De laatste jaren wijzen studies in de antropologie uit dat de handelingen van mijnwerkers beter te verklaren zijn door goud te zien als een substantie in plaats van als een natuurlijke hulpbron....Show moreDe laatste jaren wijzen studies in de antropologie uit dat de handelingen van mijnwerkers beter te verklaren zijn door goud te zien als een substantie in plaats van als een natuurlijke hulpbron. Belangrijk verschil is dat goud als natuurlijke hulpbron uitsluitend wordt behandeld in het economische domein. Een substantie is echter gerelateerd aan de leefwereld van mensen en hierdoor afhankelijk van het domein een andere betekenis genereert. Ook dit onderzoek dat is uitgevoerd in een kleine mijn in het Noorden van Ghana toont aan dat mijnwerkers rationeel handelen echter op basis van andere gronden dan het nastreven van exploitatie van een natuurlijke hulpbron. Ook de handelingen rondom watergebruik in de kleinschalige goudmijnbouw wordt in verband gebracht met dit perspectief. Water en goud moeten beiden worden behandeld als een substantie met als gemeenschappelijke waarde dat goud en water beiden aan de aarde worden onttrokken.Show less

Whereas many hospices have a religious base, the foundation of a hospice on humanistic principles is a fairly unique phenomenon. The intended purpose of the humanistic base is to make everyone, both residents and volunteers, feel welcome in this hospice. However, the term humanism implies, from a philosophical point of view, a critical stance towards religious beliefs. Since Hospice Veerhuis does not make any value judgements regarding religion, it can be concluded that humanism merely serves as a method to create a neutral environment in which everyone can feel comfortable according to their own moral principles. The result is a highly diverse team of volunteers. The data demonstrate that the team of volunteers is made up of people with different motivations to become a hospice volunteer, varying ideas on death and dying, and religious and spiritual beliefs. Four volunteers serve as archetypes to demonstrate the high degree of diversity that exists within this hospice.Show less

They do this...Show moreThis study shows that Afrikaans speaking South African immigrants living in the Netherlands create a sense of home and belonging through a variety of products, activities and networks. They do this within the institutional framework, consisting of rules, regulations and constraints of the Netherlands. Like the respondent who smuggles in Grandpa powder, a headache powder used in South Africa, although EU regulations do not allow this. Blockages thus also exist after one has migrated, and are not only of influence during the process of migration from one place to another. Within the institutional framework of the Netherlands, Afrikaans speaking South Africans have found several ways to make use of products, activities and networks in their efforts to feel at ease.Show less

Het...Show moreMen beschouwt het vermogen om te communiceren vaak als evident. Wanneer we echter gaan praten met doven en slechthorenden merken we hoe zeer we een zintuig als ons gehoor moeten waarderen. Het verliezen van het gehoor, of het nu veel of weinig is, zal gevolgen hebben voor de communicatie met anderen, en dus voor de toegang tot sociale relaties, locaties en het vervullen van behoeften. Het missen van een communicatiemiddel zoals gehoor zorgt ervoor dat men nieuwe manieren moet zoeken om sociale relaties te kunnen onderhouden. Daarnaast zullen bepaalde locaties niet meer gemakkelijk of zelfs helemaal niet toegankelijk zijn. Dit alles heeft tot gevolg dat men niet meer in alle eigen behoeftes kan voorzien. Denk hierbij aan zoiets simpels als naar de favoriete muziek luisteren of tot het kunnen communiceren met een vriend enzovoorts. Of iemand nu doof of slechthorend wordt geboren of dit op latere leeftijd meemaakt, het zal hoe dan ook de persoon beperken in zijn of haar toegang.Show less

Tourists visit the Ju/'hoansi in order to experience their traditional culture. They can experience how the Ju/'hoansi do hunting and gathering, observe their traditional dances and do bushwalks with them. However, what effect does this have on the culture, and more specifically on its authenticity? What does it mean that many Ju/'hoansi are no longer living the traditional life? Are they still interested in their own traditional culture? These and other questions will be discussed in this thesis. In this thesis I have mainly focused at the perspectives and perceptions of the Ju/'hoansi themselves.Show less

