Donald Trump is notoriously not religious but he is seen as a vehicle to elevate the religious agenda in the political arena. In 2016, Donald Trump run a campaign that engaged with the evangelicals’ desire to restore social and cultural ‘morality’ in the public space and their desire to unwaveringly support Israel. Most of the scholarly debate on Trump’s stance on Israel is angled from a policy perspective, attributing his position to factors such as geopolitics, the influence of Biblical prophecy in American diplomacy, and the increased role of White Christian Nationalism in the political agenda. The research of this thesis will expand on the literature by exploring how Trump’s rhetoric and politics on Israel are used to appeal to his pro-Israel conservative base. The analysis of Trump’s rhetoric and political action using the tool of critical discourse analysis will provide insights between language, ideology, and power. President Trump’s language and political efforts concerning Israel appeal to the Christian evangelical base that makes up most of the Republican Party. Furthermore, Trump has enhanced the role of Christianity in politics, to promote the idea that progressive policies are incompatible with the American identity, and has established America’s relationship with Israel as an inherent value.Show less

During the Cold War, the United States faced the Soviet Union in a battle of becoming the worlds’ superpower through nuclear means. Today, the United States has new potential nuclear opponents, of which Iran and North Korea pose the most danger to the U.S. To comprehend these threats and the U.S.’s response to those, this thesis examines the difference between the United States’ past nuclear opponent, The Soviet Union, and its current nuclear adversaries, Iran and North Korea. Through an in-depth case study of the former Soviet Union, Iran and North Korea as nuclear adversaries of the United States, this comparative study provides an analysis of the United States’ nuclear opponents and the U.S. response to them. It analyzes the past and current nuclear adversaries based on their regime type, incentives to become a nuclear power and their nuclear relationship to the United States. It concludes that Both Iran and North Korea share different resemblances with the former Soviet Union.Show less

It seems as though both countries have never understood...Show moreWhen looking at the relationship between the U.S. and Russia one can see that since the fall of the Soviet Union it has been a tense one. It seems as though both countries have never understood each other, culturally, politically and economically. With the alleged 2016 meddling of Russia in U.S. elections the mistrust towards Russia has risen to an all-time high. This thesis aims to provide an analysis of the Clinton Administration which can be used as lessons for future administrations. First a small overview of the development of the relationship between the U.S. and Russia will be provided. It will then proceed to look at the role of NATO expansion within the development of the relationship between both countries, during the critical time-period after the fall of the Soviet Union. Furthermore, the personal relation between President Clinton and Russia, as well as President Yeltsin, will be examined to indicate how Clinton tackled the opportunity of starting to build a solid relationship between the U.S. and Russia. By concluding with a case study on Bosnia this thesis aims to show how different interests can lead to a conflicting relationship, leading to the fact that there are still lessons that can be learned from history.Show less
