It examines Dutch and English news pamphlets about the assassination of King Henry IV of France in 1610. The thesis argues that news about the assassination circulated in an international public sphere. This international public sphere was characterized by a large appetite for foreign news, a well-informed ‘public’ and most importantly, a commonly established international anti-Catholic discourse, which enabled news to travel across national boundaries. The Dutch discourse depicted Henry’s assassination as a joint papal and Spanish plot to depose Henry and to reclaim the rebellious Netherlands. In England, news about Henry’s death was explicitly linked to the debate about the Oath of Allegiance. Despite these national differences, both discourses drew on a socially constructed image of the Jesuits as a tightly organized conspiratorial group. It referred to a standardized set of beliefs, stereotypes and sentiments that epitomized a view of militant Catholicism, commanded by the pope, the Jesuits and Spain. This anti-Catholic discourse was based on a transnational Protestant mentality, as it consistently referred to key moments in the Protestant history of persecution, plots and assassinations. The thesis also expresses some reservations about the level of participation in this international public sphere. Particularly in England, pamphleteering was confined to the capital, and the central government seemed to have played an active part in regulating access to the international public sphere, both by practices of censorship and propaganda. It hence follows that news about the assassination of Henry IV was debated in an international public sphere, but that the level of access to this public sphere strongly depended on the specific national context.Show less

