Moreover, it identifies the different approach of the indigenous communities towards the land they live on, versus the economically driven approach of the government. As the indigenous population is significant in Ecuador, the government had (and has) no choice but to take their requests regarding the conservation of nature into account. By examining the reaction of the indigenous people following proposals for rules and regulation concerning extractive activities and the conservation of indigenous occupied land, one can be able to understand how the indigenous people perceive extractivism. It is important to try to understand whether the indigenous population perceive extractivism as a ‘resource curse’ or as a ‘resource blessing’.Show less

However, when it comes to jumping from the MI level to the high-income (HI) one, things become far more complex, as severe growth slowdowns become more frequent. This phenomenon, namely: the ‘middle-income trap’ (MIT), refers to the inherent challenges MI countries face in order to reach the HI status. The MIT is present in many comparative studies and policy models as empirical evidence suggests there are shared difficulties present at this level of income, and although it is still an ambiguous and undefined concept, its potential usefulness to guide policy-making is unmistakable, since the idea of a trap can be understood as universally applicable for developing economies struggling to achieve sustainable growth. Three bodies of MIT literature and their respective prescribed set of policies are categorized and analyzed in this study to determine which one can best attributed to the unique and successful case of Chile.Show less

By determining three variables, presidential diplomacy, ideological convergence and the absence of regional hegemons, Latin American regional organizations will be assessed. The first chapter will provide an overview of the analytical tools deployed for this analysis. Subsequently, in the second chapter, historical trends will be established by considering the Latin American Free Trade Association (LAFTA) and the Andean Pact. Finally, the influence of the three variables on two contemporary regional organizations, the Pacific Alliance and Mercosur, will be analysed in the third chapter. The hypothesis directing this analysis is as follows: “Presidential diplomacy, ideological convergence and the absence of a regional hegemon have the potential of, or already have had, a negative influence on the Pacific Alliance and Mercosur’s stability and the achievement of their long-term objectives.”Show less

No início do ano 2000 novos atores apareceram no Brasil especialmente na cidade de São Paulo e muitos entre eles tinham como objetivo principal a luta contra a corrupção. Após alguns anos, estes atores desenvolveram métodos inovadores para lutar contra a corrupção através de iniciativas de prevenção. Para fazer isto os cidadãos foram envolvidos nos projetos de prevenção da corrupção e começaram a ter um papel significativo nos programas destas associações. Na pesquisa se analisará quais são os métodos inovadores introduzidos pelas ONGs, de que maneira os cidadãos são chamados a participar e qual é o papel que eles têm nessas iniciativas.Show less

Vanaf de regering van...Show moreIn deze scriptie staat het cliëntelisme in de Argentijnse voetbalwereld centraal. Voetbal heeft in Argentinië altijd een prominente rol gespeeld in combinatie met politiek. Vanaf de regering van president Juan Domingo Perón in de periode 1946 1955 begon voetbal een steeds grotere rol te spelen in de Argentijnse politiek. Deze combinatie van voetbal en politiek werd gekenmerkt door twee aspecten: het creëren van een nationale culturele identiteit als gevolg van de massa-immigratie en het creëren van een loyale groep aanhangers van het regime. Voetbal was de manier om een eenheid te vormen en werd dan ook gezien als een belangrijk instrument. In 1978 wordt dit instrument op een andere wijze geütiliseerd. Tijdens het dictatoriale regime van generaal Jorge Videla wordt het Wereldkampioenschap Voetbal gebruikt als politieke propaganda en manipulatiemiddel om de gewelddadige situatie in het land te maskeren. Ondanks het verschil in regimes en beweegredenen, werd er gebruik gemaakt van hetzelfde instrument voor politieke doeleinden, namelijk het voetbal. Deze politieke aard van het Argentijnse voetbal blijft ook in de 21ste eeuw voortduren.Show less

Hierbij wordt gekeken naar het gebruik van de besproeiingen tijdens Plan Colombia als bestrijdingsvorm van het Colombiaanse drugsprobleem en de fumigaties als verzwakkingsmiddel van de in Colombia aanwezige rebellie, overwegend in het geval van de FARC. Onder leiding van de Verenigde Staten is er een toxische en interventionistische oorlog gevoerd op het territorium van het Latijns-Amerikaanse land. De uiteindelijke resultaten hiervan zijn echter teleurstellend te noemen.Show less

Theory on political disaffection, social capital and political participation together with the modern political history of Mexico and the #YoSoy132 movement are extensively analysed in order to examine the following hypothesis: in the case of the #YoSoy132 movement, political disaffection resulted in an increasing desire among the youth to participate in politics in order to oppose the Mexican regime. Since these youngsters badly distrust political parties and institutions, they are seeking unconventional ways to engage in politics. By producing new forms of social capital, the movement was able to grow and exert influence and power on politics while staying on the side lines to not become part of the “bad” practices of the Mexican government.Show less
Hedendaags is er een onderwerp op internationaal niveau regelmatig in het nieuws en het onderwerp van debat, namelijk het verbeteren van de toegang en kwaliteit in het hoger onderwijs.Ook in Chili...Show moreHedendaags is er een onderwerp op internationaal niveau regelmatig in het nieuws en het onderwerp van debat, namelijk het verbeteren van de toegang en kwaliteit in het hoger onderwijs.Ook in Chili is dit een belangrijk en veel besproken onderwerp. Na vele studenten mobilisaties die protesteerden tegen de ongelijkheid in toegankelijkheid in het universitair onderwijs met eisen als hervormingen hiervan, is de Chileense president Michelle Bachelet met een nieuw voorstel gekomen, universeel gratis universitair onderwijs. Dit is het toegankelijker maken van het universitaire onderwijs door onbetaald onderwijs aan te bieden aan studenten. Deze scriptie behandelt het debat over de mogelijke impact van dit voorstel dat gaande is in Chili en wordt er een afweging gemaakt vande voor- en tegen argumenten van deze discussie. De centrale doelstelling is het analyseren van het overheidsbeleid van de twee ambtstermijnen van Michelle Bachelet in het universitaire onderwijs met betrekking tot toegankelijkheid en sociale ongelijkheid in Chili. Het onderzoek is gedaan aan de hand van de bestuderingvan relevante literatuur. De centrale vraagstelling luidt als volgt: “wat waren de positieve en negatieve gevolgen van het universitair onderwijs beleid in Chili tijdens de ambtsperiode van Michelle Bachelet met betrekking tot toegankelijkheid en sociale ongelijkheid?”. In hoofdstuk 1 zal de rol van universitair onderwijs en de rol met betrekking tot sociale mobiliteit en sociaal kapitaal behandeld worden waarna ook de toegankelijkheid en sociale ongelijkheid in het universitair onderwijs vanuit een theoretische context bekeken wordt. Vervolgens zullen deze thema’s in hoofdstuk 2 in de geschiedenis en de actuele context van Chili geplaatst worden en zal het overheidsbeleid besproken worden van beide ambtstermijnen, 2006-2010 en 2014-heden, van president Bachelet in het universitair onderwijs en de studentenbeweging tijdens haar eerste ambt in 2006 en het massale protest in 2011, waar haar voorstel voor gratuïteitin haar tweede ambt een gevolg van is.In hoofdstuk 3 zal gekeken worden naar het discours dat plaatsvindt over dit onderwerp, waar meningen en gedachtes van Chileense burgers en onderzoekers in voor- en tegen argumenten en actoren naar voren worden gebracht waarna er een afweging gemaakt zal worden.
