According to the Unified Model of Task-specific Motivation (UMTM; De Brabander & Martens, 2014) one of the factors that leads to readiness for action is the perceived freedom of action. Stefanou et al. (2004) subdivide freedom of action into three different kinds, of which only the cognitive freedom of action leads to more psychological effort. Therefore, the goal of this intervention study was to determine if an intervention that supports the cognitive freedom of action in arithmetic class enhances the perceived cognitive freedom of action and readiness for action of students in Dutch vocational education. To examine this, the cognitive freedom of action and readiness for action of 75 students in three different classes are measured twice weekly, during eight weeks. In the fifth and sixth week, two classes (49 students) received an intervention to support cognitive freedom of action, the other class served as an active control. Multilevel analysis showed that in these two weeks the students in the intervention group perceived more cognitive freedom of action, but not more readiness for action than before and after the intervention. This change in cognitive freedom of action was not visible in the control group. This tells us the a teacher can influence the perceived cognitive freedom of action of students, but enhancing readiness for action is more difficult. One possible explanation is that because students in vocational education do not respond to the support of cognitive freedom of action as do many other previous studied target groups in education, but further research is needed to explore this possibility.Show less

Show less

Show less

In the current study, 428 primary school pupils from groups 6 and 7 are taken to investigate the influence of the home literacy environment and reading performance on the reading motivation . Through questionnaires it was found that a more stimulating home environment and literacy ensures a better the vocabulary and a stronger reading motivation . In addition, we investigated whether non- enthusiastic readers have a resistance (attentional bias) to reading. Attentional bias is measured with a digital selective attention task and was not found in enthusiastic or non - enthusiastic readers.Show less

Show less

Show less

The influence of coaching on maternal reflective functioning and child aggression is also examined. Method The sample consisted of 85 mother-infant dyads. Mothers were allocated to a high or low risk group based on maternal characteristics. Half of the high risk mothers were randomly assigned to a coaching group. Maternal reflective functioning was assessed prenatally and when children were 20 months of age by Pregnancy Interview (PI) and Parental Development Interview (PDI). Mothers were asked to aggressive symptoms in their child. Children’s precursors of ToM were measured at 20 months by an imitation task, a visual perspectives task and a discrepant desires task. Results Maternal prenatal reflective functioning was found to be negatively related to child aggressive behaviour. However maternal postnatal self-related RF was positively related to child aggression. In addition, maternal reflective functioning was found to be positively related to one precursor of ToM, but ToM did not mediate the relationship between maternal reflective functioning and child aggression. No effect of coaching on maternal reflective functioning and child aggression was found. Conclusion The present study provides evidence for the relationship between maternal reflective functioning and child aggression at a young age. This emphasizes the importance of well-developed maternal reflective functioning capacities for the behavioural development of children. This relationship could be mediated by child’s ToM, but this should be further researched. Coaching would be a suitable way to enhance maternal reflective functioning capacities, but the effects of coaching should be investigated after mothers received coaching for a longer period of time.Show less

Previous studies indicated different physical reactions during the processing of positive and negative feedback. However, no studies investigated FRN potential differences during the processing of social feedback in young children. The present study examined differences in FRN potentials in children of 4 6 years old (N = 17, M = 5.61, 64,7% boys) during the processing of positive, negative and neutral social feedback. In addition, gender differences in effortful control (EC) and the relation between EC and the FRN difference score were examined. The FRN potentials were recorded during an age appropriate social judgment task accomplished by the participants. The results indicated no significant differences in FRN potentials during the processing of positive, negative and neutral social judgements, suggesting that young children do not differentiate between social judgments yet. According to the EC results, no relation is found between EC and the FRN difference score. These results suggest no relation between EC and FRNd potentials in young children. Also, no gender differences were found in EC, suggesting that young boys and girls have similar levels of inhibition and attentional focusing.Show less