Members of the NAC (Native American Church) have been fighting in...Show moreThe Lophophora williamsii or better known as the Peyote Cactus has been a point of controversy in American courts for decades. Members of the NAC (Native American Church) have been fighting in court for the right to use this cactus classified as a Schedule 1 substance in their Peyote ceremonies. The court cases had differing outcomes as result. Within this juridical debate there is a hegemonic biomedical bias in which Peyote is considered to be a health threatening drug. This is remarkable, because Peyote doesn’t seem to stimulate addiction. In contrary, it is used to ‘heal’ addictions. Within this debate there is a lack of an emic view. This emic view in itself is problematic as researching within the NAC is difficult. Additionally, the Peyote ceremony is seen in the court as a part of the traditional religion of the NAC. But when looking at Native American religion, the NAC is a relative newcomer originating in 1917. What is the role of anthropology in this debate and what can it do to deconstruct the misconceptions of Peyotism? In answering this question and in exploring the juridical debate and its misconceptions a literature research about Navajo Native Americans and Peyotism is used.Show less

Migrant children who are residing in Rosettenville have...Show moreMigrant children are an unexamined subject, even though they experience several interesting processes in adapting to a new society. Migrant children who are residing in Rosettenville have integrated well into the South African society and enjoy living in South Africa. The research showed a pattern among the migrant children which is connected with the relationship the children have with their country of origin. The children either choose to keep a connection with their home country or not to maintain a bond with their home country, which determines the way children acculturate in the society and develop a sense of belonging. Coherent to this is the division between home and school, whereby some children who value their home situation more, compared with children who are more interested in everything outside their home situation, including school, friends and the South African society. This again is related to the relationship the children have with their country or origin, whether they choose to value home or school. Even though they have migrated to a new country, the country of origin will always play a role in the lives of migrant children.Show less

Het seksueel geweld als onderdeel van de...Show moreIn deze studie naar de verklaringen en motivaties van daders van seksueel geweld in gewapend conflict, zullen verschillende theorieën worden besproken. Het seksueel geweld als onderdeel van de oorlog in voormalig Joegoslavië, en in het bijzonder in Bosnië-Herzegovina gedurende de jaren 1992 tot 1995, loopt als rode draad door deze scriptie heen. Deze theorieën vallen grofweg binnen twee disciplines: culturele antropologie en psychologie. De scriptie is opgedeeld in twee delen. Eerst is ingegaan op de gebruikte terminologie, het ontstaan van definities en een korte geschiedenis van het conflict in voormalig Joegoslavië. In deel twee van deze scriptie is het seksueel geweld als onderdeel van de oorlog geanalyseerd vanuit enerzijds cultureel antropologische perspectieven, waarin seksueel geweld als symbolische daad en als gesocialiseerd gedrag binnen een cultuur van oorlog wordt geanalyseerd, en anderzijds psychologische perspectieven, waarin seksuele lust als primair motief van seksueel geweld wordt gezien.Show less

Met name in Noord India worden aanzienlijk meer jongens geboren dan meisjes, waarbij deze ratio in sterke mate afwijkt van degene die elders in de wereld voorkomt. De algemeen geaccepteerde aanname is, dat de grote mate van ongelijkheid een gevolg is van sexe selectieve abortus, die mogelijk is geworden nadat sekse determinatie technieken (vruchtwaterpunctie, echoscopie) hun intrede hebben gedaan. In aansluiting daarop, suggereren onderzoekers dat er vaak sprake is van verwaarlozing van vrouwelijke baby’s en kleuters, waardoor het sterftecijfer onder meisjes hoger is dan dat onder jongens.Show less

These styles were most visible with immigrants, who migrated from small villages elsewhere in Mali to the capital, later in their life. During my research I found that the choice for education is indeed related to cultural style. Norms are highly valuable among the different styles. These norms influence the choice for a specific type of education for children.Show less
