Vanuit de bestaande...Show moreIn dit onderzoek staat de volgende onderzoeksvraag centraal: ‘In hoeverre hebben interpersoonlijk vertrouwen en altruïsme invloed op het aantal coronabesmettingen in een land?’. Vanuit de bestaande literatuur zijn er twee hypothesen opgesteld, namelijk dat interpersoonlijk vertrouwen en altruïsme geen negatieve relatie hebben op de coronabesmettingen. De verwachting is dan ook dat landen met een hoge score in interpersoonlijk vertrouwen en altruïsme minder coronabesmettingen hebben. Om een antwoord te gegeven op deze vraag is er kwantitatief onderzoek gedaan naar de vertrouwen scores en altruïsme cijfers op de coronabesmettingen, waarbij er een deductieve opzet werd aangehouden. De data die hiervoor gebruikt is, is afkomstig van de Global Preferences Survey, Our World in Data en The World Bank. Het BBP per hoofd van de bevolking, de sex-ratio en de mediane leeftijd zijn gebruikt als controlevariabelen in het onderzoek. Uit de OLS-regressies blijkt dat wanneer de controlevariabelen worden toegevoegd de R-kwadraat toeneemt. Ook komt er naar voren dat altruïsme een negatieve relatie heeft met de coronabesmettingen. Echter, is deze relatie statistisch insignificant, waardoor de nulhypothese wordt aangenomen. Daarnaast komt naar voren dat interpersoonlijk vertrouwen een positief relatie heeft met de besmettingen, maar wanneer de controlevariabelen worden toegevoegd wordt dit verband negatief. Ook wordt deze relatie niet significant bevonden, waardoor de nulhypothese wordt geaccepteerd. Om een antwoord te gegeven op de onderzoeksvraag, kan er dus gesteld worden dat interpersoonlijk vertrouwen en altruïsme een negatieve relatie hebben met de coronabesmettingen. Echter, hebben deze bevindingen geen statistisch significant relatie met de coronabesmettingen. Voor eventueel vervolgonderzoek kunnen er meer landen worden meegenomen in de regressie. Ook zouden er meer controlevariabelen kunnen worden toegevoegd.Show less

The Dutch health care system contains a unique form of social assistance: the income-based health care allowance. This study aims to analyze the effect of receiving a health care allowance on the health care utilization of low-income individuals in the Netherlands. The hypothesis states that people with a low income who receive a health care allowance make more use of health care services than people with a low income who do not receive a health care allowance. The results of this study show that there is a significant positive relationship between receiving a health care allowance and health care utilization. However, the results were only significant for one of the three chosen bandwidths and the model proved to not fit the data specifically well. Therefore, this study concludes that there is not enough evidence to fully endorse the effect. This study does produce results that open up avenues for further research and policy recommendations.Show less

Given that these types of...Show moreThe COVID-19 pandemic has caused both academic and financial hardship for students pursuing higher education in the Netherlands, including study delays and layoffs. Given that these types of incidents have a bearing on students' overall financial behaviour and that student loans are a common tool among students to finance their postsecondary education, one would expect these effects of the pandemic to have a direct impact on student borrowing behaviour. However, there is another variable to take into account, namely students' financial preferences, particularly with regard to having or taking on debt. Accordingly, this study reports on the degree of debt aversion and how it affects the borrowing behaviour of students in Dutch higher education during this crisis. This relationship is examined by means of three hypotheses and corresponding multiple regression analyses with moderation effects, using data obtained through the use of a survey and an additive index measuring the degree of debt aversion. This research has shown that the financial preference of debt aversion has a negative impact on the borrowing behaviour of students. In other words, the higher a student’s degree of debt aversion is, the lower their monthly amount of student loans will be. This relationship does not differ depending on whether or not a student has been directly affected by the pandemic and the effects thereof.Show less