It is therefore important to gain insight in influencing factors of math performance of boys and girls. This thesis examined the relation between teachers’ math anxiety and math performance of boys and girls as well as potential mediating factors, such as stereotypes and math competency beliefs. The Math Attitude Scale (MAS; Betz, 1978) was completed by 43 teachers (31 women (72%), average age: M = 40.77, SD = 12.71), from 22 regular primary schools in west and central Netherlands, Twente and Zeeland. A modified version of the Student Attitude Questionnaire’ (SAQ, Wigfield & Meece, 1988) is completed by 279 students (156 girls (56%), average age, M = 11.22, SD = 12.71) of group 6, 7 and 8. Results showed that both boys and girls have the same level of stereotypes (p = .09). Boys on the other hand had a higher level of competency beliefs (p < .001, d = .58). Likewise the math performance of boys was also higher (p = .02, d = .28). There was no mediation path for both boys and girls between teachers’ math anxiety, stereotypes of students and math performance of students (p = .29). Competency beliefs seemed to be a predictor rather than a mediator of math performance for students (p < .001, ɳ2 = .44). To improve math performance, parents and teachers can express positive expectations of math performance to increase the students’ math competency beliefs.Show less

In addition, personal characteristics like aggressive behavior may influence this reaction. This study examined whether heart rate reactivity of four-to-seven-year-old children differed during the processing of positive, negative and neutral social judgments, and whether aggression levels were related to heart rate reactivity during the processing of social judgments. Heart rate and behavioral data of 29 children was collected during an adjusted version of the Social Judgment Task. Results showed significant differences in the behavioral responses to negative and neutral judgments, compared to the responses to positive judgments. No significant differences were found in heart rate reactivity during the three conditions. These results indicate that children do distinguish between the three conditions, but their heart rate reactivity might not be influenced by the content of the feedback yet. Additionally aggression seems to be related to heart rate reactivity during the positive and negative condition. These findings suggest that heart rate reactivity in response to social judgments might develop throughout childhood, while aggression levels already influence heart rate reactivity in young children.Show less

Current study investigates the relation between infant aggressive behavior, regulation capacity and negative affect, and maternal sensitivity and intrusiveness. The aim of the study was to identify indicators of early infant aggression. 85 Mothers (M = 24.67 years, SD = 2.10) filled in questionnaires concerning infant aggressive behavior and temperament of their 20-month-old infant (M = 19.92 months, SD = 0.76, 54 % boys). Maternal behavior was observed during a Teaching Task. Regression and mediation analyses where conducted. Current study confirms maternal sensitivity and negative affect as predictors of infant aggressive behavior. For infant regulation capacity and intrusive parenting of the mother no predictive value was found. Maternal parenting skills did not mediate the association between infant temperament and aggression. The results suggest that infant negative affect is an important factor in the development of infant aggression and should be involved in future prevention and intervention programs together with stimulating mothers’ sensitive parenting skills.Show less

Show less

We examined, using electro-encephalogram (EEG), amplitude differences of the P3 components between positive, negative and neutral social judgments in children between the age of four and six. In addition, the relation between individual differences in empathy and the difference score of the P3 amplitude between social acceptance and social rejection was studied. Before the start of the experiment, participants received a self-chosen stuffed animal. During EEG data acquisition participants were presented with same-aged peer judgments referring to their stuffed-animal. Empathy of the participants was measured by using the My Child Questionnaire and by performing the Sally-Anne task. Results showed a clear P3 amplitude between 500 and 800 milliseconds after stimulus onset. However, contrary to what was expected, no significant differences between positive, negative and neutral social judgment processing were found. Furthermore, empathy was not found to be related to P3 amplitude differences between social acceptance and social rejection. Although no statistical results were found, current research provides new hypothesis for further research that refers to social feedback processing in children between four and six years old.Show less

Show less

Teachers administer the CBM Maze task frequently and evaluate students‟ progress towards an individual goal. Insufficient growth in scores indicates the reading instruction to be ineffective for the particular student and calls to adapt the instruction, which again is followed by evaluating its effectiveness. Research indicates that the use of CBM Maze task can improve students‟ reading performances if teachers use it to plan their instructions. Despite of CBM being properly used by teachers, they seem to use it too little to modify their reading instruction. A possible explanation for the lack of instructional adaptations is that teachers do not know how they can adapt their instructions. This study examined how many, and what kind of ideas teachers have to adapt their instruction for students with reading difficulties, and the relationship between the ideas, the implementation of an adaptation by the teachers and Teacher efficacy. Teachers (N = 23) filled in a Teacher efficacy questionnaire and were interviewed about their ideas for instructional adaptations, after two of their students completed the CBM Maze task for ten weeks. After another eight weeks of CBM Maze administration it was examined whether teachers made an adjustment in their instruction for their students. About half of the teachers did not adapt their instruction despite it was necessary based on the Maze scores. Also, the implementation of an instructional adaptation did not relate with both the amount of ideas for instructional adaptations as well as Teacher efficacy. Doubts about the validity of the Maze task by teachers are considered to be involved in their use of CBM Maze. Although the study was exploratory because of the small sample size, implications for practice are discussed.Show less