Hier kreeg hij in 1635 financiële steun van koning Christiaan IV om naar...Show moreAan het begin van de zeventiende eeuw was Karel van Mander III werkzaam als schilder aan het Deense hof in Kopenhagen. Hier kreeg hij in 1635 financiële steun van koning Christiaan IV om naar Italië toe te reizen. Op weg naar Rome zou hij een tussenstop gemaakt hebben in de Republiek. Hier zou hij in het atelier van Rembrandt zijn geweest, waar hij diens Ontvoering van Ganymedes zag. Naar dit werk zou Van Mander III zijn versie van Ganymedes geschilderd hebben. Het schilderij is verloren gegaan, maar is wel bekend van een prent van Albert Haelwegh. Tevens is het werk terug te zien op de schoorsteenmantel in het Galant gezelschap van Pieter de Hoogh in Lissabon. Het is interessant om te bekijken hoe Van Mander III Rembrandt heeft willen overtreffen door een schilderij te creëren met een gelijksoortige uitwerking van het Ganymedes-thema. Om dit te onderbouwen wordt naar verschillende punten gekeken: Waarom was het Ganymedes-motief in de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw zo populair? Hoe werd Ganymedes thema uitgebeeld tot aan de zeventiende eeuw? Uit welke schriftelijke bronnen komt het verhaal en wat zegt Karel van Mander I precies over dit onderwerp in zijn Schilder-boeck? Het essay wordt afgesloten met een korte vergelijking tussen Rembrandt en Van Mander III aangaande het Ganymedes-thema. Hieruit zal de conclusie worden getrokken op wat voor manier Van Mander III de aemulatio is aangegaan met Rembrandt. Het Ganymedes-thema is vooral in de zestiende eeuw populair in de zestiende eeuw in Italië, waarbij de versie uit 1551 van Michelangelo misschien wel de bekendste is. In de Noordelijke Nederlanden komt het thema in de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw maar incidenteel voor. Pas na de Beeldenstorm ontstond een interesse naar dergelijke historische en mythologische voorstellingen. De mythe van Ganymedes heeft drie verschillende klassieken bronnen: Homerus, Vergilius en Ovidius. Homerus schrijft in de Ilias over Ganymedes als een ideale schoonheid. Ganymedes werd, nadat Jupiter geobsedeerd raakte door het uiterlijk van de jongeman, vervoerd van het aardse bestaan naar het hemelse koninkrijk vervoerd. Over een adelaar wordt nog niet gesproken. In de Aeneïs door Vergilius wordt Ganymedes neergezet als koningskind, dat zich verzet tegen zijn ontvoering. Vergilius biedt een dramatisch scenario, waarbij jankende honden en schrikbarende personages een rol spelen. Daarbij schrijft Vergilius dat de vogel slechts in opdracht handelt van Jupiter. De roofvogel is dus niet de veranderende gedaante van Jupiter. Vooral Ovidius is van belang geweest in de Italiaanse renaissance. In de Metamorphosen verandert Jupiter zichzelf in een adelaar om de jonge Ganymedes te ontvoeren. Daarbij wordt Ganymedes neergezet als archetype voor de ideale, jeugdige schoonheid. Het Ganymedes-thema heeft een aantal betekenissen. Allereerst kan de voorstelling de winter, de regen of het sterrenbeeld Waterman uitdrukken. Daarnaast kan het thema een representatie zijn van homoseksualiteit. Ten derde kan Ganymedes een Christelijke betekenis dragen, waarbij de onschuldige ziel naar de hemel stijgt. Pas in 1435 wordt door Alberti in De Pictura voor het eerst beschreven hoe Ganymedes uitgebeeld moet worden. Ganymedes moet geïdealiseerd worden met gladde wenkbrauwen en mooie zachte dijen. Van Mander I schrijft niet veel over het voorkomen van Ganymedes in het Schilder-boeck: “So schoon dat hij weerdigh was den schenker Iuppiter te wesen.” Er wordt vooral de nadruk gelegd op de reine ziel van Ganymedes: “Op Ganymedes wordt verstaen de menschlijcke siele de ghene die alderweinichst met de lichaemlijcke onreinicheden der quade lust en is beblecht: dese wort van gode beccozen en tot hem ghetrocken.” Wel wordt beschreven dat Jupiter zichzelf verandert in een adelaar. In de literaire bronnen wordt dus niet verwezen naar Ganymedes als kind. Om te kunnen onderbouwen op wat voor manier Van Mander III de wedijver is aangegaan met Rembrandt, volgt een korte vergelijking tussen de werken. In het achterhoofd moet worden gehouden dat het schilderij van Rembrandt vergeleken wordt met een prent van Haelwegh naar Van Mander III. Omdat het om twee werken gaat van verschillend materiaalgebruik, is de vergelijking voornamelijk gebaseerd op vormgeving en inhoud. Allereerst moet gemeld worden dat de vogel in beide werken een steenarend voorstelt. Een verschil dat vervolgens direct opvalt, is dat de Ganymedes in het schilderij van Rembrandt vastgehouden wordt met de snavel van het roofdier. In de uitbeelding van Van Mander III wordt het kind vastgehouden met zijn poten. De steenarend vangt zijn prooi nooit met zijn snavel, maar met zijn poten. Daarbij heeft deze vogel in de voorstelling van Rembrandt te korte vleugels. De vogel van Karel van Mander III sluit dichter aan de realiteit dan het dier van Rembrandt. Door de grotere vleugels en de krachtige klauwen van de vogel liet Van Mander III het kind van de grond afkomen. Iets wat in het schilderij van Rembrandt minder goed lijkt te lukken. Verder kijkend naar de details van de twee voorstellingen, valt op dat de Ganymedes in het werk van Rembrandt meerdere kersen vast houdt. Van Mander III schildert daarentegen de jongen met een rond stuk fruit in zijn hand. Daarbij urineert het huilende kind van Van Mander III niet, maar de Ganymedes in de uitbeelding van Rembrandt wel. Eerder was te lezen dat het iconologisch programma van het schilderij van Rembrandt zeer discutabel is. De vraag die open blijft, is waar de Ganymedes nu precies symbool voor zou hebben kunnen staan. Dat Van Mander III daarom bewust kiest voor een duidelijke symboliek van de appel en het kind, laat zijn kennis zien over de ideeën over het christendom. Ook maakt Van Mander III een veel duidelijke verwijzing naar het Ganymedes verhaal door bovenaan de maaltijd van de goden uit te beelden. Om de conclusie te trekken op wat voor manier er sprake is geweest van aemulatio tussen Van Mander III en Rembrandt, moeten we ons realiseren hoe de zeventiende eeuwer tegen aemlutatio aankeek. In het leerproces van de schilder was het geoorloofd om onderwerpen en motieven te ontlenen van andere schilders, vooral tussen de meester en zijn leerling. Van Mander III heeft waarschijnlijk geen les gehad van Rembrandt. Toch schildert Van Mander III een gelijksoortig schilderij, waarin het opvallend is dat zijn schilderij dichter bij natuur staat. Van Mander III weet een meer natuurgetrouwe uitbeelding van de adelaar en het kind neer te zetten. Zijn variant op de Ganymedes sluit nauwer aan bij de mythologie en de christelijke iconologie. Naar mijn mening heeft Van Mander III dus Rembrandt overtroffen door middel van zijn kennis over iconologie en anatomie. Werner bevestigt mijn idee dat Van Mander III Rembrandt heeft overtroffen door zijn lofdicht over het kunstwerk.Show less

It brings to attention relevant examples of art works and their creators, proving that the evolution of the book-object has now reached another revolutionary point, similar to the one that allowed the Futurist movement to flourish. The thesis finds its inherent relevance in the sense of emergency that today surrounds both book studies and the paper book. Furthermore, it covers a less explored niche, as it refers only in passing to artists’ books. This paper wishes to shed light on the alternative life of the printed books – forgotten, discarded, abandoned – and, ultimately, to prove that contemporary book art is mostly a product of the insecurities of the digital medium. In focusing on the visual and intellectual reinterpretation of the book, it will ultimately reflects upon the future of the book this age of digital uncertainty.Show less