This is done for 73 countries with multiple regression analyses for two different dependent variables. For the effect of time preference on carbon pricing initiatives a tobit and linear regression are conducted for the year 2015. The results show that patience has an insignificant positive effect on carbon pricing initiatives as percentage of global emissions as well as jurisdiction’s emissions. For renewable energy consumption, a linear regression analysis over the years 2005-2015 with fixed country effects is conducted and a distinction between OECD and non-OECD countries is made. Here, the results indicate that for all the countries an increase in patience scores leads to a significant decrease of renewable energy consumption. However, for developed countries, an increase in patience scores leads to a significant increase in renewable energy consumption. For developing countries this is not the case. An increase in patience scores leads to a significant decrease of renewable energy consumption. However, when developing countries rise in democracy scores, the percentage of renewable energy consumption increases significantly. Therefore, a policy advice can be derived from this study. In order to support climate change mitigation a distinction between developed and developing countries should be made. Developed countries should be encouraged to be more patient in order to have a higher percentage of renewable energy consumption. For developing countries, the focus should not be on encouraging more patience, but on encouraging democracy.Show less

Dit onderzoek is gedaan aan de hand van data uit de Global Preference Survey. Deze data is verzameld op een representatieve manier in meer dan zeventig landen en betreft de economisch voorkeuren per land. Solidariteit is onderzocht aan de hand van vier indicatoren, namelijk gezondheid, werkeloosheid, inkomensongelijkheid en onderwijs. Tevens is solidariteit een uitdrukking van de verzorgingsstaat. De bevindingen tonen aan dat er een positief verband is tussen solidariteit en risicovoorkeuren, wat in lijn is met de literatuur. Dit houdt dus in dat landen met een hogere mate van solidariteit meer risicogedrag vertonen. Deze bevindingen zijn belangrijk aangezien er op basis van dit model vervolgonderzoek kan worden gedaan. Het verband tussen risicovoorkeuren en solidariteit als uitdrukking van de verzorgingsstaat, wat gevonden is in dit onderzoek, geeft dus een gedegen aanzet tot verder onderzoek binnen dit veld.Show less

In accordance with one view, anti-immigration attitudes weaken support for redistribution, as those who hold negative attitudes towards immigration supposedly consider immigrants to be “free-riders” who disproportionately benefit from the welfare state. Nevertheless, there are competing views suggesting that the same negative attitudes towards immigration can arouse residents’ subjective income insecurities, which then leads them to support welfare solidarity and redistribution. This thesis analyzes evidence collected through the European Social Survey (ESS) in support of the latter view. More specifically, this research finds that negative attitudes towards immigration lead to higher support for redistribution when subjective income insecurity increases, whilst pro-immigration attitudes also lead to support for redistribution when there is a higher percentage of foreign-born citizens.Show less

Even though the European climate...Show moreThe ratification of the Paris Agreement by the European Union has determined its trajectory and set in motion the green transition of the European economy. Even though the European climate ambitions seem political of nature, the European Central Bank has recently shown its willingness to support the Union’s climate ambitions within its institutional capacity. European policy research organisations put forward new ideas on greening policy instruments, which also touch upon other institutional characteristics of the ECB. However, the monetary authority is de jure independent of exogenous actors in determining its policies and strategy. Recently though, under Lagarde's presidency, the ECB has for the first time opened up to ideas from civil society, think tanks and academia when defining its new long-term "green" strategy. While the new strategy is still on the drawing board, theories from discursive institutionalism assert that ideas resonate the ECB’s communication strategy, through discourse. When juxtaposing and comparing the results from two qualitative research methods, the study concluded that specific, programmatic ideas are not significantly represented in the ECB's discourse. Instead, more a general and normative ideational shift has taken place where a stronger and more decisive change in tone has become visible in the ECB’s discourse on its green strategy that can rather be explained by other exogenous events and factors.Show less

