Previous linguistic research has shown that even though only Bantu languages are spoken in the area, there might have been Southern Cushitic habitation in the past. Taita Bantu words that resemble Cushitic words might be loanwords that were borrowed in a past period of language contact. This idea of extinct Southern Cushitic languages in the Taita Hills was proposed by Christopher Ehret and Derek Nurse in 1981. This thesis aims to critically review their article “The Taita Cushites”. Several tables with proposed Southern Cushitic loanwords in the Taita Bantu languages are included in the article. By reviewing 41 of these proposed loanwords, the accuracy of the article’s conclusions will be tested. New data is available on the Southern Cushitic and Bantu languages of East Africa that was not present yet in 1981. Using this data, new insights in the existence of the Taita Cushitic language(s) could be gained.Show less

Different results have been found...Show moreExtracting and generalizing rules from a complex input is one of the foundations of learning a language and can be studied using artificial grammar learning tasks. Different results have been found, between artificial grammar learning studies but also within these studies. This thesis tries to explain some of this variance by looking into whether different study backgrounds influence the ability to learn an artificial grammar in adults. The experiment is based on earlier research conducted by Geambaşu (2018), in which she tested adults’ ability to learn an artificial grammar by using clear and vague instructions. She found participants who received clear instructions (explicit instruction condition) to perform better in the experiment than participants who received vague instructions (implicit instruction condition). The participants in the present task were divided into two groups: linguistics students and science students, since they differ most in their courses. They were exposed to the grammar via a passive familiarization and tested with yes/no grammaticality judgment task. The two instruction conditions and the stimuli were similar to those used by Geambaşu (2018). Participants who received clear instructions were expected to perform better in the task, than participants who received vague instructions. Further, participants with a linguistic study background were expected to have more explicit language knowledge and therefore perform better in the task, than participants with a science study background. Results indicate that there is no difference in the ability to extract and generalize rules from the sequences between students with a linguistics study background and students with a science study background. Further, no effect was found based on the different instruction conditions or for the pattern participants were exposed to. However, participants who showed explicit knowledge of the rule, by indicating a strategy based on extracting and generalizing the pattern of the sequences, performed significantly better.Show less

De hoofdvraag die centraal staat is: In hoeverre worden zwarte en witte...Show moreDit BA-eindwerkstuk gaat over de framing van zwarte en witte vrouwelijke atleten in verschillende Nederlandse kranten. De hoofdvraag die centraal staat is: In hoeverre worden zwarte en witte vrouwelijke atleten verschillend geframed in Nederlandse kranten?. De kranten waarvoor de framing bekeken wordt, zijn de Volkskrant, het Algemeen Dagblad (AD) en De Telegraaf. Er is voor deze kranten gekozen omdat ze van oudsher verschillen op ideologisch gebied; de Volkskrant kan links op het politieke spectrum geplaats worden; het AD midden; en De Telegraaf rechts. In totaal zijn er 10 artikelen van elke krant meegenomen. Het corpus heeft dus in totaal een grootte van 30 artikelen waarvan de artikelen verspreid waren over de jaren van 2013 tot en met 2019. De framing voor de twee atleetgroepen is onderzocht aan de hand van een aangepaste versie van de (kwalitatieve en kwantitatieve) methode van Van Gorp (2007). Voor het analyseren is er een inductieve en deductieve fase doorlopen waarbij de frames gereconstrueerd en gecontroleerd werden. Uit de framingsanalyse bleek dat er in totaal 13 frames gereconstrueerd konden worden. Daarvan werden twee frames voor beide atleetgroepen gebruikt: het metamorfose- en het doorzettersframe. Er konden echter ook frames gereconstrueerd worden die exclusief voor een van de twee atleetgroepen gebruikt werden. Voor de zwarte vrouwelijke atleten waren dit het wonder-, diva- en krachtpasterframe en voor de witte vrouwelijke atleten het underdog-, zwoeger-, en work-in-progressframe. De drie kranten verschilden niet sterk in het gebruik van de verschillende frames. Bij het reconstrueren van de frames zijn ook nog een aantal sport- en atleet-specifieke beschrijvingen naar boven gekomen. Voor atletiek betrof het beschrijvingen met snelheid, voor boksen ging het om stoten; voor turnen het benoemen van de lengte. Simone Biles werd consequent kort genoemd; Kiki Bertens als iemand die niet mentaal sterk is en Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce als iemand die in de schaduw van anderen staat.Show less

