This way of life generates side effects like the destruction of natural...Show moreOur modern way of life is shaped by modern science and its promise of progress and the control of nature through technology. This way of life generates side effects like the destruction of natural resources and of cultural and biodiversity provoking further progression of science and technology to solve these problems and keep the illusion of progress and the control of nature alive. But every technological intervention generates new side effects leading to a vicious circle in which we are held captive. This leads to the emergence of a paradox in our conception of human identity as the master and possessor of nature and as such it is philosophically relevant. Our way of life became fully fledged due to the Scientific Revolution, which philosophical focal point is Descartes as the one who explicitly conceives of the method, nature and human identity. This MA-thesis offers an interpretation of Descartes’ thought as originating from his uncanny experience of nature as an infinite micro and macrocosmos leading to an epistemic gap which Descartes tries to bridge by his method which is interpreted as an algebraisation of thought and the concomitant mechanisation of nature which he conceives of as a cultivation of the divine seeds of knowledge in the inborn natural constitution of the human being (ingenium). This cultivation is interpreted as a philosophical Neolithic Revolution. This MA-thesis demonstrates this to be an instance of nature dictating what human identity is, demonstrating the human being to be already a part of the semantic whole that nature is and already being borne by this whole, thus rendering the promise of the control of nature a mirage. This has far reaching consequences for our way of life and our conception of our own identity, though it is the question whether we can experience it as such. It seems to call for a radical new way of thinking.Show less

Chapter...Show moreThis paper looks at whether something more than the system of individual rights is required to uphold justice for the members of immigrant minority groups in liberal democracies and states. Chapter 1 of the paper looks at whether group membership in general provides value for individuals, because if it does not then there is no need for extra protection, as it is not desirable. On the basis that groups and group membership is valuable in some way, chapter 2 examines whether any extra protection is required, and if so what forms it could exist in. The overall argument of the paper is that while group membership is on the whole valuable for individuals, no extra system of group rights is required to ensure that justice is upheld for the members of minority groups. Groups cannot make claims as separate entities, as the only entitlements they are able to claim are on behalf of their individual members. The existing system of individual rights and universal standards of justice is sufficient as it stands.Show less

A concept is a philosophical tool to establish a definite representation of the addressed notion. In this sense, the conceptual approach to freedom has, in the modern era, led to the formulation of two dominant concepts of freedom, i.e. positive and negative concept of freedom. The conceptual approach to freedom holds sway over the current legal, political, sociological, and philosophical debates. This methodological study puts the adequacy of this approach into question. As such, the main task of this research is to articulate a complex method, whereby one could rethink the notion of ‘freedom’ from the standpoint of the other. This method of inquiry will be cultivated, through the exploration and examination of Heidegger’s phenomenological method, Wittgenstein’s account of linguistic meaning and Castoriadis’s social-historical approach. The dialogical composition of these three perspectives enables us to give birth to a new complex method, by which one could investigate the notion of ‘freedom’ from the standpoint of the other.Show less

Such a theory has great consequences for how we view the mind and thus also how we view the mind’s malfunctions; mental disorders. A new way of looking at mental disorders within the framework of enactivism means to see a mental disorder not just as a brain malfunction, but as a disorder in the subjects being-in-the-world; meaning the interaction between brain, body and world. The author explores what such a view would be and what consequences this would have for understanding, diagnosing and treating mental illness.Show less

Daarbij komt niet alleen de verhouding tussen verschillende vormen van wetenschappelijk onderzoek aan bod, maar ook de verhouding tussen wetenschappelijk onderzoek in het algemeen en onderzoek zoals zich dat voltrekt in de kunsten. Aan de hand van Dewey en Heidegger wordt een begrip van de structuur van de onderzoeksactiviteit ontwikkelt. Deze dient als alternatief voor het gangbare begrip, waarmee een onderscheid gemaakt wordt tussen verschillende takken van onderzoek (het bekendste: het onderscheid geesteswetenschappelijk en natuurwetenschappelijk onderzoek). Dat gangbare begrip van de structuur van onderzoek ontvangen we van Dilthey, het onderscheid volgt bij Dilthey uit een fundamenteel onderscheid dat hij maken moet (onder druk van Kant) tussen twee wijzen van ervaren. Het is de mogelijkheid om dit onderscheid te maken, tussen een "innerlijke" en een "uiterlijke" wijze van ervaren, die in deze these wordt geproblematiseerd.Show less

This design, what he calls the Geviert (Fourfold), seems to appear out of nowhere. But on second thoughts it becomes clear that it is a continuation of his earlier work, and it is an answer to the problems of the European thinking. The main question of my study: ‘What includes Heideggers Geviert?’ The thesis consists of four chapters. The first focuses on the conception of the design of the Geviert in Heideggers earlier works, such as Sein und Zeit and Urpsprung des Kunstwerkes. The second one talks about two spheres, the earth and the sky. The third one focuses on the other two spheres, the mortal and the godlike. The fourth chapter treats the relationship and the dynamic between the four spheres. One of the insights is that each sphere contains the dynamic of Heraclit’ phusis-concept. Herewith Heidegger harks back to the origin of the Western thought to address to problems that have sprung into this thinking at the root.Show less

Freud viewed it quite negatively, while Derrida, on the other hand, viewed it in a much more positive way. Based on a number of primary and secondary sources, we will argue in favor of Derrida’s approach to circumcision, and thus, we will argue against Freud. This is not to say that we reject Freud. Rather, we acknowledge the immense and ongoing influence of the genius of Freud. Yet, we amend his views on circumcision, using Derrida, who, himself, was greatly inspired by Freud. Ultimately, we will argue that Freud’s (somewhat Hegelian) view on circumcision is too rigid. As we will see below, Derrida’s dynamic approach is much more useful in contemporary philosophical debate.Show less

In het humanisme zie je almaar het idee terugkomen dat je kunt zeggen: “dit is echt menselijke, en dit niet”, “dit is hoe de natuur het met ons voor heeft” en “dit is de richting waar de mens naartoe moet”. Het humanisme veronderstelt te weten wat de mens is en de richting waarop hij zich dient te perfectioneren. Deze scriptie onderzoekt hoe de gedachte aan perfectionering speelt in de Nieuwe Tijd en wat de implicaties daarvan zijn voor het humanisme.Show less
