This thesis looks at central and local government policies to analyse why the Borough Council decided to make this decision that would drastically change Banbury from a small market town into an industrial centre for many different businesses. In order to do this it looks at the build up to signing the Act and what the main motivating factors were. It tests five hypotheses of why the Council decided to expand: opportunism, the desire to increase the rateable value of Banbury, the need to diversify industry, the Borough Council's need to increase their own power, and finally, fear of the town dying.Show less

The main question of this...Show moreThis thesis intends to follow Walker in her quest of opening up discussions toward a renegotiation of history; its pasts and presents; ambiguities and openendedness. The main question of this thesis is how Walker's book rendition of After the Deluge connects discussions on racial inequalities and the visualization of narratives with a reworking of the divide between the socio-cultural and natural realm through the use of 'muck'. One of the most important aspects of Walker’s work is an interrogation - through art - of the ways in which we tell and visualize our histories; stories which are entanglements of fact and fiction, of desire and shame. In After the Deluge specifically, this is combined with a renegotiation of how we look at the divide between the socio-cultural and the natural realm. In witnessing a disaster like Hurricane Katrina, it becomes apparent that there is no such divide. The messiness of life as both social, cultural and natural, is explored in Kara Walker’s work in ways that also rematerialize notions such as race, sexuality and history.Show less

Hoe krijgt het ‘Marokkanendiscours’ bij de PVV precies vorm, waaraan...Show moreEen analyse van het parlementaire discours van Geert Wilders en de PVV ten aanzien van Marokkanen vanaf 2004 tot en met 2014. Hoe krijgt het ‘Marokkanendiscours’ bij de PVV precies vorm, waaraan ontleent dit zijn functionaliteit en binnen welk ideologisch kader kunnen we dit discours plaatsen? Aangetoond wordt hoe in het PVV-discours door generalisering en homogenisering vorm wordt gegeven aan een afgebakende outgroup van Marokkanen, waartoe in principe alle personen van Marokkaanse afkomst worden gerekend, ook als deze de Nederlandse nationaliteit hebben en in Nederland zijn geboren. Deze groep wordt gehomogeniseerd als ware er één Marokkaanse identiteit, welke gelijk wordt gesteld aan de moslim-identiteit (van alle Marokkanen, praktiserend religieus of niet). Vervolgens wordt het verschijnsel criminaliteit gelinkt aan de cultuur en de religie van Marokkanen. De aldus gecriminaliseerde outgroup wordt vervolgens afgezet tegen de ingroup (‘wij’). Van die ingroup blijft enigszins vaag wie daartoe precies behoren (‘de Nederlandse belastingbetaler’), maar duidelijk wordt gemaakt dat de Marokkanen daar niet toe behoren. Zij fungeren dus als ‘the negative other’. De Nederlandse ‘elite’ die wel deel uit lijkt te maken van de ingroup, pleegt ‘verraad’ door het probleem (‘megaprobleem’, zelfs) van de Marokkanen – of het nu gaat om criminalisering of ‘islamisering’ - te ontkennen of te onderschatten. Zij vormen als het ware de ‘landverraders’ binnen de ingroup. Ook schijnbaar ‘aangepaste’ Marokkanen wordt gebrek aan loyaliteit verweten, ofwel vanwege hun religie (niet valt immers uit te sluiten dat zij doen aan ‘taqiyya’), ofwel vanwege hun dubbele nationaliteit, of beide. Of ze daadwerkelijk religieus zijn, of zich überhaupt verbonden voelen met Marokko, doet daarbij niet ter zake. Feitelijk kan een Marokkaan dus niets doen om tot de ingroup te gaan behoren: hij blijft hiervan door zijn hoedanigheid van ‘Marokkaan’ uitgesloten.Show less

