Aan de hand van een begrippenkader dat afkomstig is van de...Show moreDit onderzoek gaat in op de ontwikkeling van de Chinese economie en het onderliggende kapitalistische systeem in de periode 1960-2010. Aan de hand van een begrippenkader dat afkomstig is van de Varieties of Capitalism-theorie, wordt er gekeken hoe het Chinese kapitalistische systeem/model getypeerd kan worden binnen het kader van het comparatief kapitalisme debat. Teneinde dit centrale vraagstuk te beantwoorden, worden er vier institutionele domeinen onderzocht die, door hun rol in de organisatie en distributie van de productiefactoren binnen een economie, de kern vormen van een kapitalistisch systeem. Deze domeinen zijn: 1) de staat; 2) het financiële systeem; 3) bedrijfsbestuur en onderlinge bedrijfsrelaties en; 4) het arbeidsmarktregime. Uit de analyse van deze domeinen vloeit tevens het vaststellen van vormen van institutionele complementariteit en institutionele comparatieve voordelen voort. Daarnaast wordt er in dit onderzoek uitgebreid aandacht besteed aan de sociaaleconomische ontwikkeling van China, het Chinese proces van handelsliberalisering en de invloed van cultuur op institutionele ontwikkeling. De belangrijkste bevinding van dit onderzoek is dat China zich in de periode 1960-2010 heeft ontwikkeld tot een State-Coordinated Market Economy (SCME). In deze kapitalistische variant is 'non-market' coördinatie in handen van een actieve, sturende en autoritaire staat en wordt politieke dominantie gekoppeld aan gecoördineerde economische ontwikkeling. De specifieke rol van de staat binnen de Chinese economie maakt tevens dat het benoemen van vormen van institutionele complementariteit alleen, niet voldoende is om de werking van het Chinese kapitalisme te duiden. Daarom zijn in dit onderzoek de concepten van (opzettelijke) economische institutionele tegenstrijdigheid en politieke institutionele complementariteit geïntroduceerd.Show less

In order to answer this question, this thesis uses records concerning...Show moreThis thesis answers the question why there was a cluster of innovation in the English textile industry between 1760 and 1820. In order to answer this question, this thesis uses records concerning eight important textile inventors: Samuel Crompton, Richard Arkwright, James Hargreaves, Matthew Murray, Edmund Cartwright, William Radcliffe, Jedediah Strutt and John Kennedy. Crucial for clusters of innovative activity in general is that the existing stock of knowledge and techniques is constantly recombined into new technical knowledge, leading to innovation. It is pivotal for constant recombination that individual access costs to new technical knowledge are low. This, in turn, is achieved when new knowledge rapidly circulates, allowing inventors to constantly build on innovations done before them. A thorough study of eight important textile inventors will show that the cluster of innovative activity in the British textile industry existed because groups of inventors, manufacturers, financiers and workmen in the North West of England closely cooperated in a number of ways and because new technical knowledge rapidly circulated within and between these groups. These processes took place within a cultural context favourable to innovation, a political context in which elites supported innovation and an economic context in which large amounts of human capital were available. The cooperation took place both inside and outside of the inventive process. Within the inventive process, workmen and financiers provided the inventor with the technical and financial aid necessary to continue inventing. Outside of the inventive process, they helped some inventors to be properly rewarded for their efforts and collectively opposed inventors with overtly monopolistic tendencies. Rapid circulation of knowledge within and between these groups was realised in several ways. First, the successful collective action taken against monopolistic inventors insured the quick diffusion of their inventions. Second, most inventors at times freely shared their inventions with fellow inventors, manufacturers, and the public at large. Third, inventions were massively stolen. One of the ways in which new technical knowledge was stolen, was through the patent system. Contrary to popular belief, the English patent system, in most cases, did not allow individuals a sufficient return on the money, time and effort they had put into their innovative process. The specification of their invention, included in the patent application, was widely copied. Most inventors were unable to successfully fight these infringements. However, many inventors kept taking out patents, hoping to be successfully remunerated. In this way, the system contributed to the free circulation of new technical knowledge. These findings contribute to several debates within the field of social and economic history, economics and organisational science.Show less
