Show less

Show less

It was the culmination of several years of planning to improve the poor situation in these territories. The aim was to provide Curaçao with food produced in New Netherland and cut the costs of the unprofitable island. The connection functioned poorly as a lack of shipping capacity made it impossible to supply Curaçao as planned, and food shortages remained common.Show less

Show less

By analysing those combats that were described in Olivier de la Marche's book of advice on the subject, this thesis demonstrates that trial by combat was no longer primarily about gathering evidence of guilt or innocence. Instead, most combats seem to have revolved around matters of honour or matters of state.Show less

It is argued that Brem and Krom were inspired by John Owen, Jonathan Edwards and Moravian spirituality. As result, their pneumatology involved the theme’s creation, mission and outreach, the outpouring of the Spirit, progress in history, eschatology and ecumenism. Also, it was featured by the key concepts of love, experience and sanctification. Brem and Krom’s pneumatology was innovative in the Dutch reformed context. As such, it explains the character and origin of Dutch evangelicalism between 1770 and 1804.Show less

The so-called ruler cult quickly gains popularity in the Hellenistic era and continues long into the Roman period. Although scholars have long been trying to find an explanation for this in the source material, none have succeeded in finding one which satisfies all. It is possible that the Cognitive Science of Religion (CSR) could provide us with a new framework in which to place the already exciting evidence. Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary and scientific investigation of the mind and intelligence. Its advantages are that it focusses on general ‘laws’ of thinking that follow out of the structure of our brains. It follows then, that these are theories that should be applicable across cultures and, since the structure of our brains has not evolved since the beginning of history (ca. 3000 B.C.), they are also applicable through time. Cognitive science could therefore help in providing a framework in which the current theories on the ruler cult can function, by indicating what is even humanly possible to think based on the structure of the brain. It could perhaps, even suggest the most likely theories that can be discovered given certain tendencies the human mind has. This research examines the possibility of applying the Cognitive Science of Religion in the origin and flourishing of the Hellenistic and Roman ruler cults, as well as the study of Ancient History in general. It does this by examining the viability of the so-called Standard Model (a seven-point construct that outlines the major areas of consensus in CSR) in the primary material of the Hellenistic and Roman periods.Show less

Show less

For the better part of a decade, the boy's father, Maximilian of Austria combatted alternative governments erected by a coalition of the unruly Flemish cities and the most important members of the Netherlandish aristocracy. This being the first time in the Netherlands that the nobility took part in what is ostensibly an urban revolt, it is worth examing what the relationship between Maximilian and the nobility was. The punishments doled out afterward are an ideal way to assess such a relationship, since they show clear results and allow for direct comparisons. In this thesis, I argue that the severity of a punishment depended mostly on the prospect of a nobleman's utility afterwards, where ties to major urban centres and to the Burgundian dynasty were prime qualities. Furthermore, I attempt to show that beyond the actual punishment, the narrative form in which events are recounted and made by rhetoric and ritual involved in the surrenders and trials constitute a vital part of the conflict and its peace negotiations for these honour-focused nobles.Show less