This dissertation tries...Show moreLudwig Von Mises is consensually seen as the father of modern libertarianism, but little is known about the deeper roots of his uncompromising laissez-faire way of thinking. This dissertation tries to present a better understanding of the origins of Mises thought and, more particularly, how Mises, from a very technical economist before the First World War, turned into an ideologist in his book Nation, State, and Economy (1919). Through a careful description of the historical background an analysis of the evolution of his political thought from 1907 to 1919, it is argued that the three Mises’ main biographies, from Jörg Hülsmann, Murray Rothbard, and from Mises himself, interpreted his pre-war ideas in a teleological and anachronistic manner by applying posterior concepts that did not hold before the war. The main conclusion of this thesis is that Mises shifted from a technician to an ideologist as a reaction against the First World War and the excessive centralization of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After suggesting that the psychological roots of this shift should be explored, it is also argued that Mises is, in the end, conceptually mimicking the socialists he criticizes, and that the second wave of the Austrian School starts not in the twenties, but in 1919 with Nation, State, and Economy.Show less

Engelse historici, waaronder Martin Wiener en Clive Emsley, zien in het Victoriaanse tijdperk een afname en groeiende afkeer tegen geweld in het algemeen, en geweld van mannen tegen vrouwen in het bijzonder. In Nederland is, in tegenstelling tot Engeland, nog niet veel systematisch onderzoek gedaan naar geweldscriminaliteit. In dit onderzoek wordt gebruik gemaakt van het Zuid-Hollandse Hof van Assisen in de periode 1811-1838 om antwoord te geven op de vraag hoe deze zaken zich verhouden tot wat bekend is over seksueel en huiselijk geweld in de vroegmoderne tijd en in negentiende-eeuws Engeland. Hierbij wordt een analyse gemaakt van de misdaden, beschuldigden, slachtoffers en strafmaten van seksueel en huiselijk geweld in de eerste helft van de negentiende eeuw. Ik concludeer dat de periode 1811-1838 het karakter van een overgangsperiode heeft, en wijs op zowel verandering als continuïteit in de aanpak van seksueel en huiselijk geweld in deze periode.Show less

Met dit werkstuk doe...Show moreHet Mandarijn is een taal waarin woordparen voorkomen. Dit houdt in dat een woord een langere en een kortere vorm kan hebben die beiden dezelfde semantische betekenis dragen. Met dit werkstuk doe ik onderzoek naar het verschil tussen de lange en korte variant van zogeheten woordparen van zelfstandige naamwoorden. Hierbij kijk ik naar hun distributie en ik probeer een mogelijke verklaring te geven voor het feit dat het Chinees woordparen kent. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat de kortere vorm van een woordpaar gebruikt wordt in gebonden samenstellingen om een specifieke betekenis aan te duiden. De langere variant wordt gebruikt om een algemene betekenis aan te duiden. Waarom het Chinees woordparen heeft, heeft te maken met de metrische fonologische vereisten die nodig zijn voor beklemtoning. Volgens deze vereisten kan in bepaalde contexten alleen de kortere vorm van een woord gebruikt worden, in andere contexten is men genoodzaakt om de langere variant te gebruiken. Hierdoor zijn woordparen onmisbaar geworden in het hedendaags Chinees.Show less

By using a certain colour spectrum often associated with the female gender and combining this with products often aimed at women, the designs of Scholten & Baijings lean towards a feminine stereotype. Yet, the application of colours to products may shift to a masculine connotation in terms of the actual products. The main thesis is: is the work of Scholten & Baijings as a whole, and especially is the project Mini Colour One, influenced by pre-conceived gender roles? Show less

One of the ways that an A yō na B construction can be used, is to lend a sense of indirectness to an expression. In this thesis, I will investigate whether this sense of indirectness can be traced back in English translation, and what this can say about the features of the two languages. First, in order to grasp the diversity of usages of the A yō na B construction, I will provide an analysis of the several meanings, making use of a classification using the framework introduced in Takahashi (2009). Then, I will analyse within these categories how the construction can be translated. In order to do this, I will use a parallel corpus created from examples taken from a Japanese novel and its English translation. Finally, I will discuss my findings in the view of indirectness within language.Show less