Eerder onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat moedertaalsprekers in veel opzichten een voorsprong hebben op sprekers met een buitenlands accent, en dat gestigmatiseerde accenten ook negatiever worden beoordeeld dan minder gestigmatiseerde accenten. In deze scriptie worden de oordelen vergeleken van tachtig Nederlandse moedertaalsprekers over NT2ers met een Brits of Koerdisch accent. In een online enquête gaven zij scores aan de spreker, die zij hoorden in een opname, op verschillende aspecten die te maken hadden met ‘status’ en ‘solidariteit. Uit de resultaten kwam naar voren dat de spreker met Brits als moedertaal significant beter beoordeeld werd op zowel de status als de solidariteitsaspecten. In een exploratieve analyse waarin de inschatting van het land van herkomst werd meegenomen werd er geen significant effect gevonden van deze verwachting op de gegeven scores.Show less

Mensen die naar muziek luisteren, krijgen hierdoor ook veel van deze...Show moreIn de loop der jaren is er een groot aantal muziekgenres ontstaan, bestaande uit liedjes die vaak gepaard gaan met songteksten. Mensen die naar muziek luisteren, krijgen hierdoor ook veel van deze songteksten te horen. Vooral in het popgenre bestaan veel liedjes die dagelijks te horen zijn op de radio, in winkels en op festivals, waardoor een grote hoeveelheid mensen wordt blootgesteld aan de ‘communicatieve’ impact van de songteksten. Er bestaan echter ook andere muziekgenres waar veel naar geluisterd wordt en waar mensen de teksten van te horen krijgen. Dit BA-eindwerkstuk kijkt in hoeverre de invloed van de muziekgenres pop, metal, hip-hop en country gereflecteerd is in de stijl van de songteksten van deze muziekgenres. Om de stijlen van de songteksten te analyseren en met elkaar te vergelijken, wordt er gebruik gemaakt van de registeranalyse van Biber en Conrad (2019). In de registeranalyse wordt er gekeken naar de (kenmerkende) register- en genrekenmerken van de songteksten van de verschillende genres, om te zien of er bij de songteksten van de verschillende muziekgenres ook sprake is van een eigen register. Er wordt gekeken naar de woordenschat door middel van lexicale diversiteit (Type-Token-Ratio, MLTD, en Yule’s K) en een keyword analysis. Ook wordt er gekeken naar andere lexicale kenmerken zoals scheldwoorden en verwijzingen naar de eerste persoon enkelvoud en naar overige aspecten zoals non-lexicale woorden en songtekststructuren (bijvoorbeeld: verse-chorus of verse-chorus-bridge). De analyse wordt uitgevoerd op een corpus van 46.777 woorden bestaande uit songteksten van de volgens Spotify 30 bekendste artiesten en bands van de vier muziekgenres pop, metal, hip-hop en country. De resultaten tonen aan dat er interessante verschillen optreden tussen de songteksten van de verschillende muziekgenres. Alle muziekgenres hebben eigen keywords, die aansluiten op de algemene thema’s van de muziekgenres, de lexicale diversiteit is het hoogst voor het hip-hopgenre en het laagst voor het popgenre. Ook is het aantal scheldwoorden en non-lexicale woorden het meest typerend voor het hip-hopgenre, het popgenre heeft de meeste verwijzingen naar de eerste persoon enkelvoud en het pop-, metal- en hip-hopgenre hebben ook elk een eigen voorkeur voor songtekststructuren. Deze verschillen tonen aan dat er reden is om te geloven dat er voor elk van deze muziekgenres sprake is van een eigen songtekstregister.Show less

