The African country has always followed its own peculiar development path, being ruled by the same socialist president for over 20 years. Despite the fact that Tanzania was ruled as a one party state, for some reason the way the country was governed seemed to have had some sort of significant appeal to the Dutch ministry of Foreign Affairs. Did they try to work and cooperate alongside the Tanzanian government or did they let him continue his experiment as long as stability was ensured? Did the Dutch state care so much for Tanzania because they believed in Ujamaa, or at least parts of it? By combining these questions the thesis will show how Netherlands reacted to the economic effects of Julius Nyerere’s Ujamaa policy.Show less

During the millennia that have passed since the construction of these monuments, the meaning given to them by their spectators has altered several times. This study focusses on the interpretation and reuse of the Theban New Kingdom mortuary temples, the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the Old Kingdom pyramids at the Giza Plateau during the Ptolemaic and Roman Periods. Aim of this study is to show how these monuments were interpreted and reused by two different groups of spectators, namely the Graeco-Roman tourists, who came to see these monuments, and the native Egyptians, who lived in the vicinity of these buildings. Moreover, the ways in which the meaning given to these mortuary monuments during the Pharaonic Period survived into the Ptolemaic and Roman Periods, are discussed.Show less

However, such criteria of judgment easily lead to the “labeling” of immigrants as “non-natives” and “forever foreigner”. And this kind of label is quite often placed on Overseas Chinese. Actually, the process of Overseas Chinese integrating into the host society has similarities with the history of the fusion of Hu and Han nationalities in Chinese history. Thus by comparing to the history of Hu and Han nationalities, a new standard to decide the identity of Chinese immigrants has been brought by this paper. The criteria to judge the identity of Overseas Chinese should not be based on descent and race, but on their cultural identity. The purpose of the paper is to enhance understanding of the difficulty of integrating into the host society faced by Overseas Chinese and tries to make some suggestions which may help to improve the hard situation of Overseas Chinese.Show less

The organization gained reputation for being armed and willing to shoot back at attackers, which was in contrast with the nonviolent strategy as preached by activists such as Martin Luther King Jr. However, as the Movement was progressing, more armed African American organizations were established and the Deacons' faded away against the background of more radical groups such as the Black Panther Party. The Deacons' role within these late years of the Civil Rights Movement is what has been researched in this Master Thesis.Show less

It studies the political and economic position of these planters and the changes it had to go through after the transfer of sovereignty, in the light of the ongoing New Guinea conflict between the Netherlands and Indonesia. The study argues that the Dutch planters had trouble with adjusting to the new political and social situation, which was hardened by the political relationship between the former colonizer and colonized.Show less

Using geographical analysis, survey archaeology and discourse analysis, this thesis researches the extent to which the marginal hinterlands (or 'shatter zones') of Late Antique North Africa were integrated into the wider Roman, Mediterranean state space. Despite the topographic difficulties for the Roman Empire to control the mountainous and steppe inland of the region, survey archaeology reveals a landscape that became thoroughly transformed under the later Roman Empire. Integration in the third to fifth centuries ended in the sixth century under the pressure of emperor Justinian's ideology of imperial renovatio.Show less

Show less

Show less
