the organizational reforms) and State and Spanish siege camps (after the organizational reforms) are examined and compared with each other. The period after the Twelve Years' Truce (1621-1648) was chosen to study the State and Spanish siege camps. As already mentioned, it may be expected that State army camps differ from the later State siege camps in the implementation of organizational reforms. In addition, Spanish siege camps will not have a fixed structure or fixed elements, because during the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) no organizational reforms took place within the Spanish army. To compare this, historical (siege) maps have been analysed and in addition the archaeology of the (so far) only two archaeologically excavated State siege camps has been analysed. Additionally, the changes in the logistics of food supplies in the State army as a result of the organizational reforms are studied as well.Show less

The Byzantine and Sasanian empires had a complicated relationship, with continuing wars on one end, and dependence on trade on the other. The silk road was situated on Sasanian land, and Byzantium was forced to use the Sasanian empire as a middle man. The respective agricultures produced basic produce for the whole empires, but for exotic spices and herbs, the empires were dependent on the silk road. There is not much written on the Sasanian diet, but a few products are known to have been cultivated. Some sources give information on the extravagant diet of the nobility, which includes different vegetables, grains, fruits, spices, meats and sweets. In the last decades there has been more research on the Byzantine empire, which also included diet. Most information about the Byzantine diet comes from dietary handbooks and descriptions, most of which are written about Constantinople. It is possible that these sources are more about an ideal diet, than based on reality. The sources describe many different fruits, vegetables, spices, meats, fish and grains. This conveys the image of an extravagant and varied diet, but the results bone isotope analysis in Greece show dietary deficiencies. It seems that at least between the capitol and the province, there is a difference of availability of food. Comparing the two diets, there are some similarities, mostly when it comes to spices. Because there is not as much data on the Sasanian diet, there are more products that are known to have been present in Byzantium and not the Sasanian empire, than the other way around. When comparing both diets to the current Iranian diet, there seems to be a continuation of some of the Sasanian traditions. There also seem to be some similarities between the Byzantine diet and the current Iranian diet. To get a clear picture of the diet of the average citizen of the empires, not only the elite, more research is needed. For example, isotope analyses of different regions of the empire.Show less

The burial rituals for the barrow graves and the few flat graves that are found in the region are furthermore to a certain extent understandable for the archaeologists. After all, many inhabitants of Western Countries also bury their dead. A third element of the West-Frisian death rituals however, includes the distribution of separate human bones through the settlement. In this thesis, research is done according to the question of how the death rituals in eastern West-Frisia looked like during the Middle and Late Bronze Age. Thereby the focus will lie on this third element of human bones in the settlement contexts. For the answering of this question, a database was made which contains all Bronze Age human remains of West-Frisia that are found so far. Of these human remains several aspects were added to the database, including sex, age, dating, etc. Then with the help of these aspects, significant patterns were looked after. Remarkable was that the majority of the human remains from this database seemed to come from the settlements more often than from the barrows and flat graves. These human bones from the settlements almost always consisted of only skull fragments or long bones. Considering this, one could ask oneself whether this should not also be considered a regular death ritual in West-Frisia.Show less

[English version] In some publications considering The Hague (Den Haag) in the late middle ages and the modern period there mention of an opinon of the opposite between the wealth of inhabitants of and the poverty of inhabitants of peat. To which extent this ‘sand rich’ and ‘peat poor’ opposition is reflected by the distribution and the material of water sources (cisterns and wells) in the city centre of The Hague is researched in this thesis. This has been done by quantitative research and statistical tests on a database of 218 water sources in The Hague in the late middle ages and the modern period. Here a description is given of distribution of the number of water sources between peat and sand, the distribution of the number of water sources through time, possible explanations for it, the distribution of the number of water sources in sand and peat through time, de distribution of the number of wells between the used materials, the distribution of the number of wells between the used materials and between sand and peat through time, and the objections against the reliability of the research. If the historical expectation that the unwealthy in The Hague lived on peat and the wealthy on sand is correct, it is to be expected that there are no or less and cheaper (wooden) wells and no or less cisterns in peat and more, more expensive (brick/stone) wells and more cisterns sand. This is not the case however, Only the relatively large number of cisterns on sand, the relatively large share of completely brick/stone wells on sand and the relatively large number of brick/stone shaft linings in sand are in accordance with the research hypothesis. The presence of water sources in peat, and the presence of relatively more water sources in peat, the strong influnce of time period on the number of water sources, and the presence of relatively more wooden above ground structures on sand than on peat are not in accordance with the research hypothesis. The research hypothesis is therefore only partly supported by the results and partly contradicted. Possible explanations are that the image the data give is distorted and the historical expectation is correct, water sources don’t indicate wealth, the way in which water sources indicate status is more nuanced, or that the wealthy should be divided into more layers.Show less

During this period...Show moreThis BA thesis focusses on one aspect of the burial tradition of the late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age in the South of the Netherlands and adjacent Belgium (1100-500 B.C.). During this period of time, the vast majority of the population of North-western Europe was buried in large collective cemeteries; urnfields. Therefore, this period was also known as the Urnfield Period. The deceased were cremated and buried in small burial pits, with or without urns, to which small burial mounds and ring ditches were added. Nevertheless, in different locations, there are examples of burials in which the deceased were buried in much older burial mounds (secondary burials) or changes have been made to these burial mounds (modifications). This concerns an aberrant burial practice with re-use of burial monuments from a distant past. Although this phenomenon has been named in several publications, it lacked further analysis hitherto. This research, which is based on literature review, accommodates such analysis with a further categorization, with the underlying purpose to recover patterns. To achieve the recovery of patterns several things have been researched, among which are the type of burial mounds re-used, the manner in which they were heightened, expanded and cut through, the locations within the burial mounds where the deceased were buried, the type of grave goods that were present, the type of individuals that were buried and the correlation between them. In addition, the potential motivations for this phenomenon have been discussed, to which degree this corresponds with common burials in urnfields and whether this could have been a collective tradition. This has revealed a high degree of diversity in re-use, yet there appears to be indication of specific choices, and in particular two specific patterns have been revealed. Firstly, several individuals were potentially purposefully buried eccentrically within older burial mounds, whereas others were buried in the centre, disturbing the original graves. Therefore, in some cases, one could have been aware that people from a near or distant past were buried in these burial mounds. Secondly, the practice of secondary burials almost exclusively concerned female individuals; at least in the cases with sex estimations. Because this research was focused on aberrant burial practices, the amount number of available samples was, in fact, too small for definitive conclusions. Further research could be directed at the expansion of the research area (e.g. to Germany) and, if possible, to research the (osteological) “raw data” of sites with cases of re-use.Show less