In dit...Show moreIn het hedendaagse Nederlandse werkleven worden veel werkvelden nog steeds gedomineerd door één gender: mannen hebben technische beroepen terwijl vrouwen werken in de kinderopvang en zorg. In dit onderzoek is onderzocht of vacaturetaal een bijdrage levert aan deze scheve verdeling. Uit een korte corpusstudie en een uitgebreide enquête blijkt dat vacaturetaal genderstereotypen in de hand werkt: agentic termen, woorden die stereotiep aan mannen worden gekoppeld, zijn vooral te vinden in vacatureteksten voor functies waar mannen de overhand hebben. Bij stereotiepe vrouwenberoepen vinden we vooral communal termen terug. Echter, vacaturetaal blijkt ook een mogelijke oplossing te bieden voor de scheve verdeling in het werkveld: door paarvormen (agent/agente) in plaats van de generieke mannelijke vorm (agent) of de m/v-vorm (agent (m/v)) te gebruiken in de functietitel, worden vrouwen meer aanwezig in de mentale representatie. De rest van de vacaturetekst moet zowel agentic als communal en weinig genderneutrale termen bevatten om aantrekkelijk te zijn voor beide genders. Kortom, diversiteit in vacaturetaal zorgt voor diversiteit op de werkvloer.Show less

The Quechuan languages consistently possess an infinite decimal system. This could be the result of the preservation of the high numerals after colonization that were used to keep track of administration in the extended Inca Empire. In the Arawakan family, both the range and the internal structure of the numerals differ. Just as for the Quechuan, the Arawakan people were involved in trade and war which could indicate a need of high numerals. However, unlike for the Quechuan numerals, they have not been preserved. During colonization, Arawakan groups fled from their original settlements and adopted other groups into their communities, which indicates substratum influence and explains the diversity of the Arawakan numerals. In the Guaporé-Mamoré linguistic area, numerals are mostly concentrated around a maximum of 20. The body-part system and a connection to company or loneliness are common in the numerals in this area.Show less

Both Spanish and Dutch have two-fold gender systems: Spanish differentiates between a feminine and a masculine gender; and Dutch distinguishes between a common and a neuter gender. In Spanish each gender is marked on the determiner and the adjective with a distinct morphological marker (e.g. the indefinite articles un – amasc and una - afem). In Dutch the indefinite article converges into one form for both genders (i.e. een) and the rules of adjectival agreement are less straightforward than the rules in Spanish. To examine how adult bilinguals handle the opaque Dutch gender system, data from four late Spanish-Dutch bilinguals (L1 Spanish, L2 Dutch), seven early Spanish-Dutch bilinguals and six monolingual Dutch speakers were collected by means of elicited production and analyzed for grammatical gender agreement on definite determiners and adjectival inflection. It was found that the four highly proficient late speakers of Dutch show non-target-like performance in their data involving agreement on both definite determiners and adjectives, regularly overgeneralize to the common gender, and tend to produce fewer indefinite than definite phrases in comparison to the monolinguals and early bilinguals. The findings in this study are discussed in light of previous research regarding the different mechanisms of child and adult (second) language acquisition of grammatical gender in Dutch (Blom et al., 2006, 2008; Prevost and White, 2000; White, 2003). The evidence from the current experiment suggests that: a. adults use two different routes for acquiring gender agreement in Dutch - a lexical route for agreement at the determiner, and a rule-based route for agreement at the adjective (Blom et al., 2006, 2008); b. adult speakers may have the knowledge of the rules of gender agreement in Dutch but are not successful in applying the rules consistently in their production (Prevost and White, 2000; White, 2003).Show less

The present study focuses on crosslinguistic differences of intrusion of the spatial domain within the temporal domain by comparing Native English speakers to Mandarin-English bilinguals. With deviation in linguistic construction of space = time metaphors between the two languages, the main question subject to this study is whether linguistic differences bear influence on the conceptualization of the abstract domain of time. Furthermore, an insight is given in the manner abstract concepts are concreted by the human mind with an emphasis on bilingual processing. As the processing within the bilingual mind has been subjected to much debate over recent year, an attempt to reconcile various views has been laid bare. The present study exists of two replicated tasks which yielded different conclusions in their original state. While the results of the present study remain inconclusive, one task hints at a global difference between Mandarin-English bilinguals' conception of time and English native speakers' conception of time. The other task has not revealed any implication on linguistic processing due to crosslinguistic differences.Show less