In het antieke Rome bestond dit beeld niet. De personen die werkzaam waren in de uitvaartbranche werden geweerd uit de gemeenschap en als ze de gemeenschap moesten betreden, werden ze verplicht om door middel van kleding en attributen anderen te waarschuwen voor hun komst. In dit onderzoek zal de oorzaak voor deze negatieve houding ten opzichte van uitvaartpersoneel worden vastgesteld. The thesis question thus is:‘what formed Galton’s ideas about eugenics, and how did his contemporaries in British society respond to his ideas?’ Influences from Galton's personal life led to his interest in eugenics. At first Galton's contemporaries did not see Galton's concept of eugenics as a practical possibility, but later in his life he did find people who continued his mission. During the Watergate Affair Nixon committed various crimes, such as the obstruction of justice and the abuse of power. He resigned on August 9 1974, the only American President ever to have done so. His successor, President Ford, pardoned him for these crimes. Nixon has never been convicted for them, to the dismay of many Americans. By now Nixon has become a controversial figure in American history. He is and will be always be remembered for the Watergate Affair. He also dragged out the American involvement in Vietnam for several years, resulting in massive anti-war protests and outpourings of great hatred against him. However, Nixon was also the American President who succeeded in achieving a détente with the Soviet Union, normalising relations with China and initiating the first SALT-treaty to limit nuclear arms. Moreover, he bettered the plight of Native Americans and steered through Congress important environmental legislation. Nixon, whose fate was essentially a tragic one, has inspired writers, poets, playwrights, directors and musicians to produce very interesting works of art. Philip Roth wrote ‘Our Gang’, a political satire depicting Nixon, amongst other things, as chief devil. Gore Vidal wrote a play about him, ‘An Evening with Richard Nixon’, as well as the historical novel ‘Burr’ about Aaron Burr, another villain in American history, which displays interesting parallels with Nixon and his time. The film ‘All the President’s Men’ is by far the most well-known work discussed in this thesis, dealing with the two young reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the ‘Washington Post’, who played an important role in uncovering the affair. Robert Altman’s ‘Secret Honor’ and Oliver Stone’s ‘Nixon’ not only portray Nixon, but also examine his cultural significance. The same is true for ‘The Assassination of Richard Nixon’, in which Nixon is not an actual character, but the figurehead of a sick and dishonest society. Ron Howard’s ‘Frost/Nixon’, the most recent work discussed in this thesis, paints a more positive and humane picture of Nixon. This is in accordance with a general tendency, within works of popular culture, to depict Nixon with much more depth, with more attention to Nixon as a human-being, and in a more balanced and positive way.Show less

The first chapter estimates the physical extent of the city and its suburbs. The second chapter studies the size and productivity of Antioch’s territory. On the basis of urbanisation rates, urban and rural population densities and ‘carrying capacity’ various scenarios are sketched to determine more and less likely figures. In the final chapter several ideas are considered towards explaining the population of Antioch and its hinterland.Show less

Not only in England he became famous for his criticism of the French Revolution, also in the whole of Europe he was soon regarded as the 'father of conservatism'. In this Thesis I investigate how Burke's influence was in the Netherlands. Beginning with the Dutch reception of his Reflections, published in 1790, I examined how his influence worked out in the nineteenth century. In European perspective, after several decades Burke’s image was changed from a conservative to a liberal, giving more emphasis on Burke’s efforts for a free market economy and a limited government. Was this the case in the Netherlands as well? This Thesis shows that in the Netherlands Burke’s image as conservative was far more durable. The antirevolutionary statesman Groen van Prinsterer did well in claiming Burke for his party. Liberal politicians and scientists like C.W. Opzoomer and Robert Fruin attempted to change this, but they didn’t succeed. Against the antirevolutionary context Groen van Prinsterer had Burke framed, the liberals were not able to frame Burke as a liberal statesman. As the successor of Groen van Prinsterer, Abraham Kuyper also was heavily influenced by Burke, especially in his first part of his career. Throughout his books and speeches, he transfers the ‘antirevolutionary’ Burke into the twentieth century, although Kuypers rely on Burke was much more thematic and instrumental than it was for Groen van Prinsterer.Show less

In this thesis a systematic comparison between the writings of two prominent English polemicists is made, both of whom were active in the period 1618 and 1628: the Catholic Richard Verstegan and...Show moreIn this thesis a systematic comparison between the writings of two prominent English polemicists is made, both of whom were active in the period 1618 and 1628: the Catholic Richard Verstegan and the Puritan Thomas Scott, both of whom were in a religiously-tinted exile in the Low Countries in this period – the former in Antwerp, and the later in Utrecht. While of different generations and religious orientations, both urgently wanted to influence English public opinion on the continental conflicts of this period. Their polemics, such as Vox Populi and Londons Looking-glasse, are subjected to a comparative analysis. The goals and expectations of these polemicists in regards to the religious upheaval in Europe – such as the renewed conflict between Spain and the United Provinces and the escalating Bohemian crisis – are explored, as well as their subsequent appeals for war or peace.Show less

This thesis...Show moreFollowing the end of the Cold War the post-communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe experienced numerous rapid changes. The transition concerned also the sphere of migration. This thesis focuses on trafficking in human beings and labour exploitation of migrant workers as they gradually caught public attention in the Czech Republic in late 1990s. It researches how and why did the Czech NGOs’ approach towards trafficking change between 1998 and 2012. It focuses on the problematic understanding and punishability of labour exploitation within and outside the phenomenon of trafficking. It follows the development of trafficking in the Czech Republic after the end of Cold War and shows the interaction between governmental and nongovernmental approaches towards trafficking, labour exploitation and human rights violations of migrant workers.Show less