Drie onderwerpen, respectievelijk...Show moreSamenvatting Deze studie onderzoekt de invloed van religieuze activiteiten op economische risicovoorkeuren aan de hand van een globale kwantitatieve data-analyse. Drie onderwerpen, respectievelijk het effect van religieuze activiteiten op risicobereidheid, het verschil in risicobereidheid tussen Islamieten en Christenen en het mogelijke interactie-effect tussen het type religie, de mate van religieuze activiteiten en de risicobereidheid worden onderzocht. Dit wordt gedaan aan de hand van data afkomstig uit de Global Preference Survey (Falk et al., 2018). Er wordt een licht positief significant verband gevonden tussen religieuze activiteiten en risicobereidheid, terwijl dit onderzoek niet vindt dat er een verschil in risicobereidheid tussen de hoofdreligies Christendom en Islam is. Omdat economische risicobereidheid een positieve invloed heeft op de welvaart en de totale factorproductiviteit, is het van belang dat overheden oog hebben voor de mate van risicobereidheid van de bevolking van een land. Met name na een pandemie – zoals de huidige COVID-19-pandemie – is het van belang dat mensen niet te risicomijdend zijn, opdat economische ontwikkelingen, zoals bijvoorbeeld ondernemersactiviteiten, dan stagneren. Het promoten van religieuze activiteiten binnen Christelijke landen en met name binnen Islamitische landen vanwege de lage mate van risicobereidheid door bijvoorbeeld kerkgemeenschappen te subsidiëren, zodat er meer religieuze activiteiten worden uitgevoerd in dit land, is een mogelijk beleidsinstrument. Soortgelijke activiteiten van niet-religieuze mensen, zoals mediteren of het beoefenen van mindfulness kunnen mogelijk eenzelfde effect hebben op de risicobereidheid vanwege de overeenkomsten tussen deze activiteiten. Dit biedt mogelijk ook beleidsmogelijkheden voor overheden van niet-religieuze landen om de risicobereidheid te laten toenemen op basis van dit onderzoek.Show less

The present study seeks to estimate the effects of the Brazilian Conditional Cash Transfer program Bolsa Familia on the beneficiary’s participation in the informal economy. The hypothesis of this work is that Bolsa Familia stimulates informality, as it decreases the probability of beneficiaries to get a formal job contract. To analyse the relationship and verify the hypothesis the paper employs data of the year 2019 provided by (PNAD/IBGE). The results indicate a negative relationship between receiving Bolsa Familia and having a formal job contract, and therefore, a reduced probability for beneficiaries to acquire a formal job contract. However, as the result is not statistically significant there is not enough evidence to sustain such a conclusion, and there is space for more research to be done with regards to this relationship.Show less

Door de komst van het leenstelsel zijn er...Show moreDoor de recente verandering van beleid omtrent studiefinanciering in Nederland is er voor studenten nu in plaats van een prestatiebeurs, een leenstelsel. Door de komst van het leenstelsel zijn er veel nieuwe factoren die nog niet onderzocht zijn. Dit onderzoek tracht te onderzoeken of er een verschil is in leenaversie tussen studenten uit het oude prestatiebeursstelsel en studenten uit het nieuwe leenstelsel. Verder zal gekeken worden of leenaversie effect heeft op het studiegedrag van studenten waarbij het onderzoek zich beperkt tot het hebben van een bijbaan en de (verwachte) studieduur. Hieruit vloeit de onderzoeksvraag: “In hoeverre beïnvloedt leenaversie, voortvloeiend uit het leenstelsel, het studiegedrag van studenten in de Nederlandse samenleving?”. Met eigen verzamelde data is een dataset tot stand gekomen van 124 respondenten waarvan er 59 in het prestatiebeursstelsel zaten en 61 in het leenstelsel. Verschillende regressies tonen aan dat er een verschil is in leenaversie tussen de groep studenten die in het oude prestatiebeursstelsel zaten en de groep studenten uit het nieuwe leenstelsel. Zo gaan studenten uit het prestatiebeursstelsel liever een lening uit de weg en zijn dus meer leenavers. Verder werd gevonden dat leenaversie een goede voorspeller is voor het wel of niet hebben van een bijbaan. Studenten die meer leenavers zijn, hebben eerder een bijbaan. Opmerkelijk is dat het gemiddelde inkomen dat zij met deze bijbaan verdienen hierbij niet uitmaakt. Leenaversie en studieduur bleken niet met elkaar in verband te staan. Leenavers zijn heeft dus geen invloed op hoe lang een student over een opleiding doet. In conclusie valt te stellen dat het invoeren van het leenstelsel tot gevolg heeft dat studenten minder leenavers zijn. Het lijkt er op dat leenaversie vooral een persoonlijke eigenschap is die niet beïnvloed wordt door overheidsingrijpen.Show less