From the 1970s onwards, Britain’s weakened trade unions have attempted a rejuvenation of their orientations and strategies: chiefly in order to appeal to and represent precarity-prone workers in a...Show moreFrom the 1970s onwards, Britain’s weakened trade unions have attempted a rejuvenation of their orientations and strategies: chiefly in order to appeal to and represent precarity-prone workers in a more satisfactory manner than they had before. However, this rejuvenation process has occurred in a piecemeal and uncoordinated manner: orientations have only shifted partially, and certain rejuvenatory strategies have been far from effective. An interwoven process has occurred alongside, and helped necessitate, this attempted rejuvenation: Britain’s urban labour markets have become increasingly ‘ruralised’. That is to say, the British economy has been fundamentally restructured, and urban industrial relations in the ‘New Economy’ have come to increasingly resemble those long found in British agriculture. Britain’s Farmworkers’ Union has had to contend with ‘new economic’ institutional conditions – namely the norms of small-employee firms and interpersonal and/or triangular relations between employers and workers – for an extended period of time. It is therefore reasonable to assume that, from 1970 onwards, the Farmworker’s Union would have utilised those orientations and strategies adopted by Britain’s urban unions during their rejuvenation processes, but in a more systematic, coherent and effective manner, and from an earlier date. To interrogate this assumption I pose the following research question: in terms of form and effectiveness, how differentiated have the orientations and strategies of the Farmworkers’ Union been, with regards to precarity-prone workers, when compared to the wider Trade Union Movement, and why?Show less
In deze thesis staan de veranderingen op het gebied van de gemiddelde uittredeleeftijd en de arbeidsparticipatie van oudere werknemers sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Nederland centraal. De...Show moreIn deze thesis staan de veranderingen op het gebied van de gemiddelde uittredeleeftijd en de arbeidsparticipatie van oudere werknemers sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Nederland centraal. De Algemene Ouderdomswet en het vervroegd uittreden van oudere werknemers vormen de twee kernpunten die ik behandel. Het ontstaan van de AOW en de VUT wordt uitvoerig besproken en tevens komen de belangrijkste discussies die zich in de loop der jaren hebben ontwikkeld met betrekking tot deze twee onderwerpen aan bod. Deze debatten hadden hoofdzakelijk met de financiering en de toekomstige verwachtingen te maken. De belangrijkste bevinding uit deze thesis is dat Nederland tot de jaren zeventig een hoge arbeidsparticipatie van oudere werknemers kende. Dankzij de economische problemen die in dit decennium zichtbaar begonnen te worden, gingen werkgevers en vakbonden op zoek naar mogelijkheden om de groeiende werkloosheid terug te dringen. Dit leidde tot het vervroegd uittreden of de VUT en hier maakten veel oudere werknemers gebruik van, wat als gevolg had dat de arbeidsdeelname van deze groep aanzienlijk daalde. Onder invloed van de toenemende vergrijzing leidde dit echter tot te hoge kosten en vanaf de jaren negentig werd het vervroegd uittreden steeds minder aantrekkelijk gemaakt door de overheid. Na de eeuwwisseling werd deze trend voortgezet. Hierdoor steeg de participatiegraad van oudere werknemers en ook traden zij op steeds hogere leeftijd uit het arbeidsproces. In internationaal opzicht waren deze ontwikkelingen opmerkelijk. Werd Nederland eind jaren tachtig nog gekenmerkt door een uitzonderlijk lage arbeidsdeelname van 55-plussers, in 2011 waren de rollen omgedraaid en behoorde Nederland tot de top van Europa op het vlak van de arbeidsparticipatie.Show less