Identifying the preceding or maintaining factors of anxiety disorders are essential for the development of prevention and intervention programs. The present study investigated the role of maternal executive functioning, maternal anxiety, and infant’s behavioral inhibition in 12 months old infants (M = 12.16, SD = 0.63, 58% boys) during a stressful task. Seventy-six mothers (M = 22.25 years, SD = 2.53 years) completed questionnaires on executive functioning and maternal anxiety and infant behavioral inhibition. Infant fear was observed during the Robottask (Goldsmith & Rothbart, 1999). Results confirm a relationship between a decline in maternal executive functioning on the one hand and an increase in maternal anxiety and infant behavioral inhibition on the other. Current study suggests that maternal executive functioning may be a risk factor for anxiety disorders in young children. Therefore it is recommended to pay extra attention to maternal executive functioning in diagnostic research for anxiety disorders in children. Treatment of a decline in maternal executive functioning should be included in future prevention and intervention programs.Show less

In other research a relationship has been established between ASD or alexithymia and high arousal. A prolonged increased arousal increases risk of psychosomatic problems. Therefore, research on arousal in ASD and alexithymia is relevant. In addition, studies on ASD have usually included men only, although there is evidence that women have other features of ASD. It is important to investigate this potential gender difference in the relation between ASD and arousal. In this study participated only women, 30 with ASD and 30 without ASD. Arousal was recorded by the average heartbeat per minute in two conditions: at rest and during stress. In the stress conditions participants looked at tree clips of social situations that evoke different emotions. In the resting condition participants watched a soothing movie clip. Alexithymia is measured by the BVAQ. Findings revealed that there were no significant differences in the arousal at rest or in stress between females with alexithymia or ASD and females without alexithymia or ASD. There were no significant relations between the two dimensions of alexithymia and arousal. Furthermore, ASD was not a moderator in the relation between alexithymia and arousal in either condition. As such the current research suggests that there is no higher risk of psychosomatic problems due to prolonged elevated arousal in people with ASD or alexithymia or a combination of both.Show less

The 'Socio-cognitive integration of abilities model’ has shown that there is an interaction between cognitive functions and the factors which influence social behaviour. Aim: This research focuses on the predictive value of executive functions (inhibition, cognitive flexibility and working memory) and receptive language on the social behaviour of typically developing young children. Method: 38 children between 3 and 6 years (M = 4.2, SD = .99) of age participated in this study. In a quantitative study the results of the receptive language test and questionnaires about social deficits and executive functioning were analysed. The ‘Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-III-NL’ was used to assess receptive language and parent-report questionnaire measures ‘Social Responsiveness Scale’ and ‘Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functions Preschool version’ were used to assess social problems and executive functions, respectively. Results: This study shows that receptive language and executive functions (subtests: inhibition, working memory and cognitive flexibility) were related to social problems. Higher levels of problems in working memory and cognitive flexibility were associated with more social problems. However, higher levels of problems in inhibition were related to less social problems. Higher levels of receptive language were related to less social problems. Discussion: Results and suggestions for future research are discussed.Show less

Participants were 23 teachers working in primary, secondary, regular or special education. The participants completed a shortened version of the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES; Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001). The interpretation of the CBM-graphs was measured with the Think-Aloud method and interviews were conducted to assess the number of ideas for instructional changes. The relationships have been investigated by correlation analyses. The results revealed that there was no significant relationship between Teacher efficacy and the interpretation of CBM-graphs. Also, no significant relation between Teacher efficacy and the number of ideas for instructional changes was found. The relationship between the interpretation of CBM-graphs of fictitious students and the interpretation of CBM-graphs of the teacher’s own students was significant. Teachers interpreted CBM graphs of fictional students as well as CBM graphs of their own students. The results of this study can be used for the development of courses for teacher’s to help them interpret CBM-graphs. Also the results from this study can be used to improve a follow-up study about teacher’s interpretation and use of CBM-data.Show less
