Built upon close readings of the texts, the thematic approach serves to highlight the continuities and breaks between Romantic-Realism and the beginnings of Modernism, whilst reassessing the traditional Flaubert-Joyce link in favour of Balzac's own influence on Joyce.Show less

Many of the scenes seem to take place around the table, with meals often being described in detail. Specific research into this shows how the writers have devoted much detail and care to the theme of food, and that it is not purely ‘added’ due to the realistic/naturalistic nature of their works, or just for the sake of ‘showing off’ and ‘decoration’, as some studies might imply. By approaching the food as a theme on its own, its seemingly innocent character soon translates into social criticism.Show less

Show less

Although the role of a novelist is different from the role of a politician, they both have responsibilities towards society, especially if they are famous and powerful men like Houellebecq and Macron. The public, citizens in a democracy, also have their responsibility to be active and critical, but may not always be aware of "the art of manipulation". In this age, in which storytelling and "fake news" seem to have more impact (or credibility) than arguments and facts, we might state that the power of skillful writers is more important than ever. In what way are Houellebecq and Macron responsible for (the impact of) their writings, what is the power of their words, and what does this power mean in France today? In this thesis we compare Submission and Revolution, using theories from literature but also from sociology and historiography, notably the concepts of "performativity" and “storytelling”, applicable in several fields. Attentive to their differences, we'll compare a literary and a political book, analysing the use of fiction combined with politics and vice versa.Show less
The key notions on temporality, as formulated by Henri Bergson, enable us to study the comic of Ionesco's play within a temporal perspective.

The city in which these stories are set has an equally strong grasp on the imaginations of the masses: the moment Sherlock Holmes and London are mentioned within the same breath, a very iconic and somewhat stereotypical image of the city comes to mind. A foggy, smoke ridden city, congested with traffic, populated by exotic figures, which in the nineteenth century has become the heart of a global Empire.1 This of course, is a stereotypical image of the city, a way of describing the city by authors in order to gain some form of control over the immense city. This will be discussed in greater depth in the following chapter. The characters Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are still quite as popular as they were in the nineteenth century, maybe even more so. In the recent years the two iconic characters have starred in movies, various TV-shows as well as new books. There are some authors who have tried to recapture the magic of Sherlock Holmes.2 Whether they have succeeded is another matter, and does not fit within the scope of this research. Though the stories have always focussed on the world’s only consulting detective and the good doctor, they are always connected to capital of an Empire, London. This connection between Sherlock Holmes and London is precisely the subject of this research. The question which has been centralised in this work is: What was the message that Conan Doyle was possibly trying to send his contemporary readers through his description of London and his use of the genre of crime fiction?Show less

Show less

Show less

Show less
