Prestigious cities had more political power...Show moreIn seventeenth century Holland, a fierce urban competition stimulated civic magistrates to commission works of art that increased their city's prestige. Prestigious cities had more political power and influence in the province, which allowed them to secure their interests more effectively. Leiden's magistrate increased the city's prestige in the province by commissioning maps that reflected Leiden's urban identity and showed its importance in Holland between 1574 and 1700. Maps allowed urban magistrates to promote their cities to a larger audience compared to traditional works of art. Leiden's magistrate commissioned maps that reflected the importance of the relief of 1574 for the Dutch Revolt, the city's university, and its textile industry. By promoting these elements of Leiden's identity to a broad audience of elites and non-elites in the Dutch Republic and Europe, these maps increased Leiden's prestige in the political arena of Holland and secured the city's influence and power in the province.Show less

The job of this extraordinary judicial counsil was to punish the main actors that had caused so much trouble for the Habsburg regime during the 'Wonderjaar', the year 1566-1567 when an iconoclastic fury spread in the Netherlands. There is still very little known about the ways of the Counsil of Troubles, despite the fact that there is an abandunt of eyewitness testimonies preserverd, ready to be studied. This thesis is a first attempt to do this. It is done for the city Zaltbommel in Guelders. In Zaltbommel there was no fury, but a religieus accord was struck at 23 oktober 1566, explicitly against the wishes of the then governor Margaretha van Parma. Three persons were executed by the Counsil of Troubles, and at least thirty-six were banished. What was the method of the commissioners of Alba, who where sent to investigate and punish? With whom did they talk? And how much help did they receive from the inhabitants of Zaltbommel and its city council?Show less

The thesis concentrates on the period between 1618 and 1632. It investigates if anything can be said about the effects of the war on the public debate in the Republic. As sources are used: pamphlets, and the early dutch newspapers of the family van Hilten and Broer Janszoon.Show less
